Lewis Lee: The Tale of Beas River at 10 Chancery Lane

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present Hong Kong artist Lewis Lee in a solo exhibition titled “The Tale of Beas River” at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery. The exhibition consists of a new series of paintings and an installation of relics to commemorate the historical legacy of the Hong Kong-China borderland that runs along the Beas River.

Lewis Lee is an artist who is tied to the geographical stories of land and its connected meanings. He grew up in Hong Kong’s Sheung Shui area near the Hong Kong–Mainland China border. He grew up watching the buildings of the now megapolis of Shenzhen emerge out of the landscape viewed from the rural borderlands on the Hong Kong side. Like many Hong Kongers, he is the son of a mainland Chinese immigrant. His father arrived in 1980 crossing through the barbed wire at Ta Kwu Ling, the starting point of his life thereafter. Lee likes to roam the hinterlands of Hong Kong’s border area reimagining the landscapes as a part of Hong Kong history and how the idea of being a “Hong Konger” emerged after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China when the British colonial government established a border prohibited area in 1951, creating a barrier similar to the Berlin Wall. Formally isolating the people of both regions with a serpentine river serves as a natural barrier, separating opposing ideologies in the air. The concept of "Hong Konger" began to take shape from that moment.

Laurent Martin Lo: In the Balance at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present French artist, Laurent Martin Lo's exhibition, In the Balance, with his series of lyrical mobile sculptures made in bamboo.

Through years of studying bamboo, Lo has come to understand its multitude of possibilities. His creativity is born out of skill and understanding of the material. His artistic palette is within the physical and sensorial virtues of bamboo – its sophisticated organic structure, energy, and spirituality. Establishing an intimate dialogue with bamboo, Lo experiments with its flexibility, resistance, density, lightness, mathematics, and poetry, a language that allows him to combine both tension and compression, creating sculptures based on movement and balance. Compositions that take over the space and establish a dialogue, where the space around the piece also becomes another defining element of the piece itself.

With his subtle, yet strong gestures, tensions, and counterweights, the artist speaks of a fragile harmony that is achieved using opposites: flexibility and strength, fullness and void, light and shadow, movement and quietness, Lo invites the spectators to begin a personal dialogue with themselves looking for calm, serenity, and the balance in nature.

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of Franco-Chinese master sculptor Wang Keping during Art Basel Hong Kong. The exhibition runs from March 21—May 11, to also coincide with The French May and the 60-year celebration of France and China’s cultural collaboration. The exhibition will feature a selection of his most significant works and celebrate his more than 45 years of sculpture making.

Sculptor Wang Keping finds the essence or vitality of his creations residing within the very wood he works with. After prolonged observation of its knots and branches, he is inspired to uncover what lies within. His journey as a wood sculptor began four decades ago, when he was a spirited young individual in China, fighting alongside his comrades for the freedom to express contemporary art. Today, he stands as a master, a wise sage, and a philosopher, finding everything he needs within the confines of his garden.

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present the inaugural exhibition in Hong Kong of artist “fuchsia.” Entitled, “Otherworlds” artist fuchsia will exhibit a series of paintings on canvas and on paper and will paint murals on the walls of the gallery. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, where she grew up from the ages of 2 to 12.

fuchsia is a mixed-media artist currently in residency at Sarabande (the Alexander McQueen Foundation) in London. Working primarily with watercolour and oils, she explores concepts of good and evil through carefully selected colour palettes and spiritual iconography. fuchsia paints angels and underwater creatures in dream-like landscapes and fervently believes in the power of these celestial beings. In her eyes, angels represent the deepest state of our core as humans - love, vulnerability and innocence - all things we regrettably gradually let go of when entering adulthood. her paintings are overflowing with symbols of beauty and chaos, and aim to highlight certain conflicting moral forces we face in today’s complex world, namely issues on climate change which seem to preoccupy the minds of her angels.

HKFOREWORD 2023 at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present the twelfth edition of HKFOREWORD 2023, which introduces new art from Hong Kong through its latest art graduates. This year we have selected 10 artists from 3 Hong Kong universities. The exhibition includes painting, video, installation, and a stop motion animation video. The HKFOREWORD exhibition brings a fresh outlook on Hong Kong’s art development and offers insight into the preoccupations and inspirations driving their work.

The year of 2023 has been the official end of the Covid restrictions in Hong Kong that liberated this group of artists during their last year as students to get them back into the physical classroom. However, it came late, thus, they have had a challenging time during their studies. Currently in the post pandemic art world, there does seem to be more colour, frivolity and spontaneity in the works. Many of the artists of this generation have felt the changing political environment, with friends having been arrested for their views and a definite feeling of uncertainty moving forward. We did see some works among the graduates that were overtly political but less than the previous two years. There are some cryptic messages well hidden within some of the works. Overall, this year felt as if they were breaking free from the heaviness of the past 3 years of the Covid pandemic and the protests that preceded it.

A glimpse into the souls of our youth is a gift for all to cherish. HKFOREWORD23 offers a moment in time to understand through art the thoughts and concerns of Hong Kong artists today. Art is a lasting material for society to embrace as a collective journey. May we take a moment to reflect on their musings and embrace the creative process of our time.

