Wing Po So: Take Turns at Para Site

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Take Turns’ by Hong Kong artist Wing Po So is a newly commissioned exhibition at Para Site that examines the shifting dynamics among nature, the body, and materiality using Chinese medicine drawers as vessels. Growing up in a family-run Chinese medicine shop, So was immersed in the world of materia medica, and this upbringing has deeply influenced her artistic practice. Central to the exhibition are salvaged drawers from now-defunct traditional Chinese pharmacies in Hong Kong, reimagined as sites of transformative healing.

The exhibition presents works across three ‘islands’ within Para Site’s tenth-floor space, anchored by a central wooden structure inspired by generative systems. The immersive installation integrates Chinese herbs, rocks, kinetic sculptures, 3D-printed objects, sonic rhythms and more, creating an ecosystem where the boundaries between the organic and inorganic, animate and inanimate, dissolve. ‘Take Turns’ is curated by Yuanyu Li.

Opening reception: Sat, 15 Mar 2025, 2–7pm

Closing Artist Talk for ‘The Embrace and the Passage’ at Para Site

As the unfolding exhibition draws to a close, the four artists gather to reflect on their worksand discuss how they engage with host-guest dynamics as a framework for healing.Navigating through place-making and live happenings, they tend to personal andcollective traumas. The conversation will also delve into their approaches to dialogical art-making—how exchanges shape their practices and give rise to fluid, evolving relationships. As boundaries shift and roles dissolve, the discussion considers: when boundaries aredisrupted, can the guest gain power, and can the host be liberated? We invite all audiencesalong the way to take part in this reflection and sharing.

Bunny Cadag: PORTALS at Para Site

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

PORTALS is the final commissioned work of ‘The Embrace and the Passage’, concluding the exhibition’s dialogue on shifting host-guest dynamics. This site-specific performanceinvites audiences to traverse both material and symbolic portals within the space through collective rituals.

Leading up to the performance, the artist hosted workshops in Hong Kong where participants crafted figurines that form a shared, transcendent presence along her own embodiment, Vera Maningning, whose name means ‘the light of truth.’ Clad in white lace—a motif resonant in both Filipino households and Western rituals—she inhabits this figure to embody a spectrum of fluid identities. At the performance, through singing, shapeshifting, and healing practices inspired by pre- and postcolonial Filipino shamanism, she casts the foreign, trans body as a sanctuary of queer struggle and survival, overcomingthe imposed borders of geography and power that continue to shape our world.

Participants are encouraged to bring a personally significant object to join the artist during the performance.

Florence Lam: Ocean Birth

As part of ‘The Embrace and the Passage’, Florence Lam embarks on a journey from a contained space to the boundless ocean, reflecting on fertility, abortion, and host-guest dynamics from within.

Departing from her habitat at Para Site, the artist transitions to the coast for Ocean Birth, a continuation of her earlier work Maternal Water (2022). Fluid sustains the foetus within the womb but drowns it once detached; it reincarnates through cycles of contamination and purity; and it carries weight yet evaporates. Navigating between land and ocean, Lammanifests the duality of fluid through her body and various materials, signaling the possibility of transcendence.

How to be Happy Together? at Para Site

How to be Happy Together? at Para Site

Para Site is delighted to present ‘How to be Happy Together?’, curated by Zairong Xiang.Departing loosely from Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together (1997), the exhibition enacts a critique of dualism and the questions raised by the dual and its split—between intimate and antagonistic partners, between political entities, between ‘us’ and ‘them’, and even between ‘I’ and ‘me’, transcending the logic of ‘either/or’ central to racial capitalism and colonial modernity.

The primary setting for Wong Kar Wai’s queer Hong Kong cinema classic is Buenos Aires—the literal opposite side of the world from Hong Kong. Featuring over twenty artists from Hong Kong, its neighbouring localities, and Latin America, the exhibition alludes to Hong’s clichéd status as a para-site ‘between east and west’, and ‘between tradition and modernity’, in order to interrogate encounters both imagined and real between two seemingly distant ends of the world. It engages with a wide range of artistic practices that stay formally within the pas de deux yet promiscuously open up to an unexpected array of couplings and decouplings, spotlighting overlooked historical, social, and cultural connections between Greater China and the world to rethink possibilities of a queer happy-togetherness.

