Antoinette Rozan: Vital at Sin Sin Fine Art

Antoinette Rozan: Vital at Sin Sin Fine Art

Freedom, movement, paradox, and energy are the words that best describe Antoinette Rozan and her work. Self-taught multidisciplinary artist for twenty years, creation is for her a vital expression, which she explores in two and three-dimensional formats. Paradox is the source of her strength. She sculpts in volume, yet sees with only one eye. She expresses that life is a perpetual energy in motion, yet her spine has been sealed since childhood. Her work embodies the joy of living overcoming obstacles and hardship. Anything is possible. When we are grounded in ourselves, we can fly. After all, our life force is linked to the heart – the vital source of all possibility. The great success of her first exhibition in France in 2005, along with Sin Sin Fine Art’s trust in Hong Kong, convinced her to devote herself to her art. Over the past fifteen years, her works have been shown in museums (Hong Kong Museum of Medicine and Sciences), fairs (Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong), and public places (Cité Radieuse du Corbusier, Clinique Saint Martin in Marseille, Chateau de la Gaude in Aix en Provence, Pacific Place, and Tai Koo Place in Hong Kong). She continues to carry out numerous public and private commissions in France and China.

Elizabeth Briel: Impressions: What Lies Beneath Paris and Hong Kong at JCCAC

This exhibition of impressions from two great world cities examines what is often overlooked in busy lives: what lies beneath our feet. Artist Elizabeth Briel has impressed the characteristic hexagonal and octagonal tiles of Hong Kong and Paris into copper and paper to create urban prints directly from the city itself. This act is an interaction with architecture that will soon be destroyed and remade as part of urban renewal. Accompanying the prints are videos of the two cities' architecture and their interplay with raw materials, a meditation on what we often neglect as foundations of our lives today.

Laurent Martin Lo: In the Balance at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present French artist, Laurent Martin Lo's exhibition, In the Balance, with his series of lyrical mobile sculptures made in bamboo.

Through years of studying bamboo, Lo has come to understand its multitude of possibilities. His creativity is born out of skill and understanding of the material. His artistic palette is within the physical and sensorial virtues of bamboo – its sophisticated organic structure, energy, and spirituality. Establishing an intimate dialogue with bamboo, Lo experiments with its flexibility, resistance, density, lightness, mathematics, and poetry, a language that allows him to combine both tension and compression, creating sculptures based on movement and balance. Compositions that take over the space and establish a dialogue, where the space around the piece also becomes another defining element of the piece itself.

With his subtle, yet strong gestures, tensions, and counterweights, the artist speaks of a fragile harmony that is achieved using opposites: flexibility and strength, fullness and void, light and shadow, movement and quietness, Lo invites the spectators to begin a personal dialogue with themselves looking for calm, serenity, and the balance in nature.

Cyril Delettre: I AM at La Galerie

A portrait of a generation.

I am proud to be who I am. I am proud of my look. I AM.

There is a phenomenon in Hong Kong where young tourists come to take photos and act like supermodels.

The vast majority are young women. From cool hip-hop style, to sweet girl-next-door style, people choose to dress up stylishly for the photos.  There are a few places in Hong Kong which are 'must-go photo spots'. People queue up to take pictures.

They respectfully wait until the previous ones have finished taking the photos before taking their place.

They strike poses, and act as professional models.

Here, the model directs the photo shoot. They have a very precise idea of the results they want to have.

The photographer is purely here to press the shutter button.  The model has full control of the images.

After a few poses, the model checks the results, gives their instructions to the photographer, and the process starts again.

It's an immutable ballet.

I invite them to pose for me, and to be models.

The session is very quick, around ten photos in a minute or two.

Cyril Delettre did 180 portraits on Peel Street, a selection of these photos will be presented.

Gérard Henry: Hong Kong: Between Mountains and Sea at Latitude 22N

A black ink pen and paper always at hand, Gérard Henry explores, observes, and captures the essence of Hong Kong in his intricate, delicate, and highly detailed drawings. He offers us his vision of the city which is both poetic and warm.

What began as a form of meditation became a daily ritual in his life – an avid stroller and a quiet spectator, he puts down illustrated reflections, musings, and contemplations on paper.

In his portraits, Henry reveals the personality of his friends through their home or studio and the paraphernalia they surround themselves with. He feels that where a person lives is a projection of their inner self. Drawing and writing are, for him, two complementary ways of archiving the city. Most of Henry's sketches are reflections on Hong Kong's intangible spirit, its festivals, and its traditions.