Faces of Gaia at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present FACES OF GAIA, featuring four women artists Zoë Marden, Christine Nguyen, Katrina Leigh Mendoza Raimann and Jessica Zoob.

Coinciding with the UN World Ocean’s Day June 8th, the exhibition brings together four women artists whose works suggest the many faces of Gaia, Earth Goddess of Greek mythology. and ancestral mother of all life. Each of the selected artists have practices linked closely to their experiences of nature and its rhythms, incorporating individual sensibilities to reflect the many faces of Gaia.

The exhibition highlights Gaia as a complex intertwining of phenomena that as both maker and destroyer creates the harmony of life. Further explained in scientific circles, the Gaia hypothesis posits that Earth, and its biological systems, behave as a huge single entity. This entity has closely controlled self-regulatory negative feedback loops that keep the conditions on the planet within boundaries that are favorable to life. ‘The Faces of Gaia’ proposes the transformative nature of the Earth Goddess in all her strength to bring restorative balance to the whole.

The exhibition opens on June 8, UN World Ocean’s Day 2023, adding its voice to calls from around the world to protect the earth. Furthermore 10 Chancery Lane will continue its long term support of Oceanic Global, an NGO committed to protecting the Ocean, by donating a portion of the proceeds from the exhibition.

Pan Jian: Fire Rainbows at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

Pan Jian: Fire Rainbows at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present “Fire Rainbows” a new series of paintings by Pan Jian. The Pandemic changed the way that Pan Jian viewed painting. He started to study the way Japanese ukiyo- e contrasting colour palettes held a work together and then began to adopt colours from nature and reality and turned them into his own reality with his own colours. The colours come from the real world, yet the result is unreal. This new series breaks open his obsession with the forest and we feel that he is driven towards abstraction with new vibrant and vivid palettes that explode into “Fire Rainbows,” which is an actual unique alignment of forces in the atmosphere. Technically called a circumhorizontal arc, fire rainbows are caused by light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds.

SPACIOUS has no time but hopes to show moments of enquiry among the artists, which have set their marks and carried them into expansive timelessness. The materiality of the sculptures carry soul with them and put forward an energy each of their own that can truly be felt.

31 Women Artists – Hong Kong at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present 31 Women Artists – Hong Kong, curated by Caroline Ha Thuc.

31 Women Exhibition was a 1943 exhibition organized by Peggy Guggenheim in her new gallery, Art of this Century, in New York City. One of the first exhibitions dedicated to the works of women, the show was a breakthrough. 31 Women Artists – Hong Kong Exhibition is not intended to be a feminist exhibition: ideally, there would be no need for all-women exhibitions, yet it seems meaningful today to acknowledge the practice of women Hong Kong artists and to show the extraordinary vitality of their works. Mixing different generations of artists working in diverse contexts and engaged in various practices, this 2022 exhibition aims above all at celebrating the right to be truly oneself.

Jessica Zoob: This Moment at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

I have created a body of work called This Moment and it is about the extraordinary pivotal time we find ourselves in.

This collection is about the precarious state of our planet, how passionate I am about it, how desperately I care for it, how fragile I understand it to be and how hopeful I am that with enough support and knowledge and people becoming less ignorant about what they are doing, by making good choices, by being willing to change and embrace the wild, we can actually protect and save our world and make it into the wonderful place it should be.

I hope to encourage people to stop and gaze, to be reminded of the beauty of nature and to be inspired to protect it.

During this special year of the 2020 pandemic, Pan Jian expresses how the temporary lock- down allowed him to confront his weaknesses and transform his process. “While reflecting on my own creation, I realized that my previous night landscape paintings seemed too subjective and willful. Therefore, in my new series, Lightning’s Edge, I focus on using complex acrylic and oil colors as the basis of my expression, while combining various drawing methods to form a ‘visual noise.’ I want to create a dialogue that focuses on the relationship and richness of the material to make an absolute indulging visual effect."

Laurent Martin "Lo": Crossing the Void at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to announce exclusive representation in the Asia-Pacific of bamboo sculptor Laurent Martin “Lo” with a solo exhibition in Hong Kong entitled “Crossing the Void” and as well as at Art Basel Spotlight art fair.

Laurent Martin “Lo” invites us into the world of bamboo. His lyrical mobile sculptures are like paintings in the air and his standing works are a concurrence of forces that create an impossibly delicate equilibrium. The forces of the wind sway the works to and fro and create shadows that dance upon the walls.
In this exhibition the gallery will present twelve new works, 7 mobiles and 5 standing works. The large Bamboo Soul hangs at 380 cm like a single stroke of curved simplicity. Another hanging work Smoke is a 2-meter swirl of wistful waves and curls funneling up into the sky. Crossing the Void, stands as a double elliptical window seesawing back and forth as if casting a fishing line. Gallery director Katie de Tilly states, “Lo’s work embraces the essence of all life as one. We experience his works through feeling rather than thinking. He is a truly committed artist who explores the depths of the natural material of bamboo with a skill that is both intuitive and mastered. Throughout the world craftsman work wonders with bamboo and “Lo” has elevated it to a contemporary art form of the highest distinction. And we feel his passion.”
