Matthieu Veno x José Conceptes: Urban Narratives at Galerie Koo

Urban Narratives, a captivating joint exhibition featuring the architectural works of renowned French photographer Matthieu Venot and the innovative Spanish photographer José Conceptes. The exhibition showcases two distinct yet complementary visions of urban environments, each artist offering a unique narrative through their lens.

Matthieu Venot, celebrated for his minimalist and vibrant architectural abstractions, captured the essence of geometry, colour, and light in cityscapes. His works reduce urban structures to clean lines and blocks of colour, transforming familiar city elements into surreal compositions. His photographs evoke an emotional resonance, highlighting the beauty in simplicity and everyday architecture.

In contrast, José Conceptes approaches urban spaces with a more introspective and monochromatic vision. His series explores the relationship between form, light, and shadow, highlighting the often-overlooked nuances of urban textures and structures. Conceptes' works, especially his black-and-white photography, distil urban settings into stark, almost meditative narratives that blur the line between realism and abstraction. His work emphasizes how light and shadow interact to create dynamic forms from static architecture.

Chen Xi has been continuously working on his “perfect-in-form” ink-pen drawing for over a decade—seems as if the shape already existed in the core of the paper and Chen purely helps it to develop. Joshua Leung and Kwong Kwok Wai: Reminiscences at Galerie Koo

Galerie Koo is delighted to present “Reminiscences” by Hong Kong artists Joshua Leung and Kwong Kwok Wai.

Exploring the relationship between people and the city is the central theme of Joshua Leungand Kwong Kwok Wai‘s work. Both are contemporary artists born and raised in Hong Kong, a unique place in terms of geography, culture and academic background, Leung and Kwong’s work conveys a dense expression of urban conditions and their own feelings about living in the city.

Joshua believes that art is a powerful tool for communicating values and perspectives – a glue that binds communities together. His works are not only narratives rooted in reality but also, retain a sense of self-conscious spirituality that is intertwined with the abstraction of the subject matter.

For Kwok Wai finding ‘Elysium’ is a universal desire, he expressed it in a contemporary approach using abstractions to push the boundaries of interpretation. Using old local maps as a reference in his painting process, he transformed them into organic marks and shapes of a new imaginary land. For him, it’s a process of rebirth and reconciliation with the unknown self.

Both artists record their feelings about Hong Kong, hoping to build a bridge through their works, thus communicating with the viewer and creating resonance.

Blossoming Impressionism II at Galerie Koo

Blossoming Impressionism II at Galerie Koo

Brenda Hong and Chen Yi-Ching’s creations are odes to nature, where their inspiration is both derived from the awareness of nature and life. Both artists took an impressionistic approach, which are expressed as unique forms and substances on paper through Hong’s ink and colour and Chen’s distinctive nihon-ga technique. Through the language of art, the artists express their inner peace with ease and delicacy, creating a meditative and harmonious atmosphere in their paintings.

To Chen, the nature parallels human life, through which one can understand life’s transience. From the materials used in her paintings, to the scenes presented under each brushstroke, her works reveal the vitality and beauty of life. As for Hong, the process of creation seems to be a kind of restoration of nature… and a kind of spiritual healing. She believes we ought to rely on the observation and understanding of life to discover living sensory entities before internally transforming them into subjective emotions.

Between Shapes and Forms at Galerie Koo

Between Shapes and Forms at Galerie Koo

In a world preoccupied with technology, there is something remarkable about painting. It connects us to the oldest and most basic forms of human self-expression.

Jean-Philippe Duboscq’s textured works and Jon Poblador’s minimalistic paintings compose an exhibition where experimentation, the bold mastery of know-how, and the power of the medium converge. Each with their own specificity and identity pays particular attention to composition.

Depending on the period, Duboscq expresses art through materiality, volumetry, abstraction, lyrical abstraction, and today, through a more conceptual approach to painting. Throughout Poblador’s career, as he matured and more clearly defined his message, specific patterns or motifs are often repeated in his art: compositions, techniques, processes, titles, etc.

In the artists’ eyes, creating was a fundamentally abstract pursuit. By immersing the viewer in pure colour and form, they hoped to generate a raw, emotional drama capable of reflecting the full spectrum of the human experience.

Cassian Lau: “What Year is it? at Galerie Koo

Galerie Koo is delighted to present a solo exhibition of Hong Kong provocative artist Cassian Lau, with a series of his iconic works, as well as the unprecedented twelve Zodiac paintings in celebration of the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit.

