The Girl Next Door - The (New) Era of Zhu Xinjian at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

In the afternoon, she had her hair permed at Jane & Joan Hair Salon before spending hours dancing and sweating at a disco with a couple of her best friends. Under the starry night, she returned to her room, took off her lace short-sleeved blouse and hip-wrapped skirt, showing her silk briefs and the bra that she had requested someone to order from Shenzhen (or possibly Hong Kong), stretched her back in front of the mirror, and then stood in a sensual S-shape.

This is the girl next door created by Zhu Xinjian. She could have been in Nanjing, Hangzhou, or Suzhou in the 1980s and 1990s. Zhu, who was strictly schooled in fine arts, abandoned the squareness of painting picture-story books and turned his concentration to the girls on the streets, using his ink unconstrained but exquisite, decadent but dedicated, and looking but caring.

Old Master Q’s 60th-anniversary at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

Lucie Chang Fine Arts is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Old Master Q’s 60th-anniversary manuscript pop-up exhibition from August 28th to September 8th!

In the early 1960s,  Alfonso Wong (1925~2017.1) created the comics series “Old Master Q” (OMQ) by using his eldest son’s name Wong Chak as a pseudonym. Under Wong's humor and talent, four to six-panel comic strips were created, with each panel titled with a four-character idiom, bringing to life an imaginative story world for readers. The "Old Master Q" series reflects the vitality of Hong Kong's urban life and the diversity of art, becoming the favorite reading material for the old and the young Chinese for decades.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the display of precious original manuscripts drawn by Alfonso Wong and Joseph Wong. Additionally, Joseph Wong's artistic vision will be showcased through a series of stunning OMQ paintings, where the colourful or black-and-white OMQ characters are brought to life. As the artist expressed, art can take different forms and perspectives. Old Master Q is not just a comic character, but also a source of inspiration for artists.

"He is the Hong Kong legendary figure who treated public spaces as his canvas."

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to present, in collaboration with L+/Lucie Chang Fine Arts, the exhibition "Rediscovering the King of Kowloon" in the Goethe-Gallery and the Black Box Studio of the Goethe-Institut from May 17 to June 20, 2024.

The purpose of this exhibition is to allow everyone to embark on a journey of rediscovering the King of Kowloon, a figure who transcended artistic boundaries and became a symbol of Hong Kong. In his life story, we feel the resonance brought by his indomitable spirit. Throughout his life, Tsang Tsou Choi, also known as the King of Kowloon, never considered himself an artist. To him, graffiti in the streets of Hong Kong was merely a pure form of self-expression. With the passage of time and the shift in Hong Kong's identity, his works, which were once controversial, now carry multiple universal values.

In collaboration with L+/Lucie Chang Fine Arts

Exhibition Opening: 17.5.2024 (Fri), 5:00pm - 6:30pm

Novo: Serendipper at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

“Serendipper,” Novo’s first exhibition in Hong Kong, is a collection of his still life and interior scenes.

“Serendipper” referring to “one who finds joy by chance,” presents unexpected encounters with a charming scene in an unfamiliar place, or an object that has been waiting for you in a huge vintage market that you need a whole day to explore all. Even a tin case or glasses on your desk that you see every day sometimes evoke some intense emotions. Novo loves the joy and excitement of these serendipitous discoveries. In most cases, the discovery feels surprising, but on second thought those situations are something so common that we often miss them. So the artist focuses on expressing his own universe rather than depicting the external world, and develops himself by closely paying attention to the psychology of his happy moments.

Novo, who unflinchingly spotlights his life through works across diverse genres, grew up in a homogenized and controlled society, which made him thirsty for diversity, and has since been inspired by objects that speak to him. Novo's work consistently expresses his outlook on life in pursuit of happiness. The artist, for example, constantly explores and depicts his favorite objects, plants that grow freely, and feelings of joy and excitement. He says it would be meaningless to delve into the artist's intentions, as he just wanted to express emotions and feelings through his work.

