Colours of the Universe at Sun Museum

This is the first exhibition of ancient Chinese artifacts since Sun Museum relocated, and it is also a highlight of the museum's annual "Sun Delight" program.

The exhibition will showcase 120 pieces of jade and stone carvings from the Song to Qing dynasties, all from private collections at the Little Moon Pavillion and Songde Tang. The exhibition is divided into two parts: the first part features carved jade and stone pendants, while the second part focuses on decorative art objects made of rare colour stones, including agate, white jade, lapis lazuli, coral, etc.

Chinese ancient arts and crafts are outstanding, and the brilliant achievements in jade and stone carving can be attributed to the various natural gemstones, the extraordinary skills of artisans throughout Chinese history, and the remarkable creativity of ancient people in expressing auspicious meanings through visual forms. Visitors to the exhibition can admire the scholar’s objects and decorative items made from various jade and stone carvings, some of which even come with original stands crafted by artisans from the Qing Palace's workshops. Through the auspicious meanings of some of the works, one can also appreciate the ingenuity of the ancients.

HKI Knits at Sun Museum

HKI Knits at Sun Museum

In ancient times, Chinese silk became a supreme luxury in the western world. Today, textile from Hong Kong have also penetrated the European market. Between the late 20th century and early millennium, textile industry in Hong Kong was flourished and became important among international trade. The success of Hong Kong International Group (HKI) is an outstanding example. Their development over the past 50 years reflected the rise and fall of Hong Kong textile industry as well as the innovative spirit of Hong Kong people.

HKI’s knitted products are directly exported to European, American and Japanese markets, with its honing skills in fusing western designs with Chinese elements. For instance, their graphics on knitwear resemble Chinese embroidery pattern, sewed with sequins and transformed into three-dimensional decorations; refashion the cutting design from slim-fit to loose-fit, with Chinese traditional overlapping panels that covered from left over right or right over left. When the world’s interest toward Chinese textile waned, HKI shifted the focus towards manufacturing technologies and bringing about the invention of washable silk, maintained its competitive edge in the international market.

This exhibition not only showcases iconic products from the 10 brands of HKI, but also displays rare textile machinery that produced these fabulous pieces. They reveal an East-West artistic exchange in a form that are both classic and fashionable.

Duet of Flowers and Birds: Paintings by Chow Kunglei at Sun Museum

Sun Museum is proud to present its latest exhibition “Duet of Flowers and Birds: Paintings by Chow Kunglei”, featuring the works of Chow Kung Lei, a Hong Kong ink painter and art educator. The exhibition will be running from January 12—April 6 2023.

Chow Kunglei graduated from the Shanghai Institute of Art in 1926. He was the pupil of the famous Russian painter Victor Stepanowitsch Podgoursky. Majoring in Western painting, he excelled in sketch portraits. On the other hand, Chow studied under famous Chinese painters Wu Changshuo and Li Teifu, and was much influenced by their painting styles. Chow developed his own trend by integrating Chinese and Western painting techniques. With lines and strokes taken from Chinese paintings, and the alternate use of dark and light colours from Western art, Chow created pieces with quick and unrestrained brushstrokes, with a sense of vitality.

With his masterful incorporation of techniques drawn from the crux of different schools of art, Chow’s artistic achievements brought great delight to Wu Changshuo, leading Wu to see Chow as his well-qualified successor. Chow and Zhang Daqian became friends despite their age differences. After a painting session between the two, even Zhang exclaimed, “You are able to reproduce subjects which I am skilled in drawing with an excellent likeness; and yet I am unable to master figure drawings, which are clearly your forte.”