Hong Kong: Between Mountains and Sea is an exhibition of Henry's drawings presented like a visual diary. They reflect his involvement in the art scene and strong connection to the city – a real testament to his deep affection for Hong Kong.

Silent Poetry: French Art Exhibition at Art of Nature Contemporary

Silent Poetry: French Art Exhibition at Art of Nature Contemporary

The artist evokes the viewers' visual experience and emotions through colours and their relationships. The rhythmic interplay of colours becomes a dynamic silent poetry, intensely captivating the viewers' souls. This exhibition, featuring the works of Cang Yuan, who resides in France, French artist Marc Tanguy and Jean‒Baptiste Née depict both outward and inward poetic expressions.

Marc Tanguy focuses on portraying the poetic essence of nature. He skillfully imbues his depicted landscapes with romanticism, rendering them mysterious, splendid, and liberated from fixed forms. The result is a near-abstract representation, giving birth to fantastical scenery. On the other hand, Cang Yuan turns inward, seeking the poetry of memory and conscious existence. The undulating lines seem to freeze certain entanglements, representing the artist's introspective reevaluation of their own life. Jean‒Baptiste Née was immersed in the depiction of mountains, rain, and snow. The subjects he portrayed always exhibited a subtle poetic quality. Under his brush, mountain ranges and clouds take on a unique vitality, imbued with philosophical significance. Through their artwork, the artists write poems of life itself.

Of Other Spaces: Heterotopia at Odds and Ends

Odds and Ends is pleased to present Of Other Spaces: Heterotopia, a two-person exhibition featuring works by French artists Barbara Penhouët and Vinent Ruffin. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with RHK STUDIO and will be on view from 2 May to 8 June 2024.

Of Other Spaces: Heterotopia explores concepts of emplacement and heterotopia theorised by French philosopher Michel Foucault, through contemporary paintings by Penhouët and Ruffin. The exhibition draws parallels between modes of meaning-making in the pictorial plane and sense-making in our reality, exploring the creations of illusion and otherness in both art historical and social contexts. Conceived as an open-ended question, rather than an answer, the exhibition aims to dissect our ever-changing world through the painted lens of two contemporary artists. Their practices oscillate between abstraction and figuration, attesting to the vitality of the painted medium and the reciprocal transformations that take place between philosophy and art.

Trailing Clouds of Glory at Oi Ling Art Gallery

For French May Arts Festival 2024, Oi Ling Art Gallery has selected 4 outstanding local Hong Kong Chinese artists whose artworks focus on the subject matter of identity, origin, and the quest to find the meaning to life - ideas and philosophies previously explored by several of the French Impressionist artists, indeed both Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

Both Fan Hong Bin and Tian Yan Hua are grounded in traditional Chinese ink techniques but have developed non-traditional colour schemes to help them express their spiritual thoughts on religion and ways to find inner peace.

Wing Chan and Cassian Lau by contrast, have an entirely different orientation. Wing Chan is a photographer. He uses his camera to capture the dynamic and different nuances of urban society. He then creates montages that speak beyond the aesthetic but also show the various rhythms and landscapes of an urban society. Similarly, Cassian Lau uses his art to comment on the different phenomena he observes in the modern world. Often his attention is drawn to the hypocrisy and shallowness of a society that focuses too much on materialism.  He uses black outlines, exaggeration and words to augment his artworks. His work is colourful, decorative, fun, and comedic.

Hong Kong Resonance at Boogie Woogie Photography

Hong Kong Resonance unites the artistic expression of Elsa Jeandedieu, Sylvain Holtermann, and Takeshi Shikama, creating a captivating tapestry that reflects the city's vibrant soul.

Surrounded by the energy of Hong Kong's bustling cityscape, Jeandedieu has been inspired in her quest for inner serenity. As she navigates the fast-paced rhythm of her artist life, she strives to find a resonating frequency that harmonises with nature.

Sylvain Holtermann is a French photographer who uses film and digital photography to explore a variety of familiar and unfamiliar territories through a poetic outlook largely influenced by the works of painters. Living in Hong Kong since 1995, his themes include the beauty of empty spaces, the resilience of nature in the city, and the resonance of time and elements in the landscape.

Hong Kong possesses diverse facets beyond its modern skyscrapers. As Takeshi Shikama became increasingly accustomed to the city, he discovered the richness of greenery, the profoundness of nature, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. One winter morning, guided by the wisdom path, Shikama came across the majestic Buddha statue veiled by a misty atmosphere. In those serene moments, he clicked the shutter of his camera, hoping to capture the tranquil landscape.

