The Future Is The Past Of The Present at Mist Gallery

The Future Is The Past Of The Present at Mist Gallery

Time is a relative concept, not confined to a linear trajectory, but one that encompasses loops and divergences. Video art, emerging in the 1960s and persisting to this day, thrives on the constant innovation of recording and projection equipment, challenging the possibilities of representing objective reality in various forms. “Events” become malleable materials that can be directly appropriated, and the intervals between events can be either disregarded or accentuated through splicing. Reality itself, aided by the artist’s subjective vision, can grow into a new form of reality. The past can endure in the future, and the future can be glimpsed in the present. The emergence of audiovisual media, akin to a fable-teller, echoes the scientific discourse on time.

Mimmo Paladino: at MASSIMODECARLO

MASSIMODECARLO is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by the Italian Maestro Mimmo Paladino. This momentous occasion marks Paladino’s return to Asia after his inaugural exhibition at Beijing’s National Gallery of Fine Arts in 1994. Exactly three decades later, Paladino presents a selection of his most recent works at our Hong Kong gallery.

Paladino, a multifaceted artist fascinated by the ancient and the ancestral, finds his muse in what defines Italian culture. Its influence shaped his artistic practice: "I come from an inland culture, a solid culture. Coastal backgrounds are more winding and redundant, full of opposite and different influences. The countryside is rife with legends, cults of the dead, witches and fairies, a sense of the pagan mystery, both religious and spiritual typical of the south."

Ultimately, Paladino blends tradition and personal recollections, past and present times. His creations hover delicately between abstraction and figuration, drawing inspiration from archaic rituals and alchemical practices, coaxing them to unveil the essence of contemporary existence.

David Leung: see food NOT see food at Gallery by the Harbour

Coffee bubbles having a smiley face? Electrical socket looking astonished? Tree rings appearing like a puppy? All these are examples of the psychological phenomenon known as “Pareidolia”, where the human mind tends to seek familiar patterns and thus often associates random images with faces or animals. Renowned local photography artist David Leung has taken Pareidolia as the theme of his artistic journey and created symmetrical visuals out of his food and landscape photographs, unveiling the hidden surreal faces in the scene.

David’s solo exhibition, titled “見餐不是餐: see food NOT see food”, has drawn inspiration from the ancient Zen saying, “See mountains as mountains; See mountains as no mountains; See mountains remain being mountains (見山是山, 見山不是山, 見山仍是山)”, which illustrates the 3 stages of perceiving reality: First, people see things as they are. Second, people interpret the meanings behind the things they see. Delving into the second stage, David sees and uncovers the lively faces in the most ordinary food with his one-of-a-kind perspective. In this exhibition, apart from his iconic series “BEASTS FROM FEASTS”, David has collaborated with various parties for the first time and created 4 brand-new collections, all presented in unique ways that resonate with the themes of the images.

Laurent Martin Lo: In the Balance at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present French artist, Laurent Martin Lo's exhibition, In the Balance, with his series of lyrical mobile sculptures made in bamboo.

Through years of studying bamboo, Lo has come to understand its multitude of possibilities. His creativity is born out of skill and understanding of the material. His artistic palette is within the physical and sensorial virtues of bamboo – its sophisticated organic structure, energy, and spirituality. Establishing an intimate dialogue with bamboo, Lo experiments with its flexibility, resistance, density, lightness, mathematics, and poetry, a language that allows him to combine both tension and compression, creating sculptures based on movement and balance. Compositions that take over the space and establish a dialogue, where the space around the piece also becomes another defining element of the piece itself.

With his subtle, yet strong gestures, tensions, and counterweights, the artist speaks of a fragile harmony that is achieved using opposites: flexibility and strength, fullness and void, light and shadow, movement and quietness, Lo invites the spectators to begin a personal dialogue with themselves looking for calm, serenity, and the balance in nature.

Janine Antoni: In my holding at Rossi & Rossi

Rossi & Rossi is pleased to present In my holding, the first solo exhibition in Asia of Bahamian artist Janine Antoni (b. 1964). Known for her groundbreaking performance works, she uses her body as a conduit, a tool and an anchor for meaning. Antoni’s early methods involved transforming unique materials such as chocolate and soap through habitual, everyday processes like bathing, eating and sleeping to create sculptural works that called attention to the meaning of the making. By way of her body of work, Antoni carefully articulates her relationship to the world, giving rise to emotional states that are felt in and through the senses. In each piece, no matter the medium or image, a conveyed physicality is meant to speak directly to the viewer’s body. The work on view continues to investigate the expressive capacity of the body as well as what it means to live from an embodied place.

