Ravel’s The Child And The Enchantments by Opera Box

Ravel’s The Child And The Enchantments by Opera Box

A young, mischievous child,
Toys and household objects in rebellion,
A one-act fantasy.

As their inaugural production, Opera Box is proud to present Ravel’s surreal one-act opera. Expect the unexpected with Opera Box’s post-Christmas take on Ravel’s The Child and the Enchantments, in which a young mind journeys from chaos to understanding.

Clocking in at just one hour, with reduced orchestration, and performed in English by some of Hong Kong’s most exciting voices, Opera Box strips The Child and the Enchantments to its essence, highlighting the tension between innocence and maturity. An opera to celebrate what has passed and to welcome new beginnings. Suitable for both the opera-loving and the opera-curious.

The performance is approximately 1 hour without an interval

Yayoi Deki: Minority Flags at Perrotin Gallery

Yayoi Deki: Minority Flags at Perrotin Gallery

Deki's work is renowned for its exquisitely detailed paintings, vibrant color palette, and distinctive finger-stamping technique, conveying a sense of utter purity and eternal adolescence. In the meticulously painted "Flags" series, her singular focus manifests in a collection of miniature faces, representing an element of transcendence within the pictorial plane.

Her paintings embody a primordial insanity that human nature attempts to conceal. This ambivalence is evident in the blissful drowning within a pool of colors, the innocence that encounters both wisdom and idiocy, and the mystical portrayal found in the intricate details.

Deki officially debuted in the group exhibition "Ground Zero Japan" at Art Tower Mito (1999), followed by notable group exhibitions such as "Roppongi Crossing 2007: Future Beats in Japanese Contemporary Art" at Mori Art Museum (2007), the 7th Venice Biennale of Architecture (2000), and the 7th Lyon Biennial (2003). Her artwork has also been featured on record covers, and as one of the celebrated artists of the first decade of the 2000s, she continues to create her artwork with occasional adventures to wander.

Alisan Fine Arts is pleased to present Xie Xiaoze: The Archaeology of Knowledge, the artist’s debut exhibition with the gallery and his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. As the opening act of Alisan Atelier in 2025, the exhibition presents a thought-provoking selection of oil paintings, ink on paper and resin and porcelain sculptures- primarily drawing from Xie’s acclaimed Chinese Library series and Amber of History series. These works excavate the ancient poetics and contemporary relevance of books and knowledge.

Born in rural Guangdong province in 1966, Xie was profoundly influenced by early memories of his father, a school principal, being forced to collect books for destruction during the Cultural Revolution. After moving to the United States in 1993, where he now serves as a professor of art at Stanford University, Xie developed a deep fascination with books. This led him to explore major museums and libraries worldwide, including return visits to China, investigating repositories of past knowledge. For over three decades, his practice has focused on unravelling the complex relationships between knowledge, history and power through paintings, installations, photographs and videos.

Cézanne and Renoir Looking at the World — Masterpieces from the Musée de l’Orangerie and the Musée d’Orsay

Paul Cézanne (1839 – 1906) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 – 1919) asserted themselves as two of the greatest masters of French painting during the last quarter of the 19th century and the very beginning of the 20th century. As icons of the Impressionist art movement in France, the two artists sought to reinvent the art of their time with their innovative depiction of the rapidly changing modern world. Along their artistic journey, they forged a lasting friendship and became influential figures for the new generations of painters, including Spanish master Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973).

This is the first large-scale exhibition of the two Impressionist masters Cézanne and Renoir in Hong Kong, showcasing 52 masterpieces from the Musée de l’Orangerie and the Musée d’Orsay in France.

Geumhyung Jeong: Spa & Beauty at Kiang Malingue (Aberdeen)

Kiang Malingue is pleased to present “Spa & Beauty”, an exhibition by Geumhyung Jeong. The exhibition that runs from 7th through 14th December coincides with two performances by the artist, featuring humanised objects, props, videos and a number of sundries used in daily routines.

Jeong’s body of work ranges from performance, dance, choreography, theatre, video and installation. Since the beginning of her career, she has been investigating the relationship between the human body, the objects that are immediately associated with it, and its artificial counterparts through productions that combine languages and techniques from the fields of contemporary dance, puppet theatre, self-taught programming, and the visual arts. In the course of the physical interaction between her body and the objects, it becomes ambiguous who controls whom, blurring the line between inanimate and animate, the inauthentic and the genuine.

The two scheduled performances on the 7th and 14th of December are effectively a series of demonstrations, in which the artist, treating her body as a medium par excellence, activates the modern artefacts by using them in particular, even idiosyncratic ways, shedding light on the sprays, bottles, bathtubs, and the pleasure of consuming and touching.

M+ Matters: Cantonese Art and Plural Modernities

Why did Guangdong artists establish some of the most radical news pictorials in China in the early 20th century? How did they adapt the elegant poetics of Chinese painting to represent the realities of modern warfare or to satirise society? How do their innovations continue to shape the way we see?

This public symposium will shed new light on Guangdong's distinctive contributions to Chinese artistic modernism and its place within the current discourses of regional and multiple modernities. Leading experts from universities and museums in Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen will consider such topics as the varieties of realism in 20th-century Guangdong painting; the social circulation of images, especially pictorials, woodblock prints, and cartoons; and the propagation of the Lingnan School in Hong Kong and the Cantonese diaspora. The symposium will be conducted in Cantonese and Mandarin, with simultaneous interpretation available in English.