Sanctuary Frozen in Time is an exhibition that takes us on a photographic journey throughout Mongolia with Marc Progin leading us on a pilgrimage back to the origins of life, across a vast domain, where nature is the sole landlord and men abide by its laws.

Seen through the eyes of the photographer, Marc Progin, Mongolia is a haven of peace—an asylum for nature, wildlife and human beings living a nomadic life. A land bathed in an ocean of light, where each second is an eternity and eternity, like a fountain of youth, makes you forget your age. A land where, in the space of the immensities of light years, as cosmic dust in the universe, you learn what is humility. A land where nature is virgin and where life follows the cycle of the planets and seasons.

A Sanctuary Frozen in Time where nomads signed a pact to live in harmony with the natural world and settled to live of nothing other than the fruits of mother nature—a heritage that Marc Progin perpetuates through his photography.

Since the late 1980s in Italy, with a background in engineering and mathematics French-Colombian artist Pablo Posada Pernikoff has been experimenting with lines that express movement. He then moved to Japan in the 1990s, marking the start of a new journey that brought a different dimension of abstraction and vision towards nature and one’s surroundings, as well as a pliability for adaptation to different cultures.

In this body of work, Pablo expresses movement and change in time through lines and light that interact with different materials. Looking at the world now, he embraces fluidity as he navigates our ever-changing realities, with nature and science as a constant source of inspiration.

Blossoming Impressionism II at Galerie Koo

Brenda Hong and Chen Yi-Ching’s creations are odes to nature, where their inspiration is both derived from the awareness of nature and life. Both artists took an impressionistic approach, which are expressed as unique forms and substances on paper through Hong’s ink and colour and Chen’s distinctive nihon-ga technique. Through the language of art, the artists express their inner peace with ease and delicacy, creating a meditative and harmonious atmosphere in their paintings.

To Chen, the nature parallels human life, through which one can understand life’s transience. From the materials used in her paintings, to the scenes presented under each brushstroke, her works reveal the vitality and beauty of life. As for Hong, the process of creation seems to be a kind of restoration of nature… and a kind of spiritual healing. She believes we ought to rely on the observation and understanding of life to discover living sensory entities before internally transforming them into subjective emotions.

Cang Yuan: Awakening of Consciousness at Art of Nature

Art of Nature grandly presents Cang Yuan: Awakening of Consciousness, a solo exhibition showcasing the abstract paintings from the Conscience series created by the French-based artist, Cang Yuan, during the Covid epidemic period. The theme Awakening of Consciousness grew out of the interpretations of the artist himself about his works in letters to friends.

"By finishing the first piece of work of this series, I slowly started to touch the essence of perception, as well as the essence of consciousness."

The latest series of works reveals the connection between the human body, spirit, desire, space, external experience, moral sense, and worldview. As his art is further cut off from realism and nature, he transformed his aesthetic approach from scenic poetry to philosophical and spiritual poetry, rooted solely in the internal experience. Breaking through the ordinary paradigm of abstract art, Cang further amplifies his unique painting language, masters the fusion of colours, and integrates philosophical reflections. Cang's distinct personality and unparalleled painting style will make a long-lasting impression on its audiences.

The French-Chinese author is also a renowned artist and playwright. This is Gao's first solo exhibition after being awarded the Commander of the Legion of Honour in January. Most of the works in this exhibition were created in the last two years and are focused on landscapes. However, Gao's landscape paintings are different from the typical landscape paintings we mostly see. Gao does not portray the reality and perspective of the scene but pursues the changes of light, shadow, and air with various shades of ink on the rice paper. Therefore, whether it is fog, the moonlight, or the wind, the vision appears misty or hazy. The works constitute Gao's inner world, echoing his award-winning novel Soul Mountain.

In the mid-1950s, the workshops of Roger Malherbe-Navarre expanded on the light boxes of French painter Jean Crotti by layering pieces of glass into pictorial depictions (gemmail, French for 'enamel gem') of several of Picasso's paintings.

Impressed by the gemmistes' masterful assembling and fusing of carefully selected glass, Picasso declared 'A new art is born!' Made and exhibited to explore and display the medium's artistic possibilities, the results are simply astonishing. The selection of works on loan from a private collection, and on view at UMAG during the French May Arts Festival 2023, after a selective preview at the Landmark, shed a light on some of Picasso's most renowned painterly compositions.
