RE:URGENT at Young Soy Gallery

To coincide with Art Month in Hong Kong, Young Soy Gallery is proud to present a group exhibition in a vacant office in Central with five Hong Kong artists, including Go Hung, Louie Jaubere, OBSRVR, Plastered 8 and Riya Chandiramani. Titled “RE:URGENT”, the exhibition takes on the urgency to confront and evoke reflections on the inequities and systemic challenges and power structures that govern our day-to-day in a humorous manner.

The five featured artists reflect in their artistic practices that artists are not mythical creatures, but are ordinary people who walk among us. They are “contemporary” artists as they live under the same contexts as we do; their artworks are manifestations of their experiences and observations of the same “contemporary” moment we share with them.

Opening reception: March 13th, 2025, 6:00pm - Late

Venue address: 15/F, Universal Trade Centre, 3 Arbuthnot Road, Central

Missed Calls at Young Soy Gallery

Missed calls drift between Durban, Cape Town, Japan and Hong Kong, from Mother Nature to urban dwellers, until four artists from Hong Kong and South Africa unite, breathing life into anthropomorphic creatures and nature’s cadence, blending skyscrapers and natural wonders.

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present Missed Calls, a group exhibition featuring the works of Hong Kong based Japanese artist TAXA & Hong Kong artist ZLISM, alongside South African artists Ross Turpin & Resoborg.

As the four artists come together in the city having been over 10,000 km apart, their reunion prompts them to respond to the missed calls from one another, then to nature’s unanswered calls through art. Along with their distinct experiences that come from their diverse backgrounds, they unravel vibrant narratives inspired by the spirit and soul of their familiar land, intertwining wildlife with cityscapes, bridging the distance across continents.

Admit .ti We are narcissists. From commissioned portraits of kings and nobles to "leaked" nudes of celebrities, we can't help but be obsessed with immortalising our image.

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present "Unmasked", a group exhibition that gathers four Hong Kong artists, Mr Koo, Louie Jaubere, Jerome Leung, Sai Pradhan, and one international artist, Jake Scharbach, to challenge the tradition of portrait making, propelling viewers to see portraiture as a mirror that reflects societal conditions and the shared emotions of our time.

"Unmasked" invites viewers to re-examine "portraiture", prompting them to see beyond what is visible, abandon the giddy masks, and contemplate on the complexity of the human condition that makes each face. Rip away mask-clad faces and reconsider the images people present to the world at Young Soy Gallery between the 26th of September until the 13th of October.

“As we grow up, the world around us becomes more complex. Wars, conflicts, disputes, disappointments, they all could seemingly be summarised with mere words, but yet too intricate to be comprehended. Around us, there are way too many conflicts that are incomprehensible…”  — Humchuk, 2024

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present Why No Hug?, a solo exhibition featuring the latest body of works by the Hong Kong artist, Humchuk (Ricky Luk). Having abandoned a career in architecture 10 years ago, Luk embarked on a journey to capture the intricacies of the human experience by translating everyday dialogues into his minimalistic expressions. The series, “Why no Hug?” is Luk’s response to the challenges we encounter in our evolving identities in the midst of a chaotic time when wars and conflicts are prevalent. To him, these struggles though can be encapsulated in mere words, the emotional impact they have on us defies easy descriptions.

Francesco Lietti: Beyond the Mirage at Wyndham Social

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Wyndham Social is proud to present Francesco Lietti’s solo show, Beyond the Mirage, in collaboration with Young Soy Gallery.

Reminiscent of the excitement of arriving by air to a faraway place, Beyond the Mirage encapsulates the plethora of sensations felt as one first enters this eclectic metropolis. Familiarity bleeding into strangeness, Lietti captures the overflowing promises of opportunity, the complex feelings of density, energy, and vibrancy of Asian cities within a cacophony of bright colours.

Through gentle abstraction, Lietti renders reality into a two-dimensional plane, evoking the sense of celebration and surprise that the city brings to us in every moment of every day. Whether it be the rolling hills, the matrix of skyscrapers, or even the fresh laundry hanging on balconies, Lietti does not fail to enliven the remarkably dense yet immensely human quality of this unique city in his oeuvre. Beyond the Mirage solicits us to see that tangled within the abstracted cityscape lies the true essence of a tightly-knit community, awakening a vision of ourselves as we really are and as we can be.

Flânerie by Young Soy Gallery at Kong Art Space

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present, Flânerie, a celebration of the narratives of our beloved city through the eyes of five recent and prospective graduates from Hong Kong. Elegantly dressed office-dwellers darting through the rain, domestic workers waiting patiently outside a school to pick up children, water drops from the air-conditioners above…These seemingly mundane scenes are what form the unique portrait of Hong Kong. Such details can only be observed through the act of Flânerie, meaning to aimlessly and idly observing the intricacies of the everyday happenings on the streets.

Embodying this practice, Angelique Santos, Celine Lam, Jerome Leung, Lewis Lee, and Max Lee depict their observed social landscapes, memories, and the dwellers of Hong Kong. Their works act as vehicles for introspection and social commentary, touching upon themes of family history, social dichotomies, public space, and melancholy.

Zoë Marden: Becoming Creature by Young Soy

“We are all in the process of becoming, of becoming creature.
We as beings are continually connected through the ebb and flow of water that passes through us in the form of drinking, of tears, of piss, of sweat. This connects us to bodies of water, to the earth and to all non-human beings. It is a direct challenge to the concept of us being discreet individuals and instead opens up the endless potential of interconnectivity that goes beyond the human.
How can this process of interconnectivity break down the human-centric hierarchies that are wounding our planet and causing environmental catastrophe?
How can we embrace the truths that are in our body, the truths in embodiment? What does it mean to live as an embodied being? How can watery embodiment help us to expand outside of the constraints of sex and gender and allow us to swim in queerer waters?
How do we build the Hydrocommons of our dreams?”

