Happy 90th Birthday Uncle Chu! at Hanart TZ Gallery

Happy 90th Birthday Uncle Chu! at Hanart TZ Gallery

To celebrate CHU Hing Wah’s 90th birthday, Hanart TZ Gallery will present Master CHU’s retrospective exhibition, featuring over 60 works spanning the 1960s to 2024, including both recent paintings and works held privately over the years. The exhibition presents a pictorial review of the artist’s long career marked by empathy and compassion, and his dedication to both the care of his fellows and of his own soul.

Although deeply interested in painting in his youth, CHU Hing Wah chose to train as a psychiatric nurse. From this time on, his professional career and his art-making developed side by side. CHU’s style and technique are moulded by the innocent directness of a naked soul, long exposed to the care of fragile mental patients. At its core, his art is a celebration of human sympathy. Over his long painting career CHU has mainly cast his eyes on the daily life of urban Hong Kong, but the emotional tenor of his works is free of any sense of crass urbanity. With his keen sensitivity to the vulnerability of the human psyche, CHUunderstands that the true pleasure of ordinary life is still found in the bonds of community and family. These are the strengths that enable us to withstand the corrosive quality of this commercialised age. They are the starting points from which we form a bond with our world.

Opening reception on 11 January. Speech by Dr. FAN Tak Wing 2:30pm, Cantonese Opera by CHU Hing Wah 3pm.

Hanart TZ Gallery is proud to present AU Hoi Lam’s new solo exhibition Painting, Its Reasons to Be. The opening reception will take place at Hanart TZ Gallery on October 19, 2024 (Saturday), from 2 to 6 pm, in the presence of the artist. AU Hoi Lam views the creation of art as a method of “Care of the Self”. She equally uses the language of painting and self-writing as vehicles to change and ultimately to transform herself. Her contemplations on life and her commitment to craftsmanship are all integrated into her art. From the brewing of an idea, to stretching the canvas, mixing the paints, and making and installing the work, for AU the entire creative process is a means of exercise and ascesis of the self. It is a process of retrospection, contemplation, remembrance, oblivion; of otium, vigilance, prayer, relaxation; of soothing and cultivation.

He was among the last class of students at the Guangzhou Municipal Junior Art College under the directorship of the illustrious ink painter Gao Jianfu. In 1949, Yeh and a few classmates planned an art expedition to the famous Dunhuang Grottoes, but they were frustrated in the effort due to China’s civil war, which prompted them to redirect their journey to Taiwan instead; but here Yeh was caught up with the retreat of the National Republic government, and spent the rest of his life in Taiwan.

The Theater of Mimicry at Hanart TZ Gallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

This summer Hanart TZ Gallery is proud to play host to two special exhibitions by emerging curators whose outstanding curatorial project proposals were selected by the new “ECP: Stars Emerging Curator Project.” Co-organized by Hangzhou Central Art Museum, China Academy of Art, and China Resources Mixc Lifestyle, the ECP-Star Curatorial Program aims to discover and support young curators and artists demonstrating a highly innovative spirit and unique vision. In July Hanart presented the first project of the series. The second winning project is The Theater of Mimicry, co-curated by Dan YANG and Celine Xi CHEN, set to open at Hanart TZ Gallery on 10 August.

The Theater of Mimicry brings together nine artists/artist groups who, working within the three main thematic contexts of “environmental mimicry”, “cultural mimicry” and “digital mimicry,” together construct a complex, interwoven mimetic world, inviting the audience in to engage with a multi-layered sensory and ideological experiential field. Through this field, the exhibition aims to reveal the complex interweaving and dynamic equilibrium between the real and the virtual, the natural and the artificial, and the private and the public that exist within contemporary society; and in so doing to inspire each viewer to re-examine their individual experience in the world so as to discover deeper truths hidden behind mimicry and appearances.

The opening reception of The Theater of Mimicry will take place at Hanart TZ Gallery, Hong Kong, on Saturday, August 10th from 2 to 6 pm, in the presence of the curators, participating artists, and special guest Wang Yan, Director of the National Art Museum of China and professor at the China Academy of Art, who will engage in conversation and interaction with the audience.

The Great Manual of (Post) Human Anatomy at Hanart TZ Gallery

Starting from July 2024, Hanart TZ Gallery will present two consecutive exhibitions, curated by the awardees from the “ECP: Stars Emerging Curator Project”. Initiated by the China Academy of Art, Central Art Museum (Hangzhou) and China Resources Mixc Lifestyle, this programme is committed to providing young curators and artists platforms and support.

The Great Manual of (Post) Human Anatomy, one of the awarded proposals of the “ECP: Stars Emerging Curator Project”, is co-curated by Dia YU and Abby CHEN. Featuring 14 artists, the exhibition explores the "infection", "fusion" and "transformation" of the body that results from its interaction with different entities: whether mechanical and technological phenomena or other living beings in the natural ecology. The explorations give rise to questions relating to the ethics of science and technology, the complex interfaces between the fleshly body and the machine, and the relationship between humans and the species that they classify as “the other”.

