Leo Gallery is thrilled to unveil Secret Garden, a solo project by Byoungho Kim curated by Woosuk Choi, which is cultivated using metallic modules, hinting at the foundational elements of sculptures. It explores geometric aesthetics that unfold within the orderly landscapes of civilised society. A garden is a human-scaled cosmos that humans can tame. Byoungho Kim refines overgrown forests into artificial gardens, indulging in the unique value of mechanical civilisation. The garden he refines serves as a metaphor for mechanical civilisation and a symbol of mass production.

Leo Gallery is honoured to present Olga Bläsi’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong on 16 January 2025, following her successful debut group exhibition, "Polyphonic Resonance", held at the unique premise of Chun Art Museum in collaboration with Leo Gallery Shanghai last year. The show will showcase Bläsi’s latest series of delicate installations and paperwork, seeking to establish a dialogue between the two mediums and aiming for a harmonious balance.

Bläsi’s artistic journey delves into the intricate interplay of materials, textures, and forms, examining how their interactions evoke sensations akin to skin and touch. Each piece she creates emerges as a response to its surroundings, reflecting a dynamic dialogue between various elements. During her stay in Hong Kong last year, Bläsi immersed herself in the local culture by visiting local fabric markets to draw inspiration and select materials that would play a key role in her new works. Her latest pieces reflect not only her artistic pursuits but also her engagement with themes of femininity, craftsmanship, and the human experience.

Cécile Lempert at Leo Gallery

Leo Gallery is pleased to present Cécile Lempert’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong on 28 November 2024, following her successful debut exhibition, “Der Albtraum der Bienenkönigin”, at our Shanghai space in May this year. The show will showcase the artist's latest series of paintings.

Lempert's work is deeply intertwined with her immediate surroundings, focusing on specific psychological states and nuanced interpersonal relationships. Drawing inspiration from her family photo archives, she weaves together different segments of pictorial histories. Rather than merely highlighting the pleasant aspects, Lempert is more intrigued by contradictions and ambiguities, aiming to capture the emotional integrity of the scenes. “By combining different visual narratives and isolating individual pictorial elements, new narratives unfold that shift or even dissolve temporal and geographical references.” Yet, these works retain a nostalgic ambiance.

Leo Gallery is thrilled to present Wu Jiannan’s first solo exhibition with us in Hong Kong on 19 Sept 2024. The exhibition will showcase the artist’s various series of sculptures and the development of his creative practice in a cross-cultural context.

Living and working in both the US and China, in recent years, Wu’s work has consisted mainly of two types: one involves the recreation and transformation of collective memory through public images, and the other represents feelings and perceptions formed from personal life experiences. The former is related to social contexts, where the events and scenes depicted in the works can be traced back through the dissemination of media images. The latter is fictional, resembling a dreamlike creation, with no public images as reference.

Noah Deledda & Yang Yang: CHILL or COOL at Leo Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Leo Gallery invites you to explore the creative worlds of two artists with different nationalities, whose works vary in medium but share the same state of being "chill or cool". "Chill" (pronounced HEA in Cantonese slang) means casualness and laziness today, but in the Jin and Tang dynasties, "chill" meant relaxed. Wang Xizhi, the Sage of Calligraphy, was a prime example of being "chill". The "Records of Famous Paintings of the Tang Dynasty" noted that Wei Yan's paintings had "elevated and leisurely thoughts". While the English word "cool" in the context of Cantonese means "stylish".

The two artists are respectively Yang Yang from Hangzhou in China and Noah Deledda from Florida in the US. Through their unique artistic languages and insights, they present a visually pleasing Happy Hour that blends rigidity and softness across cultures and regions. This allows everyone to appreciate meticulous artistic creations with a relaxed mindset during the scorching summer, temporarily escaping the harshness of reality and inspiring thoughts on the diversity and boundlessness of art.

Bian Qing: Awaiting at Leo Gallery

Leo Gallery is pleased to present Awaiting, Bian Qing’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. The show opens this Thursday on 6 June and runs through 11 July.

