Phoebe Hui: The Garden of Resemblances at Oil Street Art Space

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

"The Garden of Resemblances" is an exhibition inspired by the ancient doctrine of signatures, a belief that the visible forms of natural objects reflect their hidden properties, particularly in medicine. While modern science has rejected this notion, its evocative associations provide a rich springboard for artistic imagination. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s concept of the episteme from The Order of Things, the work examines the shifts in knowledge structures from traditional to modern thought.

By transforming the exhibition space into a dreamlike, otherworldly environment, this exhibition features kinetic installations that blurs the boundaries between nature, technology and imagination. The garden serves as an experiential landscape, inviting visitors to wander in the liminal space between the real and the imagined. Integrating the organic with the mechanical and the natural with the artificial, the installation offers a meditative journey through the interplay of historical imagination and contemporary innovation.

Archaic Curator Series: The Charm of Colour — Travel with Ceramics through Time and Space at Oi!

In 2022, Oi! launched the Archaic Curator Series, inviting Chinese art historians and curators to collaborate with us on exhibitions that engage with traditional Chinese art through innovative forms of expression, bridging the old and the new. This third exhibition of the series is guest curated by Dr Wang Guanyu, Associate Curator (Antiquities) of the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK Art Museum), with three accomplished artists from Jingdezhen and Hong Kong—Gu Yue, Fiona Wong and Caroline Cheng—participating.

The challenge of balancing tradition and modernity has always been an important topic to the creation of art. Each of the three artists featured in this exhibition approaches their works from a different angle: ceramic traditions, contemporary ceramics and the sustainable future of ceramic art. Focusing on the rich essence and endless possibilities of using colours in ceramics and taking inspiration from the CUHK Art Museum’s collection, the artists infuse their own technical artistry and aesthetics into their works, showcasing their personal understanding and interpretation of contemporary ceramic art.

In recent years, British artist Gary Card, who has been highly sought after in the international art and fashion scenes, is set to have his first large-scale solo exhibition organised in Hong Kong. Gary, a multi-talented artist, works across various creative fields, including painting, sculpture, illustration, graphic design and set design, all of which have received high praise. He is frequently invited to collaborate with renowned artists and fashion designers worldwide, and is hailed as one of the most prominent young creators in London.

During his visit to Hong Kong, Gary Card was deeply fascinated by the unique blend of Chinese and Western cultures in our city. He found inspiration in it and used his vibrant and playful artistic style to transform the Grade II historic building of Oi! into a contemporary multimedia art scene. Through animation, sculpture and painting, he immerses the audience in a visually stunning and sensory experience. Gary Card has also created the first giant outdoor artwork in Hong Kong, bringing a whole new artistic landscape to the Oi! Lawn.

Nadim Abbas: Ventriloquists' Stone at Oi!

Nadim Abbas excels in fabricating complex and ambiguous scenarios that challenge the threshold of human cognition, reconfiguring our perception of seemingly familiar surroundings. In this exhibition, he starts off by investigating the aesthetics of miniature dioramas by constructing a surrealistic landscape in the gallery. Employing a witty orchestration of sound, light and performance, Nadim invites us to embark on a journey through the strange recesses of the imagination. This five-month art programme will offer a valuable opportunity for the artist and audience alike to observe, influence and inspire each other.

Oi! Spotlight, the annual signature programme of Oi!, aims to facilitate interaction between different places in the world and respond to innovative ideas. In 2023, we invited Nadim Abbas, Choi Sai-ho and Lu Yang to participate in Oi! Spotlight and present their works at three old and new exhibition spaces.

Archaic Curator Series: Seon1 — Cultural Symbols of Chinese Landscape Painting

Oi! is located in North Point, which is home to many immigrants from Fujian and is therefore known as "Little Fujian". The Hokkien term kóo-tsá (meaning "archaic") is used to describe something that gives a feeling of history and nostalgia, highlighting the archaic flavour that permeates the "Archaic Curator Series". The first exhibition of this series is "Seon1:  Cultural Symbols of Chinese Landscape Painting", co-organised with the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and guest-curated by Dr Phil Chan, Associate Curator of Painting and Calligraphy at the Art Museum. Six artists were invited — Wong Hau-kwei, Ou Da-wei, Raymond Fung Wing-kee, Hung Hoi, Hung Fai and Yau Wing-fung — to reinterpret the collections from the Art Museum by learning from the works of their predecessors. The exhibition aims to show how contemporary artists draw on the legacies of traditional Chinese art and culture to develop their own unique style.

This exhibition is held in conjunction with the exhibition at the Art Museum, CUHK, "Majestic Vistas: Selected Landscape Painting from the Collection of the Art Museum, CUHK", showcasing more than 40 landscape paintings from the Yuan to the Modern period, offering visitors a "travel" experience, in which they can take inspiration from the beauty of both nature and brushwork.

Guest Curator: Phil Chan
Artists: Wong Hau-kwei, Ou Da-wei, Raymond Fung Wing-kee, Hung Hoi, Hung Fai and Yau Wing-fung

"Oi! OnSite Artists in Residence and Exhibition Project" invited local artists to conduct regular research and create site-specific works starting in early 2022. They have injected contemporary imagination and meaning into Oi!—where old meets new—through their artistic perspective.

Data Collecting (Universe) by Jessica Fu and her collaborators is a research-based art project starting with found objects in Oi!. A series of sci-fi symbols that resemble these objects have been created to respond to the historical context of the site. The fluidity of the exhibition experience, the collective written sci-fi allegory, the re-construction of symbols, and internet-based work pose questions about the reality of the historical site, ensuring its collective memory through the power of art.