Luis Chan: Hong Kong Magic at Hanart TZ Gallery

In 1957 when Luis Chan ventured off to explore the pictorial worlds that existed outside the Hong Kong sceneries he was famous for, he definitely did not know how far he had to go before finding shore.

But Luis Chan was well prepared. From his first formal training course in 1927, and his First Prize award from the Hong Kong Art Club in 1934, by 1957 Luis Chan had already presented 14 solo exhibitions and published over a hundred articles on art. The hundreds of Hong Kong sceneries he had painted by then is evidence of how enamoured he was by the views of Hong Kong and the city life enveloping him. This enamoured engagement presents a sense of reality and belonging not often found in pictorial representations, and it anchored the artist’s experimentations till his last.

Professor Jack Lee, eminent historian of Hong Kong art, has recently published a concise anthology of his essays and research on Luis Chan. His anthology will be presented at the exhibition, and Prof Lee will give a talk about his research on 25 May 2024.

Elizabeth Briel: Impressions: What Lies Beneath Paris and Hong Kong at JCCAC

This exhibition of impressions from two great world cities examines what is often overlooked in busy lives: what lies beneath our feet. Artist Elizabeth Briel has impressed the characteristic hexagonal and octagonal tiles of Hong Kong and Paris into copper and paper to create urban prints directly from the city itself. This act is an interaction with architecture that will soon be destroyed and remade as part of urban renewal. Accompanying the prints are videos of the two cities' architecture and their interplay with raw materials, a meditation on what we often neglect as foundations of our lives today.

Tomoko Nagai: House at Perrotin Gallery

In Tomoko Nagai’s artworks, various animals, children, colorful trees and mushrooms are depicted in a theatrical arrangement against the backdrop of forests and domestic rooms. Loaded with a multitude of motifs, each of Nagai’s paintings embraces a unique sense of spatiality, wherein a dynamism that encapsulates the worlds of fictional narratives intricately overlaps with layers of images. The colorful matière and brushstrokes form a fantastical rhythm as the artist exercises an expression akin to composing a musical piece. The viewer perceives this melody while standing face-to-face with each painting. This evokes a sense of being inside the painting, as the viewer’s own memories and experiences – nostalgic sensations, recollections and dreams from childhood – connect with the worldview represented in each artwork.

Inside the White Cube: Lee Jin Woo

White Cube is pleased to present ‘Inside the White Cube: Lee Jin Woo’. Born in Korea in 1959, this Paris-based artist creates work in which the method of its making is integral to its comprehension. The process commences with the burning of wood to create charcoal and ash, which is then overlaid with hanji – a handmade Korean paper from mulberry tree bark. The surface is then pounded and scraped repeatedly with wire brushes to create abstract compositions of undulating light and shadow.

Referencing the legacy of Korean Dansaekhwa painting, Lee’s paintings share with the movement the emphasis on materiality and ‘repeatability’, whilst also defining a new visual language. His deep respect for traditional Korean materials, as well as the space this opens up for a new wave of Korean art, unites him with the leading father Dansaekhwa painting, Park Seo-Bo.

Antoinette Rozan: Vital at Sin Sin Fine Art

Freedom, movement, paradox, and energy are the words that best describe Antoinette Rozan and her work. Self-taught multidisciplinary artist for twenty years, creation is for her a vital expression, which she explores in two and three-dimensional formats. Paradox is the source of her strength. She sculpts in volume, yet sees with only one eye. She expresses that life is a perpetual energy in motion, yet her spine has been sealed since childhood. Her work embodies the joy of living overcoming obstacles and hardship. Anything is possible. When we are grounded in ourselves, we can fly. After all, our life force is linked to the heart – the vital source of all possibility. The great success of her first exhibition in France in 2005, along with Sin Sin Fine Art’s trust in Hong Kong, convinced her to devote herself to her art. Over the past fifteen years, her works have been shown in museums (Hong Kong Museum of Medicine and Sciences), fairs (Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong), and public places (Cité Radieuse du Corbusier, Clinique Saint Martin in Marseille, Chateau de la Gaude in Aix en Provence, Pacific Place, and Tai Koo Place in Hong Kong). She continues to carry out numerous public and private commissions in France and China.