This conversation invites the participating artists and writers to discuss ideas of archival time, impermanence, ghosts, and artistic speculation. They speak about their own artworks as well as personal and shared references, including films and poems.

This event marks the opening of Countering Time, an exhibition featuring new works by Lee Weng Choy, Simon Leung, Gala Porras-Kim, and Merve Ünsal. Ünsal uses her body to record a centuries-old sinkhole where human and geological time collapse. Leung bends and folds the afterlives of a moment captured in a 1967 photograph from Hong Kong. Porras-Kim traces recollections of lost works and archives. Lee uses personal annotations to mark time. Together, they tune in, refract, exhume, and annotate artworks, archival records, and past events, demonstrating how archives are sites of imagination instead of final resting places of historical records.

M+ The Art of Fashion: In Conversation with Guo Pei, Ikko Yokoyama, and Desiree Au

As one of China’s first generation of fashion designers, Guo Pei has expressed her dream for beauty through her endeavour in couture art over the last three decades. She melds historic Chinese craftsmanship with diverse cultural inspirations and haute couture. Her garments are not merely wearable sculptures but mirrors that reflect the rapid economic development in China, the pursuit for material pleasure and technical heights, and the universal hunger for spectacle. The Special Exhibition Guo Pei: Fashioning Imaginationpairs Guo’s pioneering vision with artworks in the M+ Collection that also speak to the same cosmopolitan modernist approaches and references in visual art and culture during the post-1980 period.

Join Guo Pei, M+ Lead Curator of Design and Architecture Ikko Yokoyama, and Vogue Hong Kong founding publisher Desiree Au for a discussion on the relationship between fashion, art, and design, and how through the development of the exhibition this relationship is explored.

Curator Talk | Home: From Collective Construct to Illusional Fabrication

Hosted by curator Shirky Chan, this thought-provoking discussion features participating artists Henry D’Ath and Mo Lai Sze Liz, who will explore the intricate relationships between art, home, and identity. We look forward to seeing you there for this enriching exploration of home through the lens of creativity!

Art as a medium of internalization and reinterpretation, the talk would like to explore more on how the artists express the notions of home which are influenced by societal norms, personal histories, and political agendas. It also examines how artists have responded to experiences of displacement and migration of home through their work. The sharing aims to deepen our understanding of how home is constructed, experienced, and reimagined through creative expression.

Wai Pong Yu Open Studio

Artist Wai Pong Yu will continue the ongoing chatting-drawing project on the 12-meter scroll. He started this drawing in a tiny studio in 2019 when he needed quiet reflection and hoped to see a mindscape projection of collective consciousness. Thanks to the exhibition in 2022, “Brushstrokes and Beyond” at Axel Vervoordt Gallery, Hong Kong, the drawing has reached out to the public with a flow of stories. Now, with a Hong Kong green mountain as a landscape background, the drawing continues to reflect the dark corners in visitors’ minds like a tranquil water surface. And thanks to the support of HKADC Artspace, we can enjoy a comfortable southern retreat for healing conversations and heated debates.

‍Come tell Pongyu a story on the Southside Saturday!

Tai Kwun Contemporary’s BOOKED: Hong Kong Art Book Fair is back for its sixth year. Held from 30 August to 1 September 2024, the latest edition hosts the largest number of exhibitors since its inception: over 110 local and international publishers, artists, booksellers and organisations will be featured across all floors of JC Contemporary at Tai Kwun. The three-day event will also feature a robust series of programmes (displays, performances, talks, workshops), together with Code.Xcess in the Artists’ Book Library. The special project explores how artists play with “codes”—using calendars, cartoons, dictionaries, digital programming language, guidebooks, karaoke, and more—to rethink how such structures form and affect our knowledge, understanding, and behaviour.

This year’s BOOKED: promises to be another exciting edition, and features a range of new and returning exhibitors from Hong Kong and abroad, including Printed Matter (New York), The Book Society / mediabus (Seoul), ZINECOOP (Hong Kong), Lubok Verlag (Germany), Center for Art Research and Alliances (New York), Hauser & Wirth Publications (Hong Kong, Zurich), Zen Foto Gallery (Tokyo), one half in (Zhejiang), In Plain Words (Singapore), and more. Various exhibitors in this year’s art book fair present publications that explore the idea of regeneration, be it rediscovering tradition, revitalising talent, or reinventing convention. From new publications to their articulation through timely projects and thought-provoking public programmes, this edition of the fair will offer various cultural and artistic perspectives to reimagine the familiar.

Artist Sharing: In Search of the Chinese Art of Scent

The Chinese culture of fragrance has a long and rich heritage. Witnessing the passage of time, fragrances are a portal to history that evokes memories marked by scents.

For the exhibition “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Fragrance of Time — In Search of the Chinese Art of Scent”, the Hong Kong Museum of Art has invited local artists Max Cheng, Cherie Cheuk and So Wing Po to create new installation artworks that make use of various fragrance materials, traditional 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘣𝘪 painting and electronic devices, oscillating between poetic imagination and dispassionate rationality to offer fresh interpretations of Chinese fragrance culture.