Cassian Lau finds inspiration from any and everywhere. Deeply inspired by American pop culture (particularly comics books and TV series), and some of the codes of the street art (graffiti, etc.) the work of Cassian conveys his reflections and messages about society and humankind, beyond their immediate “fun and light” appearance.

As a painter, Cassian records and expresses what he feels are social injustices in the world. Many of his works include quotes from ancient Chinese scholars extolling their wisdom. To him, the ethics and morals of his Chinese heritage should be retained and reminded. For him: “we must care more, love more and help more”.

Brenda Hong: In Dialogue with Nature at Galerie Koo

“Through the beauty of heaven and earth, unfolds the principle of all things.”

Galerie Koo is delighted to announce a solo exhibition “In Dialogue with Nature” by Hong Kong artist Brenda Hong.

Only by abandoning the idea of the supremacy of all things and by living in reverence with nature can one realise that we humans are insignificant in the face of the great creator of nature, and only then can we truly be in dialogue with nature on an equal footing and accept all the bounties that nature bestows on us.

Livy Leung and Isabella Mandelli: In Search of Fantasia at Galerie Koo

“In the process of creation, daily imaginations and fantasies are transformed into the work. As a result, it resonates strongly with the viewer and is therefore deeply rooted in their hearts.”

Galerie Koo is delighted to announce a joint exhibition “In Search of Fantasia” by Hong Kong artist Livy Leung and Italian artist Isabella Mandelli. Art in a variety of mediums embodies the artist’s personal vision and imagination, conveying touching stories and composing beautiful melodies. Through different mediums, artists translate their objectivity and sensuality into their creations, interestingly enough, both artists coincidentally offered different perspectives of the world as they see it.

We often try to live under various challenges and pressures, gradually forgetting the seemingly mundane but indispensable everyday experiences, like the faint light of a star, which flickers in and out of existence, and only by slowing down can we quietly experience the beauty in it. In this exhibition, two female artists of different mediums are invited to communicate with each other, expressing the subtleties of the changes they observed and felt in their works, injecting their emotions into their creations, and manifesting the thoughts they encountered in their daily lives. The themes of the works focus on the expression of oneself and one’s state of mind, and the relationship between man and nature.

Exploring the relationship between people and the city is the main theme of Vaan Ip and Pen So’s work.

Vaan Ip's sculptures are designed to present his city in a three-dimensional medium, and the result is not only interesting but also unexpectedly multifaceted. The work evolves with his ideas, from adding kites as a symbol of dreams, to dreaming about withholding a collapsing city. When everyone pursues their dreams and strives for excellence in all walks of life, society will naturally progress.

Pen So, on the other hand, likes to pay attention to what is happening around him. With his meticulous painting style, he reflects the real side of society and the rapid changes in the city. He wants to use his paintings to remind people to look around on the street, as anything can suddenly disappear without anyone’s acknowledgment. Both artists record their feelings about the city, hoping to build a bridge through their works to communicate and resonate with viewers.

Through his artworks, he brings the audience on a journey of his memories and expresses the emotion of isolation.
Harris is a contemporary painter best known for his abstract art. “As an abstractionist, I have almost always been drawn to the confident line, a stroke of colour, a splash of water that marks the surface and creates a story that we can all read into,” Harris stated.
The diffuse, structural abstraction are evocative and introspective. His works have been inspired by the environment and weather-related elements. The artworks are means for all of us to travel back to the times when the world is less restricted. The rich tones and the contrast of the colours draws parallels to the intensive emotions we experience when we face our memories, which remain a vital part of this series of abstracted landscapes.

“Anything that repeats will always make some kind of pattern. I primarily work with geometric shapes because its orderliness is appealing to me. And so, a grid structure will naturally show up when rectilinear shapes repeat,” Poblador stated.

Through the daily ritual of walking, across coastal terrain on Hong Kong Island and New Territories, I consider landscape as an escape rather than a view. On the edge of the Coast, on the boundary between earth and ocean, I explore, seeking memories beyond the buildings. From horizontal, the scenery transforms into an aerial view landscape, a map of my steps along the coast.”
Transformations of the landscape are translated through the forms and textures provided by the ancient and local maps.

With the courtesy of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Caroline Bouquet uses the ancient Chinese maps of Hong Kong to show the changes in the appearance of the coastline.
In parallel she explores the old maps of “Ile of France” and the sceneries around Paris and Versailles.