James Richards & Mason Leaver-Yap: Some Contamination

Developed during their August residency at Para Site, artist James Richards and writer Mason Leaver-Yap present a live programme of video, text, and music. This collagistic event draws on the pair’s outputs and influences. Taking inspiration from ideas of togetherness and departure as manifested on a cellular and social level, the long-time collaborators present their material in dialogue with works by other artists and writers. This relay considers and builds a network of resonances, loops, and contaminations.

Para Site’s International Residency Programme aims to cultivate dialogue and connect Hong Kong with thought leaders who are shaping narratives, conversations, and practices in contemporary art both regionally as well as beyond. The residency is envisioned as an open-ended platform that nurtures exchanges between participants and the local and regional art scenes, encouraging studio visits, talks, screenings, performances, and various other collaborative activities.

Art Labor: Cloud Chamber at Para Site

Para Site is pleased to present ‘Cloud Chamber’, the first institutional exhibition to survey the activities of Art Labor, a Ho Chi Minh City-based collective formed by Thao NguyenPhan, Truong Cong Tung and Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran.

The exhibition ‘Cloud Chamber’ presents Art Labor’s long-term historical research, poetic observations, and decade-long practice of relationship-building with the Jrai community in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Alongside Art Labor’s newly commissioned and existing works, the exhibition features artwork from Jrai artists, with whom the collective has created collaborative projects since 2016, archival material from a missionary-turned-anthropologist in the French colonial period, and works by contemporary artists inspired by the region.

By reframing the region beyond its turbulent past, ‘Cloud Chamber’ looks to engage the audience in an imaginative reflection on the region’s complex history and its ongoing impact, from war, and industrialisation, to the lingering effects of missionary activity. The exhibition title ‘Cloud Chamber’ alludes to the duality of matter and antimatter reacting to one another, a concept echoed by reincarnation beliefs in indigenous cosmologies of the Central Highlands. Expanding on this duality like a gravitational field, the exhibition explores the interplay of opposing forces—regeneration and destruction, modernity and tradition, reality and dream—that continues to shape the complex dynamics and ever-changing landscape of the Central Highlands today.

Para Site presents ‘Sounding Lines’ (16 March–28 July 2024; opening reception on 15 March, 6–8pm), a solo exhibition of the acclaimed New York-based artist Aki Sasamoto. Situated between sculpture and performance, the exhibition marks the first major solo presentation of the artist in Hong Kong and features a newly commissioned installation and performance in conversation with a recent moving-image work.

The exhibition title ‘Sounding Lines’ alludes to the method of measuring the depths of bodies of water with a weighted line. Expanding on this concept, the exhibition explores the boundaries and interrelations among people and their physical surroundings, focusing on how these relationships define a sense of intimacy or distance to the world at large.

Para Site presents 'Soft breath' (16 March–26 May 2024; opening reception on 15 March, 6–8pm), a solo exhibition of Trevor Yeung, co-commissioned in partnership with Gasworks, London; and Aranya Art Center, Qinhuangdao. Taking queer experiences that have shaped multi-species entanglements as a starting point, 'Soft breath' evokes the fluid interplay between night and day, public and private life, and hidden and visible desires.

Following the project's journey from the first exhibition titled ‘Soft ground’ at Gasworks to its presentation at Para Site, ‘Soft breath’ will see Yeung recast the project by bringing into conversation the rituals of 'wishing trees' native to the New Territories in Hong Kong. Drawing on the convergence of histories and places where personal and collective desires meet, Yeung creates a stage to explore humanity's entanglements with the natural environment.

Offerings for Escalante at Para Site

Para Site is delighted to present ‘Offerings for Escalante’, the first major institutional solo exhibition of the artist duo Enzo Camacho and Ami Lien in Asia, curated by Celia Ho. The exhibition features all-new commissions including an hour-long experimental documentary film, large-scale drawings on handmade paper, a site-specific installation, and a 16mm stop motion animated film.

The documentary film, a co-commission by Para Site, CCA Berlin, Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art, and MoMA PS1, is the result of extensive primary research conducted by the artists on the issues of food sovereignty and land justice in Negros Occidental, Philippines. The artists have been researching the Escalante Massacre of 1985: though an incident that took place during the martial rule of Ferdinand Marcos (1972–1986), it is nonetheless emblematic of the injustices that marginalised groups, such as sugar plantation workers, have faced since colonial times in the Philippines.

