Nalini Malani: In Search of Vanished Blood at the M+ Facade

In Search of Vanished Blood (2012/22) is a commission for the M+ Facade by moving image artist Nalini Malani.

Comprising live-action performance, animation, drawing, painting, and found footage, this silent eight-and-a-half-minute video is tailored for display on the M+ Facade in a bold visual dialogue with Hong Kong’s dynamic skyline. Complementing Nalini Malani: Vision in Motion, the inaugural exhibition in the Studio at M+, In Search of Vanished Blood continues Malani’s longstanding artistic investigation into the effects of war, violence, and the repression of women. The enigmatic video mingles coded images from Greek and Hindu mythology with personal and real-world references, layering architectural forms, cloudy skies, world maps, human faces, and a gigantic prostrate female figure that emerge from shadows and darkness.

In Search of Vanished Blood will be displayed daily on the M+ Facade from Friday, 5 August 2022 until Sunday, 2 October 2022, from 19:00 to 21:10. The work will be presented from 19:00 to 21:10 during the weekends only from Saturday, 8 October 2022 to Sunday, 30 October 2022.

Screening 'Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable' at Asia Society

Coinciding with the opening of Damien Hirst’s solo exhibition ‘His Own Worst Enemy’ at White Cube Hong Kong, the artist’s acclaimed film Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable will be screened at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center on 2 December 2021 and 7 January 2022.

This is the first time Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable (2017) has been shown in Asia. The film chronicles the extraordinary backstory behind Hirst’s eponymous exhibitions at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice, 2017, which were over ten years in the making and revolved around the unearthing of the wreck of a large ship, the ‘Unbelievable’ (Apistos in the original Koine Greek). Directed by Sam Hobkinson and produced by Nicolas Kent, the film gets to the bottom of Hirst’s mission, following a team of archaeologists and divers to the trove of cargo where the story began.

Videos in My Closet: Video Art Selections by Videotage at Eaton

In partnership with Eaton HK, “Videos in My Closet: Video Art Selections by Videotage” looks into the Hong Kong LGBTQ+ community through the lens that how artists perform their gender and sexual identities and cultures in front of it. While the LGBTQ+ community is now normalized by the commercial world and consumer market as Pink Economy, the identity politics in Hong Kong has gradually shifted from the focus on social hierarchy to nationalism/localism. The LGBTQ+ community is now apparently walking side by side with the current social movements, but the gender and sexual orientation issues seem to be overlooked in the spotlight for the tension between pro/against the movements. By presenting queer artist videos, “Videos in My Closet: Video Art Selections by Videotage” attempt to explore the alternative expressions of queer identity excluded in the storytelling-based media industry, and also extend the public imaginations toward queers beyond the depictions in mass media.

Venue address: Kino, 1/F, Eaton HK, 380 Nathan Rd, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon

Metropolis Film Panel Discussion and Screening with Live Techno

Metropolis Film Panel Discussion and Screening with Live Techno

"Metropolis" sets the standard for cinematic art in many ways, from its vivid imagination of the future, to its innovative realisation of architecture and bold experimentations in special effects. Its take on architecture was particularly remarkable: the metropolis of the film's title is a terrifying exaggeration of the modern city, with easily-recognizable architectural styles -- Art Deco, Bauhaus, early Modernism -- that were made gloomy and nightmarish. Bizarrely, in the decades after the film was made, real-life cities began to resemble the one in the film, as if "Metropolis" had subconsciously inspired architects to build monstrously-proportioned, inhuman housing projects and office complexes.

18:00 - 19:30 Panel Discussion with Ken Ip, Group Head of Marketing, B.S.C. Group and Gianni Talamini, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering City University of Hong Kong
19:30 Film Screening "Metropolis" (1927) with live sounds improvised by experimental techno artist AKF (Romantic Ecchi HK)
