Crossing at gdm Hong Kong (Galerie du Monde)

gdm Hong Kong is delighted to present Crossing, a group exhibition curated by independent curator Chris Wan, opening on January 9 2025. Featuring new works by nine artists—Au Wah Yan, Sushan Chan, Lilin, Law Yuk Mui, Sharon Lee, Joseph Leung, Andrew Luk, Ivy Ma, and Michelle Tam—the exhibition explores the emotional intersections of Hong Kong’s history through diverse perspectives, highlighting the deep connections between individuals and their times.

Building on the curator’s research into Chinese diasporic experiences, Crossing captures a moment in Hong Kong’s present. History’s ripples unfold within everyday life, as people’s displacement, connections, and separations mirror the uncertainty of crossing uncharted waters. This challenging journey also holds immense potential for self-creation and renewal.

The participating artists, from Hong Kong and beyond, respond to pivotal moments in their personal lives through their work, reflecting on the pressing question: “How do we navigate this turbulent time?” The artworks blend imaginative and conceptual ideas with sincere and direct expressions, delineating a heartfelt letter to the city of Hong Kong.

Opening reception: 9 January (Thu) 5-7pm

Tang Kwong San: Rootstock at Galerie du Monde (gdm)

gdm Hong Kong proudly presents Tang Kwong San: Rootstock from 12 September to 9 November 2024, the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Using the bauhinia plant as the main motif, Rootstock approaches diasporic identity like a sterile plant that is grafted from intergenerational histories. Through graphite drawings, oil paintings, handmade objects, photography, and installation, Tang’s new work navigates between deconstruction and reconstruction, examining how the tissues of our identities are splintered and joined.

Through found objects and transposed plants, Rootstock examines the familial, social, and historical fragments that forge one’s identity. In the echoes of Tang’s destruction and under his painstaking documentation, these fragments are rejoined in a sublimation of grief and ultimately, hope.

gdm presents Liu Sheng’s solo exhibition “Potato Man’s Quest” curated by Li Yao. Artist Liu Sheng unveils the social realities he discovered as a potato farmer through a new series of evocative oil on canvas works.

Born in 1971, Liu Sheng experienced China’s industrial revolution and the drastic social transformations of rapid urbanization. As the first university graduate and breadwinner of the family, Liu took on jobs in design and manufacturing to lift his family out of poverty.

A migrant worker was Liu Sheng’s identity for two decades, but he never stopped questioning the boundary of art and society. In 2014, he no longer wanted to be a mere observer and started documenting his daily encounters. The art of Liu Sheng is familiar and straightforward.

On 15 June at 3 PM, gdm will host a Conversation featuring artist Liu Sheng, his university professor - artist Xu Tan, artist Duan Jianyu, observer and researcher of Liu Sheng - Liang Jianhua, and exhibition curator Li Yao, delving into Liu Sheng’s recent practice and the ecology of art in the Pearl River Delta.

Zheng Chongbin: Immeasurable Things at Galerie du Monde

In March 2024, Galerie du Monde will transform the gallery space into a ceaseless agential world with artist Zheng Chongbin’s intricate and luminescent light installation “Immeasurable things – life flows within and without you”.

A resident of the SF Bay Area for over three decades, Zheng is inspired by the California light and space movement, and the region’s rich ecologies. Maintaining his commitment to painting, Zheng has extended his conceptual explorations into the media of installation and video. Zheng explores processes of nature – from molecular and cellular to topographical and climatic – in the scale of human perception through microscopic and macroscopic imagery, unfolding these processes spatially and temporally.

“Immeasurable things – life flows within and without you” (2024) is a monumental light space installation created with layered video projection, aluminum, scrim, screen, vinyl sheet, glass, and LED lighting. The installation showcases an intertwined and destabilized space, where the boundaries between human, technology and the environment blur. Time is stretched, erasing the distinctions between past, present and future – they coexist as one.

Kurt Chan: Old Landscape: Lightning, Water and Rocks at Galerie du Monde

The original meaning of "old landscape" is the landscape of the Earth before mankind came into existence, or even shortly after the birth of life.

It is said that life on Earth began in a "primordial soup" of water, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, minerals and electricity; water was the medium, the minerals were the materials, and the electricity was the catalyst - the Earth was once a kitchen, where life was created from a heated mixture of gases and elements electrified.

It's interesting to think of landscapes in scientific terms. The rocks are the minerals, the water is the mediator, and the electricity is the tree.

This assumption is at the core of my series of works, which is inspired by my love for Chinese landscape painting, but I also feel that its inherited format is inadequate for contemporary artistic expression, which unexpectedly pushes me to experiment with different mediums and concepts.

Guanyu Xu: Duration of Stay at Galerie du Monde

Guanyu Xu: Duration of Stay at Galerie du Monde

Galerie du Monde is delighted to announce Guanyu Xu’s “Duration of Stay”, which marks the Chicago-based Chinese artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Influenced by the production of ideology in American visual culture and a conservative familial upbringing in China, Xu’s practice extends from examining the production of power in photography and collage, to the question of personal freedom and its relationship to political regimes.

Fractured identity and forms of belonging are central to the artist’s practice and integral to all aspects of the work in the exhibition. Juxtaposing landscapes with an intimate view of personal spaces, the power of Xu’s imagination is founded upon the negotiation and reinterpretation of images over time, making space for multiplicity and growth.