In the suite of mixed media drawings on handmade paper, as well as the 16mm animation, symbols of seeming destruction, such as fire and holes on a leaf, take on undertones of hope and rebirth through the artists’ manipulation of eclectic materials gathered from the flora of Negros. The rotating light installation made from onion skin, on the other hand, seeks to reconnect the ‘white cube’ with the land upon which it’s built, and entices viewers with shifting refractions cast over the exhibition space.

Iterations of the exhibition will travel to CCA Berlin, Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art, and MoMA PS1 after debuting at Para Site.

Curator-guided Tour ‘signals…here and there’ at Para Site

Join us for a curator-guided tour (in English) of ‘signals…here and there’, the third and final chapter of the exhibition series ‘signals…瞬息’ curated by Billy Tang and Celia Ho.

About the exhibition: ‘signals…here and there’ marks the culmination of a journey that has unfolded throughout a six-month period and which featured 25 artists and collectives in dialogue with an experimental display structure. In the context of this final exhibition chapter, ‘here and there’ evokes migratory movements, both historical and contemporary, within the context of Hong Kong’s transformation as a city. Such movements not only refer to the migrations of individuals, but also encompass the continuous changes that evolve with the concept of ‘home’. As such, the exhibition frames a fluid conception of ‘here’ from ‘there’ to negotiate the divide separating various histories as well as geographical distances.

Memory Court: the Soundings of Things at Para Site

A semi-improvised lecture performance with sounds and objects
Created by Linda Chiu-han Lai with Longman Luk and Valerie Mak

Episode 1: Tree of Life in the Memory Garden | Episode 2: The Narrow Passage to truths | Episode 3: Forensics | Episode 4: Insights | Episode 5: Micro Narratives | Episode 6: Sand Adrift, Dust Afloat

‘Memory Court’ is a material space to invoke the limits of interpretation andrepresentational practices. Language becomes sounding. Bodies connect with sounds.Motions evolve in space into eclectic object events. Dialectic structures take overhermeneutic circles.

In six short episodes, ‘Memory Court’ is a performative response to Matteo Ricci’s‘memory palace’, Aby Warburg’s non-verbal art history experiment Mnemosyne Atlas,Gerhard Richter’s anomic archive Atlas, Martha Rosler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen andYvonne Rainer’s Trio A: the Mind is Muscle—all embodied in an assemblage event the artisthas developed with the Floating Projects.

‘Memory Court’ is far from a cosy-intimate personal space. The artist thinks of it as a crimescene re-enacted with objects on trial while a court stenographer tenaciously records themulti-sensorial events with improvised strategies. ‘Memory Court’ could be a lecture performance, but it surely evolves into an object event, tangentially connected with the installations Tree of Life and Bamboo Percussive currently onview at ‘signals…瞬息’.

Para Site presents final chapter of ‘signals…瞬息’: ‘signals…here and there’

‘signals...here and there’, curated by Billy Tang and Celia Ho, marks the culmination of a journey that has unfolded throughout a six-month period and which featured 25 artists and collectives in dialogue with an experimental display structure.

Continuing to pay homage to the expanded concept of kinetic art that emerged from Signals Gallery (1964–1966, London), ‘signals…here and there’ will feature the work of the Greek artist Panayiotis Vassilak (1925–2019) known as Takis, a pioneer of kinetic art who participated in the original Signals Gallery exhibitions. Connecting the historical origins of kinetic art to our time, this chapter of the exhibition looks to build momentum and generate a collective discussion around today’s most challenging questions.

The participating artists of ‘signals…here and there’ are Doreen Chan, Merv Espina, HASS Lab, Kulagu Tu Buvongan, Billy HC Kwok, Linda Chiu-han Lai, Jaffa Lam, Leung Chi Wo, Ghislaine Leung, Berenice Olmedo, Nibha Sikander, Wing Po So, Takis, Tang Kwok Hin, with atmospheric interventions including a publishing project by Wing Chan featuring photography by South Ho.

Para Site is delighted to present ‘Strange Strangers’ as the second exhibition in its newtenth-floor annex. The duo exhibition curated by Cusson Cheng will showcasecommissioned and existing sculptures by New York-based Chinese artist Shuyi Cao andHong Kong artist Leelee Chan.