Bian’s latest body of work features a series of small scale still life paintings depicting everyday objects - from green bell peppers and apples to vases and candlestands. Within the compositions, the objects appear to float, making it challenging for viewers to determine their relative sizes and weights. This obscures the initially apparent information, inviting varied interpretations and prompting a sense of visual ambiguity.

Li Yiwen: The Moment at Leo Gallery

Leo Gallery is pleased to present “The Moment”, Li Yiwen’s second solo exhibition with us in Hong Kong. The exhibition showcases the artist's latest series of works of the same title, which he has created in recent years.

The exhibition title, "The Moment" is derived from the description of time span in Buddhism, "In the time it takes to snap one's fingers, there are sixty moments; in one moment, there are nine hundred births and deaths." The inspiration for this theme comes from the artist's awe of eternal time, which he experienced while standing in front of a massive iceberg during his journey in the northwest. It also reflects his melancholy perception of the rapid passage of time in social life. Li's artistic creation and paintings always revolve around his contemplation and interest in time and space. Experiences from memory and present moments accumulate as the sources of inspiration and expression.

Leo Gallery is delighted to present Brad Brown Solo Exhibition on view from 25 Jan to 15 Mar 2024. The exhibition features two of the most iconic series of abstract works from Brown's career, which represent an accumulation of time, his visual archives on canvas and paper, and his imagination that flows between brushstrokes and colours.

Brown began his series of works on paper, "The Look Stains", in 1987. Simultaneously, he embarked on a parallel journey with a collection of oil paintings on cradled panels known as "Piece", which commenced in 2001. Both projects have intentionally remained in an "unfinished" state ever since, liberating the artist from the confines of traditional notions of completion. No longer restricted by the dichotomy between the states of "completed" and the "incomplete", the artist's daily creations grow and thrive like plants with vitality. Like a comic strip or a slide show, the objects in each painting are connected in a splendid way and respond to each other.

Lei Ieng Wai and Liu Lu: P2P at Leo Gallery

Leo Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of “P2P”, a subsequent exhibition of the "P to P" series, which will showcase a dazzling display of lights and shadows at our gallery space in Hong Kong in early December. The exhibition features two aspiring artists, Lei Ieng Wai from Macau and Liu Lu from Hangzhou. In modern times like these, it is inevitable for us to escape the pervasive presence of light and pixels on our screens. The artificial colour spectrum is gradually approaching the vast wonders of nature. Both young artists draw inspiration from such environment. Their works strike a harmonious balance between strength and delicacy. Lei Ieng Wai combines plain lines with gentle colours, while Liu Lu skilfully employs rich hues across multiple spatial dimensions.

Armin Boehm at Leo Gallery

Join us in Armin Boehm's first solo at Leo Gallery Hong Kong and immerse yourself in his prismatic world, which transcends conventional boundaries through his collection of intricate layers and textures.

Once a student of renowned German artists Jörg Immendorff (1945-2007) and Konrad Klapheck (1935-2023), Boehm has an unyielding passion for using colours and elements to draw visible relationships across his compositions. Boehm weaves together multiple media, such as fragments of paint, fabric, paper and glass to captivatingly depict portraits and everyday objects.

Boehm’s chosen medium of oil and fabrics on canvas adds depth and texture to his compositions. The interplay between the luminous layers of oil paint and the carefully selected fabrics introduces a multi-dimensional quality to his pieces, resulting in visually stunning and tactile works of art.

Within each stroke and use of fabric, Boehm explores profound themes, from identities to memories, to the contrast between lights and shadows. It guides viewers through a realm of emotions and inviting new contemplation and introspection.

For Leo Gallery’s new space in Hong Kong, we launch “P to P”, a joint exhibition by Li Shun and Yao Peng, curated by Mok Wai Hong. The aim of this exhibition is to explore the reciprocal and ambiguous relationship between photography and painting through the works of these two artists.

Li and Yao originate from different backgrounds unlike one another. They both chose painting as their tool of expression, though their creative approaches differ. Li’s works include photography, digital calligraphy, drawing and painting to demonstrate his philosophical concepts. Yao uses collage and oil painting with the sense of photo imagery to narrate his stories.