"Duration of Stay" features Xu’s work from multiple series, including his long-term project Resident Aliens that addresses the idea of citizenship and form of belonging; his new Traversable Landscape series which reveals the border regime as a space inherently perpetuating imperialism, xenophobia and racism; a 144-part installation titled Suspension which expresses the artist's powerlessness as an alien in the US during the pandemic and the suspended experience of the deadlock created by political powers; and a video work Complex Formation, where Xu questions the visual hegemony that perpetuated his mother's vision and her influence over him.

Opening reception with artist's attendance: 7 June 2023, 5pm to 7pm

Crystal Liu: You Gave me Everything at Galerie du Monde

Galerie du Monde presents “you gave me everything”, an exhibition of recent works by Canadian-Chinese artist Crystal Liu, on view from 26 April through 3 June 2023 in Hong Kong. This is Liu’s third exhibition with the gallery.

Through her distinct visual language and personal narrative, Liu uses landscape as a metaphor for the intangible forces that drive human beings from within. She draws inspirations from her daily life experiences, her relationships, and her curiosity of the beauty and complexities of nature and human emotions as raw material for her artistic practice.

After the sudden loss of her father at the beginning of the pandemic, Liu went on many long walks in nature to find comfort. Flowers in particular helped her heal and be more hopeful. The painting series “our place” was developed during this period with the intention to create a dream garden for her and her father to meet again.

Galerie du Monde is thrilled to present group exhibition "Lost in Translation" curated by Anqi Li from 15 March to 22 April 2023.

"Lost in Translation" narrates the ambiguity as creative intentions, visual languages, and verbal interpretation are translated from one to the other. It is an unspeakable sense of struggling or losing control, yet a reserved pause to read between the lines. This constructs a subtle lostness in a series of recent works by eight Chinese artists. The group show wonders in between abstraction and figuration, obscurity and clarity, reality and fantasy, tranquility and lamentation, inviting the spectator to immerse into the eternal fluidity of artistic languages.

Adia Millett: You Will Be Remembered at Galerie du Monde

Adia Millett (b. 1975, United States) is acclaimed for her deep exploration of basic configurations, diverse expressive practices, and experimentation with mediums. Trained in the fine arts, art history, and the postmodernist theories of cultural studies, Millett conveys her felt concerns in the discourses of the domestic, the public sphere, gender positions, and spirituality through the interdependent form and content of the abstract compositions of her works.

The paintings presented in “You Will Be Remembered.” project the power of mid-twentieth century jazz recordings (and music inspired by them) into the future. Millett listened to the selected music over days and weeks, and she read the thoughtful writings about them. Subsequently, she created a body of buoyant abstract paintings which fully participate in the encounter between jazz and writing inspired by it. In effect, Millett hosted a listening party across time and space.

Curated by Jacqueline Francis.

Retrograde at Galerie du Monde

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Galerie du Monde is delighted to present the group exhibition Retrograde curated by Cusson Cheng. Different from other LGBTQ-themed exhibitions that emphasize the pride and visibility of sexual minorities, Retrograde raises questions on the costs of the contemporary move to the mainstream in lesbian and gay culture. The exhibition contests the dominant heteronormative logic of desire, the homogeneous models of gay modern identities, and proposes alternative ways of thinking that allow one to radically reimagine queer histories, subjectivities, and futures. The curator invites eleven local and international contemporary artists who come from eight nationalities and currently reside in seven countries to participate in the exhibition, with more than half debuting in Asia.

Inspired by astrology, the exhibition title references the retrograde motion of planets which represents an exception or even a challenge to the sense of normalcy. Such planets depart from the main highway altogether — they are seekers or explorers who travel the celestial byways in search of something not available on the main highway. Similarly, the participating artists identify and comprehend the underlying concerns of queer modernity, envision queer subjectivities beyond the grand narrative, and regard ‘queer’ as a melting pot of poststructural, postmodern, postcolonial, and ‘postpatriarchal’ methodologies to truly ‘queer’ the queer.

Wang Gongyi at Galerie du Monde

Galerie du Monde is thrilled to present Wang Gongyi's third solo exhibition in Hong Kong from April to June 2022, debuting her new body of paintings captivating the beauty of Lake Tahoe and her memories of Hangzhou's West Lake.

Wang Gongyi graduated in 1962 from the Affiliated High School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She joined the Tianjin People’s Fine Arts Publishing House as an editor in 1973. In 1978, she entered the Printmaking Department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Fine Arts), and after receiving her degree there she remained as a teacher. In 1980, Wang was awarded the grand prize for her “Qiu Jin” series of woodcut prints at the “Second National Youth Art Exhibition”. In the early 80s, Wang was already well known in the contemporary art circle in China through her woodcut series “Qiu Jin”, this work called for social reforms and represented the passion of a new generation. It has become an important work in the historical narrative of contemporary Chinese art. In 1986, Wang was invited by the French Ministry of Culture to study art in France. After periods as artist-in-residence at the Museum of Oregon State University and the Pacific Northwest College of Art, she moved permanently to the US in 2001 and is now based in Portland. Since 2005, Wang broke free and returned to nature – she started her signature Winsor Blue landscape series and abstract ink experimentations.