The opening reception will take place on 13th July 2024 (Saturday) 2-6pm, with the presence of the curators, participating artists, and Yan WANG (Director of Central Art Museum and China Academy of Art).

Luis Chan: Hong Kong Magic at Hanart TZ Gallery

Luis Chan: Hong Kong Magic at Hanart TZ Gallery

In 1957 when Luis Chan ventured off to explore the pictorial worlds that existed outside the Hong Kong sceneries he was famous for, he definitely did not know how far he had to go before finding shore.

But Luis Chan was well prepared. From his first formal training course in 1927, and his First Prize award from the Hong Kong Art Club in 1934, by 1957 Luis Chan had already presented 14 solo exhibitions and published over a hundred articles on art. The hundreds of Hong Kong sceneries he had painted by then is evidence of how enamoured he was by the views of Hong Kong and the city life enveloping him. This enamoured engagement presents a sense of reality and belonging not often found in pictorial representations, and it anchored the artist’s experimentations till his last.

Professor Jack Lee, eminent historian of Hong Kong art, has recently published a concise anthology of his essays and research on Luis Chan. His anthology will be presented at the exhibition, and Prof Lee will give a talk about his research on 25 May 2024.

Emily Cheng: Opening of the Egg at Hanart TZ Gallery

Hanart TZ Gallery is honoured to present “Opening of the Egg”, a solo exhibition by Emily Cheng. In conjunction with the highlight display at our Art Basel Hong Kong (Booth 3D16), over 30 pieces of her work will be on view this Art Month. Emily Cheng’s art is a portrait gallery of the Soul in its multifarious manifestations. Each painting is a separate incarnation, inheriting a memory cultivated by its own special cross-pollination of cultural traditions. The richness of imagery her art delivers is itself a feast for the eye, and the pleasure they stir in art lovers directs them to other moments of delight, as they recognize figurative details from the global world of art.

Responding to the energy and emotional nuances of Emily’s paintings, Composer-performer Kung Chi-Shing will perform his soundscape with violin, flute and electronics at the opening reception.

The opening reception, in the presence of the artist, will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2024, from 2 to 6pm.

Lu Dadong: Modest Monuments at Hanart TZ Gallery

Lu Dadong: Modest Monuments at Hanart TZ Gallery

Lu Dadong’s art is driven by rebelliousness and playfulness. For him, inspiration can be found everywhere; daily life is creative life. His tools are borrowed from the history of calligraphy, and his outlook on calligraphic history is turned into text installations. Lu Dadong absorbs the classical tradition, subverts tradition, and re-enters tradition. Through Dadong, calligraphy is being re-made as “contemporary”.

Taoist calligraphy is one of Lu Dadong’s favourite resources. The Taoist’s worship of words is reflected in the diverse forms of magic writing used in rituals. Wang Xizhi and his son Wang Xianzhi (4th CE), revered as Sages of calligraphy, believed in the “Way of the Celestial Master”, and their activities often related closely to Taoism. Their Taoist-inspired calligraphy established the main writing styles for nearly two thousand years, these include the styles of regular script, running script and cursive script.

Wang Dongling: Entangled Energies at Hanart TZ Gallery

Hanart TZ Gallery is honoured to announce the opening of “ENTANGLED ENERGIES”, a solo exhibition of works by eminent calligraphy master Wang Dongling, on Saturday, 23 September 2023.

The exhibition features a range of Wang Dongling’s latest works, including a monumental “Entangled Script”, 2 Tea Poems by Su Shi, measuring 5 meters long. “Entangled Script” is the culmination of Wang Dongling’s lifelong pursuit of an art that is both universal and Chinese, forward-looking, and firmly grounded in the past.

Another highlight of the exhibition is a set of calligraphies written on transparent coloured acrylic. Through interaction with the lighting of the space, the rhythm and momentum of the calligraphy are transformed into an encompassing realm of aesthetics, allowing the audience to experience the tension inherent in the "Entangled" calligraphy as an impact in public space.

In collaboration with media artist Jeffrey Shaw, the exhibition includes a special feature of two video installations. The videos capture Wang Dongling’s writing process, and translate the dance of the writing brush into a ritual performance.

Christian Schwarzwald and Kurt Chan: To Paint the Written World at Hanart TZ

Hanart TZ Gallery is pleased to present “To Paint the Written World”, duo exhibition of Christian Schwarzwald and Kurt Chan, opening on 8 July 2023 (Saturday), 2–6 pm.

‘Word’ is the carnal flesh of ‘Idea’; and like any carnal existence, it begets ideas of its own.

‘Word’ is the idea of things, events, desires—of all that exists and that is yet non-existing; it puts everything in place, and a World appears. Human ideas arise out of word realities. It is all wonderfully delirious, and wonderfully delicious.

The paintings of Christian Schwarzwald and Kurt Chan take the flesh of the word, its visual aspect, as the subject of their playful imagination. They are both interested in how the written word evokes particular realities; and how, as a graphic form, it inadvertently spills over into channels of unintended meanings and visions. With the two artists coming together in one exhibition, their separate languages allow us to see with multiple pairs of eyes.

