Microwave International New Media Art Festival

A multitude of people, and yet a solitude!”

—Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

What is the difference between loneliness and solitude? For centuries, numerous writers and thinkers have contemplated these two states. To French philosopher and author Albert Camus, loneliness is always accompanied by estrangement and anxiety. In Six Lectures on Solitude, painter and writer Chiang Hsun defines solitude as synonymous with departure or withdrawal from a group, a category, or a parameter, which requires a candid understanding of oneself. Being alone and feeling lonely are distinct experiences: being alone is a choice often made to have a sense of inner peace, while feeling lonely evokes sadness from being excluded against your will. It is intriguing how a touch of sentimentality can prompt reflection on these nuances. Emotions unravel like numerous illusory threads—intricate and universally experienced. To deepen our understanding of how we feel when we are alone, we can turn to cultural historian Fay Bound Alberti’s A Biography of Loneliness. In the book, she argues loneliness is not a universal or ahistorical phenomenon, and that “oneliness” has long been regarded as a precious moment to seek inner peace or communion with God. However, as religion declined and society rapidly industrialized in the nineteenth century, “loneliness” emerged as a term and soon connoted the negative experience of alienation between individuals. Similarly, with the advancement of science and technology, society has shifted its focus from the group to the individual, giving rise to a contemporary loneliness. This exhibition does not aim to study the history of human emotions, but to explore the relationship between emotions and scientific and technological development. If the Industrial Revolution served as a catalyst for loneliness (as Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist shows), how has this dynamic evolved in our current world?

Wai Pong Yu Open Studio

Artist Wai Pong Yu will continue the ongoing chatting-drawing project on the 12-meter scroll. He started this drawing in a tiny studio in 2019 when he needed quiet reflection and hoped to see a mindscape projection of collective consciousness. Thanks to the exhibition in 2022, “Brushstrokes and Beyond” at Axel Vervoordt Gallery, Hong Kong, the drawing has reached out to the public with a flow of stories. Now, with a Hong Kong green mountain as a landscape background, the drawing continues to reflect the dark corners in visitors’ minds like a tranquil water surface. And thanks to the support of HKADC Artspace, we can enjoy a comfortable southern retreat for healing conversations and heated debates.

‍Come tell Pongyu a story on the Southside Saturday!

Seed To Textile 2024: BOLOHO Open Studio at CHAT Mills

To explore the intrinsic relationship between textiles and the environment, CHAT launched the community programme Seed to Textile in 2019, which has since been tracing textile manufacturing to its origin through planting and art making. In this year's programme, Guangzhou-based artist collective BOLOHO leads a six-month participatory art project that delves into the interactions between nature and the intricate cultural landscape in urban farming.

BOLOHO has initiated research and creative works on state-owned huaqiao nongchang (overseas Chinese farms), which were established to accommodate returned overseas Chinese between the 1950s and China's reform and opening up, examining the farms' deep connection with immigrant communities in Hong Kong.

Julie & Jesse: Meet the Artist and Guided Tour at Novalis Art Design

Julie & Jesse will be present for a guided tour of the exhibition ‘For What It’s Worth: Ceramic Experimentations by Julie & Jesse.‘ Rust, used cardboard wrapper, ceramic shards, roadside saplings — these are all things that we come in contact with on a regular basis, yet are so ordinary that we don’t usually register having seen them by the end of the day, and may even want to remove them to tidy up a place. But for Julie & Jesse, what are considered useless and unwanted to most are treasures to them. Each find becomes an opportunity to unpack stories across time and space, hidden within the material. The duo’s eye for curiosity and investigative approach have not only driven their entire creative practice — it is how they make sense of the world. The new works presented in this exhibition are both documentation and fruition of their ceramic experimentations in the past decade. What they create is a testimony to their superb technical skills, but it is always poetic and personal.

Curator-guided Tour ‘signals…here and there’ at Para Site

Join us for a curator-guided tour (in English) of ‘signals…here and there’, the third and final chapter of the exhibition series ‘signals…瞬息’ curated by Billy Tang and Celia Ho.

