Matti Gao: My Art World Friends… at K11 Musea

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

This deeply personal exhibition reflects Gao’s decades-long artistic journey, offering a profound meditation on portraiture, human connection, and the role of painting in today’s fast-moving world.

This exhibition is a celebration of artistic perseverance, deep observation, and the enduring relevance of portraiture in an increasingly fragmented world. The exhibition also features an artistic exchange with renowned poet, writer, and calligrapher Feng Tang, who played a pivotal role in encouraging Gao to return to painting in 2023 after a period of artistic uncertainty. Their dialogue extends beyond friendship, exploring the parallels between Chinese calligraphy and Western painting, and examining how traditional and modern artistic practices intersect in a world often dominated by speed and distraction.

“My Art World Friends…” invites audiences to slow down, to engage, and to rediscover the beauty of focused attention.

The Descendants by WOAW Gallery at K11 Musea

WOAW Gallery is pleased to announce The Descendants, a group presentation of over 20 international artists and our sophomore return to K11 MUSEA, running from Saturday, 2 September through to Sunday, 17 September 2023. The exhibition is curated and organized by Melanie Lum, Micki Meng, and Kevin Poon, presented by WOAW Gallery in venue partnership with K11 MUSEA. Taking up the entire Kunsthalle of K11 Art & Cultural Centre, K11 MUSEA, The Descendants showcases a generation of pivotal artists who are at the forefront of guiding contemporary art from across the globe.

In the pursuit of reinvigorating once-classic forms of abstraction as well as experimenting with portraiture and landscape, each participating artist foregrounds artistic exploration in the particular histories and legacies of the art cosmopolitans they hail from and identities they inhabit. The new vanguard of contemporary art binds itself to visions of diaspora, racial and gender dynamics, sexuality, and the untrammelled participation of art that moves these narratives forward.

City As Studio at K11 MUSEA

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Curated by Jeffrey Deitch, City As Studio, China’s first major exhibition of graffiti and street art opens at this Spring. Running from 20 March to 14 May 2023 to coincide with Art Basel Hong Kong, the monumental exhibition will feature over 100 works by more than 30 artists, showcasing the breadth and depth of the graffiti and street art scene across generations, styles and geographies.

City As Studio traces the global history of graffiti and street art from its emergence in the subway yards and parking lots of 1970s New York to its rise as a worldwide phenomenon. It begins with the movement’s pivotal innovators such as Fab 5 Freddy, FUTURA and Jean-Michel Basquiat who were part of the dialogue and the Downtown art scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and goes on to highlight artists such as Barry McGee, Mister Cartoon and OSGEMEOS, and the groundbreaking styles they created in San Francisco, East Los Angeles and São Paulo. The exhibition also documents the emergence and evolution of artists such as KAWS and AIKO who represent a younger generation of New York street artists.

Highlights include Basquiat’s Valentine (1984), on loan from the personal collection of Paige Powell, alongside works by other seminal artists such as The Bomb (1983) by CRASH and Untitled (1983), a spray painting by Keith Haring spanning three metres. Portraits such as Keith Haring (Red) (2010) andBasquiat (Red) (2010) by Shepard Fairey demonstrate how early practitioners of the genre continue to inspire younger artists, while FUTURA’s work El Diablo (1985) - part of KAWS’ personal collection - exemplifies the intergenerational dialogue and influence between street artists working today. JR’s work Eye Contact #13 (2018) evokes old school rail yards as model trains on tiny tracks move back and forth, creating an optical illusion on each run.  Examining how the movement shaped other genres, the exhibition will also display works such as Charlie Ahearn’s film Juanito, which captures the story of his twin, sculptor John Ahearn making casts of people in Bronx and immortalising them in plaster. Elsewhere, works by AIKO and Lady Pink will explore how female artists responded and contributed to a genre traditionally dominated by men.

Michael Lau: Splendid Park at K11 Musea

Michael Lau: Splendid Park at K11 Musea

K11 MUSEA is delighted to present this year’s first art exhibition – SPLENDID PARK by Hong Kong contemporary artist and “Godfather of Designer Toys” Michael Lau. This would be Lau’s debut institutional exhibition of nearly 40 artworks including paintings and sculptures created from 2011–2022, featuring iconic series in the artist's oeuvre including Gardener, Package Change, First Encounter, Soliloquy, Master, Flower,  and Portrait. The exhibition opens on February 11 in celebration of the revitalization of Hong  Kong art scene as well as the welcoming of Spring, which simultaneously reinforces the artist’s main concept for this exhibition — “The true beauty of spring always finds its way to thrive beyond the fences” .

Creator of Gardener, an avant-garde figurine series in the 1990s that established a collective scene of Hong Kong street culture, Lau played a pivotal role in leading the global upsurge of collectible designer toys. In the past two decades, he has never ceased documenting pop culture through his art while in recent years, Lau re-visited paintings, the genre rooted in his earlier artistic training for his latest practice, enriching the visual library of contemporary art and bestowing Gardener—the utopia of youth, friendship and fantasy—a more contemporary context. Lau’s evolving practice boldly and precisely fused his formative practice, personal life experiences, and positive state of mind. Comprised of scattered yet consistent visual symbols, an aesthetic that hovers between abstraction and figuration, playful and surreal deconstruction, appropriation and juxtapositions of art historical masterpieces, Lau beckons the audiences to a retrospect of his artistic journey starting from Gardener in 1999, through his epiphanies from In  the  Garden,  and  eventually  reaching  the  extensive,  all-encompassing  wonderland: SPLENDID PARK. The exhibition retains Lau’s commitment to community and integrates his reflections on art and today’s world. It’s not only a timely review of Lau’s oeuvre, but also a sincere invitation for audiences to immerse deep into the artist’s creative world.

Pearl Lam Galleries is pleased to present Ren Ri: Yuansu, a pop-up exhibition of unique beeswax sculptures by Beijing-based artist Ren Ri at K11 MUSEA. Ren Ri (b. 1984) works in the unique medium of beeswax, creating, in collaboration with the insects, mesmerizing sculptures that document his intimate experience with bees as both an artist and a beekeeper. He manipulates the movement of bees and the formation of honeycombs to create metaphysical and hybrid sculptures, which investigate the force of nature and consequences of human intervention.

On view are two distinctive series of artworks: Yuansu I: The Origin of Geometry (2007), which incorporates maps into the make-up of the beeswax, and Yuansu II, in which Ren has created a series of stunning geometrical sculptures by manipulating bee behaviour. Ren places a queen bee in the middle of a box, while the worker bees start to build natural beehives around her. Every seven days, Ren randomly changes the position of the box, like rolling dice, to create a living object.