The Other Side at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

Lucie Chang Fine Arts is delighted to announce the upcoming exhibition The Other Side in June, featuring the works of eight young talented female artists born in or after 1980s: Alice Lin, Angel Hui, Bao Ho, Gedvile Bunikyte, Morgan Xinmo Wu, XZOO studio- M&X (Margie and Xinru) and Yu Xiao. Each artist brings her unique perspective on nature of life to the table through their creation by exploring various forms of media and materials.

Although the media, expressions and field of the artists are contrasting, observations and thoughts about daily lives and nature are their common muse. Alice Lin's paintings, blending wildlife, plants and human forms, employs surrealism to project the peaceful yet vacant reality in her eyes; Angel Hui combines daily necessities with traditional Chinese craft, as seen in her series【Embroidery on the plastic bag – Hong Kong Goldfish Street 2】, exhibited at Art Basel 2022; Bao, known for her freestyle work with mural, street art and illustrations, create fantastical scenes featuring human and animal characters that simultaneously reflect the daily life in our city; Gedvile Bunikyte uses colors, lines, and shapes as tools to capture her journey of personal transformation, inviting viewers to participate in a meditative experience; Morgan Wu explores social issues and the hidden symbols in nature through various media, materials and technology; XZOO studio (M&X) creates art furniture and sculptures that embodies a unique hybridity inspired by their deep understanding of culture and aesthetics from Eastern and Western life; Finally, Yu Xiao expands the boundaries of abstract painting and opens up viewing experiences by revealing the reality of life through her creative concept and emotional expression of “Underbelly”.

Despite their diverse styles and approaches, these artists share a common thread in their ability to capture the essence of their surroundings through their artistic creations. Each work symbolises the result of a breakthrough of self-consciousness, concepts and ideas are folded and expended repeatedly. Therefore, The Other Side is demonstrating the process of heterotopia to the public through different dimensions of life. Hoping the audience can jump out of the box, think in the other side, explore different possibilities in art expressions and life experience.

Snipe1: Metamaniaks at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

We are pleased to present METAMANIAKS, by Japanese artist Snipe1. The first of our international artists to visit Hong Kong after the covid. The artist will be presenting his fascinating graffiti paintings and sculptures.

A pioneer among Japanese graffiti writers, Snipe1 has been active since the dawn of Japan’s graffiti scene and later threw himself into the graffiti world of early 1990s New York during his teenage years. Snipe1’s graffiti draws upon the sensibility of street culture but incorporates an edge of “dirtiness” that lends to an unmistakable individual style. By pushing the boundaries, he continuously dares to toe the danger of breaking stereotypes.

In here, the artist aims to spark a conversation, to challenge people's thoughts, and to ultimately encourage them to question the reality we live in.

Global Children at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

Lucie Chang Fine Arts in Hong Kong, China, in collaboration with Galeria Cuatro in Valencia, Spain, present a group exhibition of Spanish New Wave artists ‘Global Children’ at Lucie Chang Fine Arts Hong Kong, China from 15th October until December 2022.

The group show will present over 20 works by Spanish artists David de Limón (1981), Julieta XLF (1982) and Jordi Machí (1983). It is the first time these artists will be shown in Asia, and is a turning point for the newly coined ‘Spanish New Wave’ movement in the region.

The exhibition aspires to exalt multiculturalism, credit globalisation and uncover social influences between the Spanish artists and Asian audiences. The fictional characters, and cartoons in their art are not accidental, they are an unequivocal result of Western artists being inspired by Asian expression. A sense of cultural curiosity for anime and manga subcultures comes through, making works from major cultural events like the Internet Age, ‘Kawaii’, Nintendo, and Super Mario. A fantastical sense and vibrant style create comparisons between the Spanish visual artists, meant to draw appreciation from adults and elderly, to children.