Henry Steiner: The Art of Graphic Communication at M+

Presented as part of a new series of focused monographic exhibitions on historically important figures and moments, Henry Steiner: The Art of Graphic Communication features the work of the father of graphic design in Hong Kong. The exhibition celebrates Henry Steiner's (b. 1934) influential graphic language with a selection of some of his most iconic projects tracing the city’s development from the 1960s onwards.

Born in Austria in 1934, Henry Steiner immigrated to the United States where he trained at Yale University under the renowned American graphic designer Paul Rand, learning the art of storytelling through images. After moving to Hong Kong in 1961, he found the city vibrant with a complex culture, a place on the cusp of transformation into an international centre for manufacturing, trade, finance, leisure, and tourism. Organised into two sections, this exhibition will first trace Steiner’s early years and influences that underpin his distinctive style. It will then take visitors through Steiner’s definitive designs, from large infrastructural and industry projects that marked the development of the city to those reflecting Hong Kong’s growth as a destination for travel and leisure. By showing Steiner’s practice through Hong Kong’s flourishing decades, the exhibition elaborates the significance of graphic design in Hong Kong’s distinctive visual culture.

I. M. Pei: Life is Architecture at M+

The first major retrospective of Ieoh Ming Pei (1917–2019), I. M. Pei: Life is Architecture properly appraises for the first time the work of one of the greatest architects of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Pei’s high-profile projects were realised over seven decades with an exceptionally wide geographic reach, including the National Gallery of Art East Building in Washington, D.C., modernisation of the Grand Louvre in Paris, Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, and Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. These iconic landmarks solidified Pei’s position in architectural history and popular culture. His life and work weave together a tapestry of power dynamics, geopolitical complexities, cultural traditions, and the character of cities around the world, and his transcultural vision laid a foundation for the contemporary world.

The exhibition takes an expanded and closer look at Pei’s practice through six themes representing areas of focus and approaches throughout his career: ‘Transcultural Foundations’, ‘Real Estate and Urban Redevelopment’, ‘Art and Civic Form’, ‘Material and Structural Innovation’, ‘Power, Politics, and Patronage’, and ‘Regenerating Cultural and Historical Archetypes’. The themes place Pei’s practice in close dialogue with social, cultural, and biographical trajectories that show architecture and life to be inseparable.  The exhibition features a rich selection of drawings, sketches, videos, models, photographs, and other archival documentation, many of which will be on view for the first time.

M+ will present Sonic Blossom, a celebrated performative installation by LEE Mingwei (b. 1964), in the Focus Gallery. Sonic Blossom is a live performance which features trained opera singers approaching a visitor in the museum galleries to offer the gift of song. It is inspired by the artist's experience of caring for his mother during her recovery from surgery, when they both took solace in listening to Franz Schubert's Lieder. With five chosen Lieder and a group of Hong Kong-based classical singers, Sonic Blossom transforms these songs into an extraordinary offering that elicits spontaneous moments of joy, sadness, and connection. Taiwan-born LEE Mingwei is an internationally recognised artist with a pioneering practice that foregrounds experience and artistic participation. Educated in Taiwan and the United States, LEE is part of a generation of artists who began to incorporate participatory elements into their art in the 1990s. A.A.Murakami (est. 2011) is a Tokyo- and London-based artist duo formed by Alexander Groves (b. 1983) and Azusa Murakami (b. 1984). Their multidisciplinary practice straddles the spheres of sculpture, installation, cinema, and digital art, creating experiences that augment their science-based inquiries with moments of daring and spectacle.

The exhibition will feature two interlinked immersive installations which offer an otherworldly experience: one traces the journeys of physical fog rings travelling into the digital realm, and the other reveals an environment of floating bubble clouds. With transient materials and the innovative application of custom-built technology, these two large-scale installations inspire visitors to question philosophical ideas about the nature of reality, artifice, and the digital lives that we increasingly embody within today's contemporary landscape. The presentation at M+ further develops the duo’s pioneering concept of ‘Ephemeral Tech’, in which innovative technological research is used to reimagine primordial origins and to speculate possible future scenarios.