Taking the concept of ‘strange strangers’, which philosopher and ecologist TimothyMorton defines as ambiguous beings that study and challenge the paradox and fissures ofidentity, the two artists trace the flows and formative processes of matter to envision aqueer ecology where one may relate to a collective of beings in a planetary approach. Cao’sstoneware, glass, and resin works unravel intimacies and kinships across a myriadnetworked life forms, summoning ontologies that wander between substances, residues, and impurities. Meanwhile, Chan’s enigmatic sculptures incorporate and transform urbandetritus, ancient artefacts, as well as natural and industrial material to accentuate the in-becoming nature of materials and to experiment with logic and patterns beyond ananthropocentric worldview. Despite distinct formal presentations and differing approachesto materiality, the artists’ creations, including site-specific spatial interventions, coexist inthe exhibition space as an ecosystem that transcends binaries of organic and inorganic, primordial and advanced.

To inaugurate the new space, Para Site is proud to present a solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist Kong Chun Hei, ‘PS’ (12 May–18 June 2023; opening reception 11 May, 6–8pm), curated by Kobe Ko consisting of a newly commissioned cycle of site-specific works.

‘PS’ refers to the postscript commonly found at the end of written communication, which the artist regards as paratext that not only provides alternative readings, but is able to also open new lines of inquiry in relation to the main text. This attention towards paratext serves to disrupt and provoke new forms of production beyond the status quo. The presentation establishes a tension within the space, and looks to probe at areas of daily life that remain unquestioned to symbolise the connection between Para Site’s newly expanded tenth floor space to the existing space on the 22nd floor.

As the inaugural exhibition of Para Site’s new space, ‘PS’ reflects on the institution’s complex history as an artist-founded alternative space. The exhibition contemplates Para Site’s emergence as a leading contemporary art institution in relation to the struggles of balancing international and local interests amidst a rapidly changing social context.

Opening reception 11 May, 6–8pm

Venue address: 10B, Wing Wah Industrial Building, 677 King’s Road, Quarry Bay

Para Site is delighted to present the group exhibition ‘signals…瞬息’ (18 March–29September 2023) curated by Billy Tang and Celia Ho. The exhibition marks the firstchapter of the new direction for Para Site and will feature a series of commissions andexisting works in dialogue with an experimental display structure that will transformthroughout the exhibition.

‘Signals’ in the context of the exhibition are modes of kinetic art, communication, actions, and interventions to create a chain of reactions. As such, the participating artists will makeuse of cues including sound, smell, movement, and smoke to interrogate complex issuesrelated to dispersed communities, migratory flows, and the intersection of technology, science, and architecture. The exhibition will unfold over three phases: ‘signals…stormsand patterns’ (opening 17 March) will focus on self-organisation and the politics of space incontemporary artmaking; ‘signals…folds and splits’ (opening 2 June) will in turn reflect onthe temporality of artworks and alternative economies of time; and finally, ‘signals…hereand there’ (opening 4 August) will explore dispersal as a strategy to think aboutcontemporary global issues through the lens of Hong Kong.

Fanatic Heart at Para Site

Para Site is delighted to present the group exhibition ‘Fanatic Heart’ from 10 December 2022 to 26 February 2023, opening reception 9 December 2022, 6–8pm. Seemingly an elixir of pop cultural offerings that alleviates us from the hardships of daily life, 'Fanatic Heart' prompts the audience to realise the potent political power behind obsessive, fanatical desires and employ them to make sense of the radical world we live in.
Organised to embrace and expand the definition of fandom culture, the exhibition invites fifteen artists from Hong Kong, Japan, mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam to materialise the relationship between fandom and socio-political happenings that have taken place in Southeast and East Asia. Making eclectic references to celebrity worship, drag, postcolonial and post-socialist identities, social movements, religion, and technological advances, the artists investigate desire and affect to decipher the cultural unconscious of contemporary social landscapes.

The participating artists are: Haneyl Choi, BuBu de la Madeleine, Guhit Kulay (Maria Christina Castillo Anire, Cristina Balao-as Cayat, Jonalyn Macalalad Molina, and Marilyn Santiago Lopez), Ho Tzu Nyen, Yuree Kensaku, Dew Kim, Lu Yang, Green Mok, Yasumasa Morimura, Diane Severin Nguyen, Yoshiko Shimada, and Sin Wai Kin, seven of whom are presenting all-new commissions. The exhibition is curated by Cusson Cheng.