BOLOHO: BOLOHOPE at Hanart TZ Gallery

Hanart TZ Gallery is pleased to present the experimental Guangzhou art collective BOLOHO, and their latest project BOLOHOPE (in collaboration with “Reading Room”), as featured in Documenta fifteen, and also introduce their new body of work.

BOLOHO will transform Hanart’s gallery space into a living room and Hong Kong-style cafe (cha chaan teng 茶餐廳), with an environment built from collectively produced paintings, texts, sewing, installation, and even a series of mini-sitcoms.

In its bright and cleverly managed chaos, BOLOHOPE reflects the cultural imagination of this generation of Guangzhou youth, which is interwoven with the memory of Hong Kong media and urban culture of the 2000s—the result of an early open policy between China and Hong Kong which privileged Guangdong before the opening of the rest of China.

Cheng Tsai-Tung and Chen Heng at Hanart TZ Gallery

Cheng Tsai-Tung and Chen Heng at Hanart TZ Gallery

Hanart TZ Gallery is pleased to present the duo exhibition of Cheng Tsai-Tung and Chen Heng, opening on 17 December 2022. The exhibition features new paintings from the last few years, displayed against selected examples of earlier works.

In recent years, Cheng Tsai-Tung has increasingly shifted to a state of solitude in which his interlocutors remain the ancients alone. Through classical poetry, he has slowly found ways to crystallize these complex sentiments into a faint melancholy. He condenses his personal tales and sensibility into the mise-en-scène of colourful moonlight, and at the same time morphs himself into a sentient being within the stream of history.

Cheng Tsai-Tung’s contemplative anxiety about the passing of time, and the fragility and preciousness of life drive him on the path of creation. His pursuit of archaic style is a testament to his many years of research travels around China. Although Cheng Tsai-Tung refuses the traditional paths of ink painting, his persistent search for the archaic spirit has opened a personal approach. In these paintings, we can see his engaged interest in ink and brush, his relish in the charm of awkwardness and playfulness, as well as the inner reserve of his personality that flashes out of the silence.

Chen Heng emphasizes “realization” and “transcendence” in his art. In four decades of artistic journey, he has continuously sought to sublimate his representational skills and to refine images to seek the cultural meaning of imagery. He deconstructs the ingredients of oil painting to seek aesthetics that suit a Chinese context. This includes his interpretation of the ‘negative’ space of ink painting (the ‘blank’ liubai) as an extra-visual context and highlighting visual scenes as mental ‘events’ and ‘things’.

Chu Hing-wah: Bare Life at Hanart TZ

Hanart Tz is proud to present a solo exhibition of Chu Hing-wah, ‘Bare Life’ that will open on 10 September. The exhibition will showcase the latest paintings. Artist will be present.

Chu Hing Wah’s life story is neither dramatic nor extraordinary: rather, it is a story of ‘ordinary happiness’. For Chu Hing Wah, the way to happiness lies in finding contentment in the everyday, and in his own life he has mastered this principle. He is content with his lot in life, accepts things as they come, finds satisfaction in fulfilling his responsibilities, practices self-acceptance, and cherishes both people and things. Chu believes that the turns of fortune in his own life were gifts bestowed by heaven: winning a scholarship to study nursing in England, having the leisure time to discover the artistic riches of London’s museums, going on to a fulfilling career working in psychiatric hospitals, practicing art and becoming part of a lively circle of artistic friends, meeting fellow aficionados who share a love of Cantonese opera—for all of these things, Chu Hing Wah maintains a sense of fulfilment and gratitude. He values every experience, cares about every friend, respects others’ points of view, and appreciates every experience. In this way, Chu Hing Wah basks in the elements of quotidian life.

At Hanart TZ Gallery, another magic show by Jeffrey Shaw and Sarah Kenderdine is on view from August 21, 2021. This time they are not reviving eras past, instead, they are taking us to 33 contemporary destinations across the Asia continent that have survived the ravages of history, and at each point to deliver some of the perennial wisdom of the Lord Buddha. From the Indian subcontinent, maritime Buddhism started to cross the oceans over two millennia ago, and through the wizardry of the artists these 33 still-thriving sites reside in virtual spaces beneath decorated discs glued to the gallery floor, bringing testimony to the resilience of spiritual devotion.

Exhibition by Cai Jin at Hanart Square

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Cai Jin is a Chinese painter best known for her oil paintings of the banana plant. Cai was born in Tunxi, Anhui Province, China in 1965.

Cai Jin was inspired by a wilting banana plant that she discovered on a visit to her hometown in China. She took two rolls of photographs of the plant growing among weeds, and carried them with her for inspiration. Jin has completed more than 400 works, mostly oil paintings. Her work is characterized by its psychedelic colors, such as pink, purple, blue, and especially red. Jin uses the image of the banana plant in her work to explore beauty, fertility, and sexuality. While she has primarily produced oils on canvas, Cai has painted on such materials as mattresses, silk quilts, cushions, women’s shoes, bicycle seats, and bath tubs. Her paintings explore vitality and beauty.

In 2008, Cai deviated from her focus on the banana plant and began work on a series of landscape paintings. While the title of the series is Landscape the paintings are organic abstractions, which show influences of both Western and traditional Chinese sources.