Lucie Chang Fine Arts is pleased to present - Tales of "Kowloon King" a solo exhibition of Tsang Tsou Choi (a.k.a King of Kowloon). In this solo exhibition, we will present a number of his unique and legendary pop culture works under the theme of "The King of Kowloon" for the audience to enjoy. Through the exhibition, we hope to share his lesser-known story and his cultural values. Tsang Tsou Choi (a.k.a "King of Kowloon") was born in Guangzhou in 1921, Tsang Tsou Choi traveled to Hong Kong as a poor, barely literate teenager. After discovering some important ancestral documents, Tsang claimed that the land of Kowloon belonged to his family, thereby adopting the title “King of Kowloon”.

Over the years, he has created his own graffiti-style calligraphy, using the Chinese traditional "Four Treasures of Study" (文房四寶) brush and ink to write on public objects such as walls, bridge piers, traffic light control boxes, and lamp posts in the cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong. Discussion Panel "The Graffiti World of Tsang Tsou Choi: Deconstruct and Restructure of Chinese Character" presented by Lucie Chang Fine Arts will explore how King of Kowloon and Hong Kong artist Mr. Chan Yuk Keung Kurt deconstruct and re-present traditional Chinese characters in an artistic way. Speakers include a retired professor of the Department of Fine Arts, CUHK Mr. Chan Yuk Keung Kurt, "King of Kowloon" Tsang Tsou Choi's collector and curator Mr. Chung Yin Chai, and the founder of Lucie Chang Fine Arts Ms. Chang Yue. We also invited the managing editor of CoBo Social Ms. Denise Tsui to be the moderator. The event will be held at Lucie Chang Fine Arts on May 21, 2022.

Liu Ke and Frank Vigneron at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

Liu Ke and Frank Vigneron at Lucie Chang Fine Arts

What is conceptual art? One of the points is: "Is there any question asked?"
"The Consciousness of Questions" is an important feature of conceptual art.
"Untitled" is a work that does not have an inscription that can be completed.
The problem of "untitled" has become a problem: the requirement of a title becomes a convention, but this title has little significance for good artwork, and either painting the lily or leading astray.
Therefore, untitled questions are better than titled questions; So let's call our exhibition "untitled questions".
- Liu Ke

The question of the title for abstract art has always been problematic. Whereas figurative painting generally presents to the eye something that can also be described with words, abstract art is not supposed to be perceived that way.
Although my own work was never conceived as part of this history of abstraction, it is, however, decidedly not figurative art and I decided, over 30 years ago, to stick to a single title for every one of my drawings: Le Songe Creux, which can be translated as something like ‘The Hollow Dream’ but also means, in French, someone who is always daydreaming and not doing anything constructive. I chose this general title to remind myself, ironically, that my own social and physical being has little to do with this endeavor, and, more importantly, because what exists in these lines is the pursuit of forms where the Chinese philosophical concept of the void is perpetually present.

Lucie Chang Fine Arts is happy to announce new solo exhibition by a Korean artist Eddie Kang.
Eddie Kang is an animamix artist that creates fictional space drawn from his memories and imaginations. Through symbolic icons, Kang reveals his perspective on urban society and expresses the lonesome emotions people feel amid busy crowds. Kang has a pessimistic outlook on the city life, but seeks to find positive meaning behind them. Preoccupied by technology and racing to get ahead in the capitalist economy, people are prone to lose their identities in the systematized modern culture. Kang’s robots are symbolic of the negative sides of a city. He sees tall skyscrapers as monsters and often pictures large buildings as robots whose entrances are mouths that swallow people. Through the negativities he sees in urban society, Kang expresses the positive notions that can be found behind them. Kang’s handmade doll attached on the canvas surface is a lonely bear aloof from the crowded chaos beneath, but it is also a true reflection of our hearts and life process. Pets and “happy cells” are other icons in his paintings that symbolize hope.
