Karl Ting: Who Are You? at 13a New Street Art Gallery

In human relationships, communication can sometimes inadvertently hurt the other party. The metaphor of tongues clashing represents finding the right balance in a relationship, where neither party is harmed. However, if one side in the relationship cannot maintain this balance, the proverbial needle may end up piercing the other. Karl metaphorized love as honey, as love and honey share common qualities. Love is as sweet as honey, and has a sticky, viscous texture, just like honey. One must remain connected to their beloved, even sticking together like glue, inseparable.

VALASARA: Cosmic Construct at 13a New Street Art Gallery

13A New Street Art Gallery proudly presents the solo exhibition“ Cosmic Construct ” Solo Exhibition By VALASARA  from 29th September - 15th October , showcasing over 15 pieces of artwork. Culture and art have always been closely intertwined, especially traditional culture acting as fuel for art. 13A New Street Art Gallery brings us a cultural extravaganza from Bali, Indonesia, allowing us to explore the local traditional culture through art. It serves as a reminder of the importance of holding onto our cultural roots and collective identity amidst rapid societal development. The works of Valasara, an artist from Bali, Indonesia, are divided into two series: "ALIENATED COSMIC SERIES" and "HOLY JOURNEY SERIES" Approaching from the perspective of a native Balinese, Valasara delves into multiple layers to understand the local culture.

Valasara's Alienated Cosmic series delves into Balinese society and how it's affected when its essential element is disconnected. What happens to our identity when we're separated from our traditions and the Balinese crowd? Valasara zooms in on the unique individuals of Bali, borrowing inspiration from Batuan paintings that showcase regular folks going about their everyday lives. But in Valasara's interpretation, these figures transform into something peculiar and intriguing. Stripped of their Balinese identity, they become even more expressive, showing their humanity beyond the ‘exotic’ image associated with Bali. This series challenges how we see things and forces us to think about the consequences of breaking away from tradition. Can we still find our voice when we're distanced from our cultural roots? Valasara's exploration of identity investigates what it truly means to be human. By navigating the intricate relationship between tradition and individuality, the Alienated Cosmic series uncovers different aspects of our existence. This series raises a conversation that goes beyond borders and cultures, reminding us of the deep connections that tie us together as humans. It reminds us of how important our cultural heritage is in shaping our lives and in turn, how our collective identity shaped our society.

13a The New Street Art Gallery will present the "Dancing with Flowers" solo exhibition of Fapopo from January 20 to February 12, with more than 30 works on display. The exhibition is full of a strong New Year atmosphere, and the main axis of the exhibition is the Maneki Cat, people and the most recognizable flower works. The artistic attainments of Fapopo are like those of the Hong Kong version of Yayoi Kusama and the female version of Zeng Zaochai. She is like Zeng Zaochai on the wall and under the ground, graffiti with a huge creative brush of personal style. She is also known as the “Hong Kong Yayoi Kusama”. Fapopo created a unique style of painting and painted the same things in the same work with her talent of self-taught. Such an artistic collision has brought fresh impressions.

The origin of the name "Fapopo" comes from Fapopo's predestination with flowers when she was young. She likes flowers very much and sells flowers at the Mongkok Flower Market to support her family. Fapopo's creative medium is not limited to plane or canvas. She likes to paint her works on different daily necessities, and most of them are objects that have been abandoned in the garbage station, such as the flat-bottomed wok for cooking, the suitcase for travel, the classic yellow plastic duck, etc... All of them are Fapopo's canvas. Fapopo's colorful and vivid color matching and highly unique painting style are combined with those ordinary life products, so that we can see a familiar and novel scenery.

SurrealHK: The Collective Surreal Memory at 13A New Street Art Gallery

SurrealHK, a surrealism photographer from Hong Kong, held a solo exhibition in 13a New Street Art Gallery for the second time. The theme of this exhibition is "The Collective Surreal Memory by SURREALHK Solo Exhibition", which will be staged from 2nd December to 18th December, bringing 33 artworks. Apart from the most popular surrealism photography works. SurrealHK also brought new surprises to fans, by adding Hong Kong's iconic neon elements to the works. Let the brand-new concept be integrated into the graphic art, and make the surrealism sublimate to another level. In addition, SurrealHK collaborated with students from the BA (Hons) in Interactive Media of Hong Kong Polytechnic University to create five three-dimensional Fotomo creations with different styles.

SurrealHK takes the collective memory of Hong Kong people as the theme this time, and the pet appear vividly in different corners of Hong Kong, which makes the work slightly permeated with a lovely atmosphere. The author hopes to bring a little joy and positive energy to everyone through the exhibition in this post epidemic era. At the same time, we also want to use the camera to retain some familiar things at the moment of pressing the shutter, such as Jumbo Floating Restaurant, which was once one of the landmarks of Hong Kong, that we didn't have time to say goodbye to it. SurrealHK once again brought it to everyone's eyes and left behind good memories. Trams, minibus, subway stations, temple streets, and the huge buildings in Quarry Bay, commonly known as the "Monster Building", have been rotating with the great wheel of the times in Hong Kong from the things we are most familiar with everyday to the back. Like Hong Kong people of different ages, they have witnessed the ups and downs of Hong Kong. This time they will also appear in SurrealHK's works, so that everyone can find a familiar and warm resonance in the appreciation of the works. Hong Kong's environment and all aspects are changing.