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In this new exhibition, Leo Gallery showcases a series of small but significant art pieces including painting, sculpture and photography. Artists include Li Yiwen, Max Huckle, Wu Xihuang and Zhang Ning.

Li Yiwen (b. 1982, Henan, China)
Li avoids storytelling and does not wish his works become a sample of literature illustration. With his works, Li hopes to bring a new reading to the viewers through their own perceptions which are stimulated by colours, forms, space and textures triggering a series of emotional reactions.

Max Huckle (b. 1987, Heidelberg, Germany)
Max is looking for that one line that will stop the world. It is hasty, powerful and overwhelming but then there is that line, that stroke, that gesture which stops the time. Assembling and dissembling by adding more pieces together or magnifying smaller sections, Max plays very well with dimensions and patterns.

Wu Xihuang (b. 1981, Fujian, China)
Wu is interested in the unconventional visual language of human interactions and uses this as the foundation which taps into an interesting phenomenon, worths our discussion.

Zhang Ning (b. 1983, Shandong, China)
Viewers are encouraged to explore a diversified perspective in spaces and narrations through these small and subtle sculptures by Zhang Ning.

After the success of Liu Zhengyong's solo in our Shanghai space in May, Leo Gallery is delighted to present the artist's newest works in our Hong Kong branch this October.  This new series of works is the result of Liu's participation in the Artist-in-Residence Programme organised by Leo Gallery Shanghai. Over 20 works were created from July 2020 to May 2021.

Liu Zhengyong's works mainly involve painting and installation art. With heavy texture, vivid sense of colour and distorted images, Liu's works often based on real characters including celebrities, close friends and his self-portraits. Using body form as a clue, Liu discusses the current and past landscapes of human nature from the perspective of individuals. Through his works, Liu rethinks and reconstructs the deep logic behind the relationships between the reification of the body and the invisible time. Liu focuses on the process of creation instead of the pursuit of end results, with continuous emphasis on the discussion of painting and its form construction, as well as image and its spiritual core.

Patricia Waller: Guten Appetit! at Leo Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Leo Gallery is proud to present the debut Hong Kong solo exhibition of German artist, Patricia Waller. As a renowned knitwork master in Europe, Ms Waller is the first artist who uses crochet art to present avant-garde and modern cold humour in European art history.

Born with a German way of reflective mind, Ms Waller put forward a question in the early 1990s: can art get rid of the shackles of conventional techniques or machinery and return to handcrafts? At the time when virtual art is the main stream, should the value of manual work be regained? Ms Waller’s choice is crochet art, but she said: “To be honest, I don’t know even how to knit a pair of socks.” So what is she knitting? Humanity, she said. With different varieties of “humanities” knitted by her magical needle, she faces the inner abyss in a very gentle way. Her works are amused at first sight, bloody and cruel at the second, but also convincing when you look at it at the third glance. Her works have been collected by numbers of renowned collectors and museums in Europe.

Kai Chen: Supernova at Leo Gallery

Kai Chen’s abstract paintings and drawings explore ideas of color theory, abstraction and minimalism. Through laborious and meditative hatching marks or stippling, the layering of colors and the modeling of tones, Chen attempts to complicate the relationship between gestural mark-making and notions of masculinity as dictated by the mid-20th century Abstract Expressionists. His practice and distinct visual language aims to expand and transcend restrictive definitions of masculinity to include a broader expression and spiritual contemplation of the sublime.

Leo Gallery is proud to present – Eingedunkelt, the first Hong Kong solo exhibition of renowned German artist, Karl Horst Hödicke.

The show title takes its inspiration from a poem of the French poet, Paul Celan – “Eingedunkelt”, which translates to benighted, an absolute darkness. It is an ambiguous state between the night and dawn, containing countless possibilities. As one of the most significant contemporary German neo-expressionist, Hödicke paints with genuine emotions, in a wild and enthusiastic style. Having been through the turmoil in the ‘darkest moment’ of German politics, he concerned about the fate of the nation, as well as the joys and sorrows of the people. The pain, struggles, and hope that he has endured and expressed, echoed the destiny of mankind. It is undeniable that a new era has arrived.