About the exhibition: ‘signals…here and there’ marks the culmination of a journey that has unfolded throughout a six-month period and which featured 25 artists and collectives in dialogue with an experimental display structure. In the context of this final exhibition chapter, ‘here and there’ evokes migratory movements, both historical and contemporary, within the context of Hong Kong’s transformation as a city. Such movements not only refer to the migrations of individuals, but also encompass the continuous changes that evolve with the concept of ‘home’. As such, the exhibition frames a fluid conception of ‘here’ from ‘there’ to negotiate the divide separating various histories as well as geographical distances.

Memory Court: the Soundings of Things at Para Site

A semi-improvised lecture performance with sounds and objects
Created by Linda Chiu-han Lai with Longman Luk and Valerie Mak

Episode 1: Tree of Life in the Memory Garden | Episode 2: The Narrow Passage to truths | Episode 3: Forensics | Episode 4: Insights | Episode 5: Micro Narratives | Episode 6: Sand Adrift, Dust Afloat

‘Memory Court’ is a material space to invoke the limits of interpretation andrepresentational practices. Language becomes sounding. Bodies connect with sounds.Motions evolve in space into eclectic object events. Dialectic structures take overhermeneutic circles.

In six short episodes, ‘Memory Court’ is a performative response to Matteo Ricci’s‘memory palace’, Aby Warburg’s non-verbal art history experiment Mnemosyne Atlas,Gerhard Richter’s anomic archive Atlas, Martha Rosler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen andYvonne Rainer’s Trio A: the Mind is Muscle—all embodied in an assemblage event the artisthas developed with the Floating Projects.

‘Memory Court’ is far from a cosy-intimate personal space. The artist thinks of it as a crimescene re-enacted with objects on trial while a court stenographer tenaciously records themulti-sensorial events with improvised strategies. ‘Memory Court’ could be a lecture performance, but it surely evolves into an object event, tangentially connected with the installations Tree of Life and Bamboo Percussive currently onview at ‘signals…瞬息’.

Colour-reveil experience with EnChroma at The Stallery

The Stallery is excited to announce that colour blind visitors are now able to borrow special EnChroma glasses for colour blindness during their visits to all upcoming exhibitions at the pop and street art gallery. Partnering with EnChroma to improve the gallery experience for colour blind visitors, The Stallery is the first gallery in Hong Kong to offer EnChroma colour blind glasses to enable accessibility to the arts of the people of Hong Kong! While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%), roughly 319,000 in Hong Kong alone.

On Tuesday, September 12 at 7pm, colour blind individuals including Ernest Chang, artist and founder of The Stallery, a local artist, and a public participant, will try on the EnChroma glasses for the first time while viewing Chang’s recently closed solo exhibition “Space Rich” for an emotional live reveal as they experience the colors of art. Their reactions and experiences will be captured on video and shared with the press and on The Stallery’s social media platforms post-event.

Meet the Artists <Sex Be With You> at Novalis Art Design

Don’t miss your chance to meet the artists of <Sex Be With You>! The artists will be here so drop by for a chill chat on the following dates.

FLORENCE LAM: 26 August Sat, 3 - 5:30 pm

Novalis Art Design is pleased to present “Sex Be With You,” a group show curated by Charmaine Tam featuring artists Batten and Kamp, IV Chan, FlorenceLam, and Lau Hong Lam. Sex is everywhere. We are surrounded by sex, especially in this modern consumerist age, where sex or the promise of it has been used to sell products through a near constant bombardment of imagery. The ready availability of online porn and other digital media has made the rampant consumption of sex possible. The proliferation of sexualisation in mainstream media has made it less taboo. Sex out of marriage is no longer frowned upon, we are urged to celebrate our own sexuality. This is indeed a thing to be celebrated! And yet, with sex becoming commonplace, it seems to have led to an increase in the mindless consumption of it. More and more people are increasingly blind to the power of sex, that in any act of sex, power is being exerted on, or being taken away from someone or something. Sex and power are inherently intertwined with each other. This exhibition is an invitation to both the audience and the artists to re-examine this relationship between sex and power that permeates our society.