Benson Koo: Monxxters at Young Soy Gallery

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present Monxxters, a Benson Koo solo exhibition.

People familiar with Koo know he is no stranger to darkness. By confronting and apprehending the darkness in this new body of work, Koo makes palpable the horrors that permeate his dreams, and his day-to-day life. The images are fragmented, ominous, and vicious. Unlike his previous body of work, he has created this new series by engaging a myriad of materials such as ink, acrylic, oil stick, marker pen, archival paper, and rice paper. A desired evolution in his work is developed by employing new techniques recently influenced by his time in Barcelona, Spain throughout 2022. An example of this is imprinting the texture of exterior street walls on paper before tearing and burning it to be morphed and cast onto wood; the fractured recollections of his comatose state are made ever more visceral.

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present Echoes, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong-based Canadian artist Peter Yuill. This new body of work channels scientific, existential, and spiritual energies that are intertwined with one another, manifested through geometrical forms.

Born in Ottawa, Canada in 1984, Yuill translates the act of painting into a spiritual practice by meticulously hand drawing each circular form determined by an innate drive. Visually reminiscent of wavelengths, his works invite us to resonate within the layers of line and form. Only through opening our senses will we be able to feel every vibration of the human essence in the indefinite state of being.

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present DELIRIUM, a group exhibition featuring Riya Chandiramani, Russ Rubin, and Stern Rockwell.

The term ‘delirium’ has two definitions, and in this case, both are applied. For the artists, their works are a mechanism and the release of a disturbed state of mind, while for the viewer they are wild excitement and doses of ecstasy. While this can apply to a great deal in the context of art history, it is viciously appropriate for this exhibition considering the subject matter of each artist, and the overarching otherworldly aesthetic language.

Patrik Wallner: Paper Trails by Young Soy Gallery at Kong Space

Born in West Germany in 1987, internationally renowned Hungarian filmmaker, skateboarder and artist Patrik Wallner has focused much of his career on storytelling as well as dissecting the convoluted nations within Eurasia & Africa. Through his Visualtraveling documentaries, he has captured life within North Korea, dove into all countries ending in ’stan, produced and directed pieces along the Trans-Siberian, Madagascar, Yemen, Myanmar, and Iran to name a few.

Over the last decade, Wallner has harvested a compilation of unusual banknotes throughout his expeditions. It has always been a fascination for him to explore how a single piece of paper can give such a lucid glimpse into the history of a nation through the pictured historical figures, landscape and cultural traits. By painstakingly folding, and reshaping them, Wallner has produced graphic structures and symmetrical patterns, that illuminate the sheer power these banknotes behold. As payments are heading into a digital age, these twentieth century banknotes will be our last reminder of a time when we all had a piece of art crumpled up in our pockets and wallets.

This is a unique show for Young Soy Gallery, as 30% of the proceeds will be donated to a variety of different skateboarding NGOs such as CubaSkate, Make Life Skate Life, Pushing Myanmar and Salad Days. These SkateNGOs make it possible for the underprivileged skateboarding communities to receive plywood to make boards, build parks and put a roof over the heads of street kids who have shown a passion for this subculture; a cause that Wallner is passionately championing.

Group Exhibition 'Flesh and Bones' by Young Soy Gallery

Young Soy Gallery is proud to present Flesh and Bones, an exhibition featuring the works of Benson Koo, Richard Phipson, and Alyssa Tang.

These three artists explore themes that relate to the human body, and what lies beyond. Tang’s works focus on the exploration of the body, and highlight the beauty found in its forms, colours, and textures. Koo focuses on eerie, skeletal figures as a means of self-reflection. Lastly, Phipson’s works, although predominantly abstract, feature a skull motif to signify our mortality, and the unseen that exists within all of us. Even though the work by these three artists come together harmoniously, much of the allure lies in the unseen. This ‘unseen’ is constructed of the artists’ ideology, and each of their respective creative processes of what they are trying to communicate while simultaneously veiling motives so that the viewers can participate with their own interpretations.

We invite you to come and engage with the work by these three radical artists, and the symbiotic relationship between the pieces while also allowing your imagination to run wild. After all, flesh and bones is the only thing we have in common, beyond that it’s all uncharted.

Snap, Crackle… Patriarchy? Young Soy Gallery presents Milkmade, a series of Riya Chandiramani’s cereal box creations. Sexual and cynical, colourful and (almost) consumable, the paintings in Chandiramani’s cereal box series provide insight into ideas of worship, capitalism and power. Chandiramani encourages her viewers to question the patriarchal society we often readily accept, by depicting fierce female goddesses who perform life-giving acts. She rejects censorship, and instead embraces natural beauty and the female figure. We believe Milkmade adds some much-needed flavour to everyone’s morning cereal.

Young Soy Gallery in collaboration with Sauce Lifestyle presents ‘Ying Baau Geng’, or ‘dope enough to explode mirrors’. This collaboration defies traditional labels by displaying street art on the walls of a barbershop, rather than exhibiting within a studio or gallery space. In doing so, the three artists represented – Nelson Caban, Louise Soloway Chan, and Ross Turpin – ‘explode’ the idea of conventional exhibitions. Visitors who come to Sauce do not enter a compulsory viewing room; instead, they enter a laidback barbershop with the suggestion of a viewing room. We hope Ying Baau Geng provides the people with a more approachable outlook on emerging contemporary art in Hong Kong.
