Objects of Play: Hoo Mojong Centennial Retrospective at Asia Society

HOO Mojong (1924-2012), a trailblazer in modern art, stands as a key figure in bridging Eastern and Western artistic languages. As one of the most prominent Chinese female artists following Pan Yu-Lin, she has become a significant representative of Asian modernism in the 20th century.

This Retrospective exhibition takes place during a significant moment: the centenary of Hoo Mojong’s birth. Hoo was born in Shanghai and left her hometown in her early 20s. Her extensive travels and residencies around the world not only enriched her personal experiences but also infused her artistic creations with multicultural inspiration. From Shanghai to Taipei, then to Brazil and Spain, and finally settling in Paris where she created art for 37 years as a painter and printmaker. She returned to China in 1996, museums and institutions throughout China have since celebrated her distinct explorations of bodies and mundane, yet playful, objects. “Objects of Play ” will comprehensively trace her artistic creation features nearly 100 artworks including paintings, prints, drawings, and archival materials from various periods of Hoo’s career, recapping her integration of Chinese and Western art styles and investigations of the spirituality and power of ordinary life.

Wifredo Lam: Homecoming at Asia Society Hong Kong Center

Asia Society Hong Kong Center proudly presents Wifredo Lam: Homecoming, a retrospective of one of the most renowned Cuban modern artists.

Born in Cuba in 1902, Wifredo Lam represents both the synergy and conflict born out of the merging of multiple cultural traditions: his mother was of Afro-Spanish heritage and his father, of Cantonese roots. Homecoming marks Wifredo Lam’s first major solo retrospective in Hong Kong and also the pivotal return of Lam to Asia - tracing his Chinese father’s lineage and studying the significance of the Chinese diaspora. An all-inclusive exhibition including prints, personal memorabilia and paintings – many from the Lam family's private collection – Homecoming covers a range of Wifredo Lam’s key artistic periods: from his time in Havana and Spain in the 1920s to 1938, Paris from 1938 to 1940, Marseille in the early 1940s, and Cuba, France, and Italy in the 1950s and 60s. This exhibition is guest curated by Eskil Lam of the Artist Estate, with Hain Yoon as assistant curator and support from Stephane Lam of Le Pavillon Rouge des Arts and the Artist Estate.

Vanishing Hong Kong
Exploring Abandoned Heritage Buildings

In more ways than one, Hong Kong as we know it is vanishing.

From grand Hakka mansion, century-old European villa to the iconic Shaw Studios – the heart of Hollywood of the Far East - gorgeous heritage buildings in Hong Kong are being bulldozed and redeveloped into more shopping malls and high-rise luxury apartments as we speak.

Urban explorers are racing against the clock to document and preserve the collective memory of the city’s vanishing heritage before these historic buildings are lost forever.

This exhibition is intended to raise awareness of the the vanishing Hong Kong heritage and the urban explorers' role in documenting and preserving them.

Xie Jing-lan (1921-1995), nicknamed Lalan, was an inspirational figure whose legacy lies in the art form known as integrated art, incorporating painting, music, and dance. Having received professional vocal training, Lalan studied composition and modern dance, and began her artistic career painting abstract art after relocating to Paris. Without making any sketches, Lalan choreographed the paintings with her instinct and voluntary gestures. The abstract presentation documented the transition of Lalan’s inner psychology and reflected the harmonious state she had been yearning for.

Showcasing over thirty masterpieces and archival materials of her cross-disciplinary attempts, Extended Figure: The Art and Inspiration of Lalan traces the artist’s transformative moments, and experimentation and introspection through the bodily focused art-making practice. As the fourth instalment in the 20th Century Chinese Female Artist Series, Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) hopes to commemorate the artist’s centennial, while celebrating her significance as a pioneer of cross-disciplinary art, and her impact on merging the aesthetic of East and West.

An Unexpected Masterpiece: Luo Ping’s Ghost Amusement scroll

Art and its Histories: Scholars in Lecture by the Department of Art History, The University of Hong Kong

This lecture introduces one of the most unusual iconic works in Chinese art history. It is a painting that by all counts should not be a “masterpiece.” It is a painting of ghosts (rather than a landscape), it is a handscroll of smaller paintings in uneven sizes mounted together (therefore somewhat ad hoc), and it was made by an artist seeking patrons after years of being under his charismatic teacher’s shadow. It also collected over 160 admiring colophons. So why did this painting garner such attention? Why is Luo Ping’s Ghost Amusement Scroll important? This lecture given by HKU’s Dr. Yeewan Koon in conversation with Orientations Magazine publisher Yifawn Lee looks at how Chinese paintings are mediators of intimate relationships, whether between painters and their audiences or between masters and disciples, and why the strange world of ghosts captured the imagination of an eighteenth-century Chinese art world.

Live: Rome and her Legacy: Classical Art in the 21st Century

What is unique about Roman wall paintings? Hear it from Prof. Susanna McFadden from The University of Hong Kong - HKU - 香港大學!

According to legend, on this date, April 21st, 753 BCE, the semi-divine twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, founded the settlement that was to become the majestic city of Rome. This event spawned a mighty empire and nurtured a visual culture that left a lasting imprint on the subsequent civilizations and (art) histories of the western hemisphere. What better way to acknowledge such a birthday than to investigate and interrogate its continued legacy? Today, some 2,772 years later, remnants of Roman art and architecture are still being discovered meters below the modern cities of Europe, Africa and the Near East, as well as in the deserts and forests of over 40 countries whose modern borders now fall within the territory once controlled from Rome. With a particular focus on wall paintings, this talk details some of these recent discoveries so as to introduce revitalised assessments of “Classical” art for the new millennium.

Silver Moon or Golden Star: A Conversation about Utopia at Asia Society

Silver Moon or Golden Star: A Conversation about Utopia at Asia Society

Loosely taking the idealism displayed at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago as a point of departure, multimedia artist Samson Young discusses his upcoming exhibition at the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. The exhibition, Silver Moon or Golden Star: Which will you buy of me? asks how people adapt to societal changes that they have little control over. For Young, “progress” as it was defined in the 1933 fair’s subtitle “A Century of Progress” represents a specific variant of aspirational and utopian thinking. This discussion focuses on how utopian views continue to be projected on and taken up by society. Young and exhibition curator, Orianna Cacchione will be joined with art writer and curator, Yang Yeung.