Guo Pei (b. 1967), China’s first couture artist, combines Chinese cultural heritage with international elements and artistic expression. Guo's astonishing runway collections have impressed fashion and art audiences alike for almost 30 years. Presenting the first major exhibition of Guo’s work produced in China, M+ will showcase Guo’s key collections and early designs, highlighting her unique career connecting China and the rest of the world and the cultural symbols created through her sophisticated and visually dazzling practice. Working with the couturier and her studio, the exhibition presents a selection of garments shown to audiences in the region for the first time, creating a layered dialogue with the M+ Collections around visual imagination and workmanship. The exhibition foregrounds Guo Pei's unique artistic style that resonates with imperial Chinese dress etiquette, European royal fashion, architecture, and the botanical world.

Making it Matters at M+

Making it Matters is an exhibition exploring different approaches to the topic of making as a process of creative expression and the long-lasting impact this process has on our individual lives, global communities, and ecosystem. The experimental display will feature ideas that innovative makers have adopted to incorporate responsible design, material innovation, and creative reuse strategies into alternative modes of thinking and how these ideas are situated within wider historical, pragmatic, or sociopolitical contexts. The exhibition draws upon the diverse work of artists, designers, and architects currently in the M+ Collections—including John Cage, Raffaella della Olga, Anna Ridler, Julie & Jesse, Fujimori Terunobu, Vo Trong Nghia Architects, and Rural Urban Framework—to highlight the diverse stories that show us why the act of making continues to matter in society, now more than ever.

Kongkee: Delusion Beat at Tai Kwun

The interweaving of murmuring voices, strings, beats, and rhythms seamlessly merges into the audience's ethereal memories, akin to a dream. This medley injects a variety of musical elements into Kongkee’s science-fiction extravaganza.

"Delusion Beat" is inspired by Kongkee's comic Dragon’s Delusion, where Qu Yuan transforms into an electronic guitarist. In a world filled with endless desires, he uses music to enlighten souls who have been eroded by these desires. Kongkee also envisions Qu Yuan's soul reincarnating 2,000 years later, awakening in a cyberpunk rock world.

For this extraordinary musical event, Tai Kwun Contemporary will invite Veegay, the music director of Dragon’s Delusion — Preface, along with pianist and violinist K Tsang, vocalist Wynne Lo, and DJ Shelf-Index, who will be performing live music together. Join us for this evening of music and animated wonder!

Quotas are limited, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tai Kwun Conversations: Prison Series – Healing Walls: The Restorative Power of Art

The “Healing Walls” (2004) project led by Mural Arts Philadelphia cherishes the artistic partnership among men in prison, victims of crime, and victim advocates, and helps break down barriers between them. Originally conceived as a single, collaborative work, the plan fell apart when the two groups could not be united in their views. Instead, two murals—Prisoner’s Journey and Victim’s Journey by Cesar Viveros and Parris Stancell—were created adjacent to each other. During the creative process, the project took on a life of its own and it started bridging very profound gaps between people.

This session of Tai Kwun Conversations addresses the healing and restorative power of art and highlights its capacity to facilitate dialogue on difficult issues—such as, punishment, remorse, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It begins with a film screening of Concrete, Steel and Paint (55 mins), followed by conversations with the speakers.

The conversations will be conducted in English, with English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. Book now.

Speakers:

Jane Golden | Executive Director of Mural Arts Philadelphia

Tony Heriza | Director of the film Concrete, Steel and Paint

Julie & Jesse: Meet the Artist and Guided Tour at Novalis Art Design

Julie & Jesse will be present for a guided tour of the exhibition ‘For What It’s Worth: Ceramic Experimentations by Julie & Jesse.‘ Rust, used cardboard wrapper, ceramic shards, roadside saplings — these are all things that we come in contact with on a regular basis, yet are so ordinary that we don’t usually register having seen them by the end of the day, and may even want to remove them to tidy up a place. But for Julie & Jesse, what are considered useless and unwanted to most are treasures to them. Each find becomes an opportunity to unpack stories across time and space, hidden within the material. The duo’s eye for curiosity and investigative approach have not only driven their entire creative practice — it is how they make sense of the world. The new works presented in this exhibition are both documentation and fruition of their ceramic experimentations in the past decade. What they create is a testimony to their superb technical skills, but it is always poetic and personal.