The reality may make you feel frustrated at many times. There are also many precious things that have disappeared or are slowly entering the darkness silently. The absurd things keep happening, SurrealHK hopes that you can face all things with an optimistic attitude, live in the moment, and do more things that can make you happy. The time of life is very short, no matter you are in a good mood or a bad mood, you must continue to live, so why not choose to face everything with a cheerful attitude? Hong Kong is also known as the Pearl of the Orient. In the last century, colorful neon billboards were everywhere in the downtown market. With the progress of science and technology, this product of the era full of sense of the times was gradually eliminated. However, neon lights still play a very important role in the minds of the public. SurrealHK has brought them into its own works, making a variety of different types of collective memories bloom at the same time.

Distort Monsters: Monster Mayhem: One Step Beyond at 13a New Street Art

The cute and funny monster is visiting 13A New Street Art Gallery this summer, a series of monster characters created by artist Distort Monsters. This time, he brought the Hong Kong audience the second wave of “One Step Beyond” in the Monster Mayhem series. The monsters each have lively expressions and unique appearance, which makes people unexpectedly look forward to the true face of these funny creatures. In this collection of works, artists take aliens, robots, deep-sea creatures, etc. as the blueprint of creation, and their own stories give each monster a unique soul. Distort monsters once said that every monster he created was an idea in his mind and even his own feelings. In this way, the whole series, each creation is a small fragment of his life. Through his paintings, he captures those plots that can touch him in an instant, and seals the heat of life in his works, so that a moment of fireworks in life will not be fleeting.

Distort monsters, an emotional artist from the Philippines, began his street art career in 2009. He started his art career by painting skateboard stickers, and he was having issues with his mental health for a long time, and what accompanied him was artistic creation. He liberated himself by creating these monster characters, found his inner peace, and was cured from art. Recently, the monsters he created obviously have more different forms than before, with bright and powerful color contrast, and the overall picture is happy, lively and energetic. This change is the positive impact of the good medicine of artistic creation. People can influence life with life, and art can nourish the soul. We often hear people say "it's OK to be not OK", which is calling on us to accept our weakness. Accepting it does not make us more helpless. On the contrary, it is a process of treating ourselves and embracing the weakest self. Find the most comfortable way to get along with your innermost self, bravely open your deepest place, and learn how to treat yourself to create a stronger self.

When it comes to sweets, many people have no resistance to them. The craving is as important as breathing. At the moment of eating, the tiny bits of happiness that we can feel all over our body is indeed remarkable. The sweet atmosphere wraps the taste buds, which cannot only satisfy our momentary appetite, but also bring an infinite sense of satisfaction. Urban people live a hard life of camp and service every day in a high-pressure environment. Having sweets is definitely a small blessing for them and a good medicine to comfort their tired hearts. Although the sense of “simple pleasure” is insignificant, its occurrence and existence can permeate different degrees of sweetness into life. Simple pleasure has the same effect when visiting or when we eat sweets.

CandyMary, a talented artist from Taiwan, once had a "sweet addiction" due to her love of candies. She was very attracted by the colorful wrapping paper and various flavors of sugar-coated candies, she has become a sugar addict under the constant unconscious intake. In this era of information explosion, the beauty function of social media, popular online restaurants, entertainment news, etc. She felt that such information was like an ice cream bucket in the freezer got hollowed out, but it was never refilled. At last, she left an open question worth our self reflection.

For most of us, a “thread” is merely an ordinary object used in everyday life. For Hong Kong-based thread portrait artist Alfred Cheng however, he sees thread as his muse - his medium in which he brings to life a visual language. A thread is Cheng’s singular, exclusive tool he uses to convey his artistic vision, and his meticulous techniques present the subjects in his portraits in a stunningly realistic fashion. Cheng takes a single thread of yarn over 5,000 meters long and weaves it by hand around a circular wooden canvas frame made up of around 300 to 600 metal nails to create hyper realistic masterpieces.

The classic roles in movies have always been an important element that accompanies the growth of the public. Alfred Cheung refuses to utilize traditional painting tools and paints to create his portraits. Instead, he uses a thread and an algorithm that outlines the complex structure of the portrait. After mapping out the portrait over the canvas, Cheng then individually hammers metal nails along the perimeter of the canvas’s circular wooden frame, keeping within a precise measured guideline to keep every nail at a specific distance apart. There is little margin for error in his technique. Cheng’s portrait interprets a new dimension to the relations between algorithms and thread art, which redefines the nature of "painting".

“Raise Hands” in the air is an interesting action, there are many meanings behind it. This is a simple action that everyone does and knows in their lives. We called it “Hands Up”. It could be surrender or signify assent. On the other hand, it could be participation, being for or against something.

2CHOEY, an artist born and raised in Thailand, who plays artworks with hands reinterpret pop culture. This is his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, 2CHOEY trying to explore the hidden meaning behind “HANDS UP”, to investigate the social phenomenon, the communication beyond languages, to evaluate current popular cultures and issues. “Put your hands up” are not just a superficial message, but also there is a hidden agenda that represents morality and fearlessness, and it is something that worth reflecting on.

CROSS TOO OVER is a collection about the current social situation under the influence of the global pandemic by contemporary artist Ryan San. Ryan uses a satirical way to bring out the chaotic scene created by excessive consumption and “fast” culture, where creativity and consumption are losing their boundaries.

Characters in each painting look like they’re melting and exhausted as if they are shouting to the viewers they’re worn out for being overused. Making use of a humorous form of expression, Ryan’s ‘Cross Too Over’ collection is challenging the new era of art.
