Wu Didi: Extra/Ordinary at Contemporary by Angela Li

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Contemporary by Angela Li is proud to present a solo exhibition of Beijing-based artist Wu Didi, “extra/ordinary.” Wu’s works explore the quiet abundance of nature, revealing the extraordinary within the ordinary and inspiring viewers to reflect on themselves and our relations to the environment around us, with the artist present.

Contemporary society is saturated with endless information, ideologies, and material desires, often leaving people feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once observed that human desire is insatiable; the fleeting pleasure of fulfilment fades quickly, compelling us to constantly seek more. Amidst this relentless pursuit, Wu’s minimalist oil paintings stand out for their ingenuity and simplicity. Combining the essence of Western abstraction with Chinese literati paintings, she appropriates natural elements embedded in cultural consciousness. Bamboo twists and contorts without severing; moss grows on rocks, forming self-contained microcosms; birds weave through intricate spiderwebs—each transcending its inherent natural state. Through deconstruction, refinement and reconstruction, these familiar elements are transformed into unexpected forms on the canvas, expanding our perception of the ordinary nature.

Contemporary by Angela Li is proud to present solo exhibition of Cheung Tsz Hin, "moments in layered motion", featuring his recent works created in the last year. Cheung's paintings breathe life into a range of subjects drawn from everyday exitence, such as plants, children, and pillows. Each subject is meticulously crafted, reflecting the artist's accumulated sensations and thoughts. According to Cheung, his artwork focuses the energy on diverse emotions from the inner states of mind.

Cheung Tsz Hin's instinctive and sensory-driven approach to colour captures floating light and plundering shadows. He adeptly captures the evanescent beauty of everyday moments that often arise and vanish quickly. The interplay of colours and lines is iconic in Cheung's style, and the portrayal of light and shadow reflects his personal touch. These elements display his unique perceptions and experiences. Cheung's use of colors and his skillful capture of sunlight demonstrates his sensitivity to the ephemeral beauty of nature. Guided by nimble strokes, these elements flow with fluidity, appearing as spirited lines and mellowing colours—like fleeting snapshots of moments from the artist's life.

Cheung Tsz Hin: shivering glow, I shiver and glow at Contemporary by Angela Li

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Contemporary by Angela Li is proud to present the solo exhibition of Cheung Tsz Hin shivering glow, I shiver and glow, featuring his recent works created in the last year. Through the lens of the artist, layers of feelings embedded within plants and seeds unravel and rise upon the surface when exposed to the warmth of sunlight, flourishing onto his canvases. The exhibition opening will be held on Thursday 18 May, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and will remain on view until 24 June, 2023. The artist will be present during the opening.

Growing up in the New Territories, Cheung lived within a rural restricted area in Hong Kong near the border with the mainland. He spent most of his childhood in the greenery of nature, away from the typical urban life. Surrounded by the woods, he was always alone and enjoyed observing the movements of trees as well as taking care of his plants at home. As Cheung’s artistic career began to take off in recent years, so did his ways of living. From a primitive, leaky rooftop studio to a relatively proper place where he currently works  in Fotan, the drastic changes in lifestyle has resulted in moments of melancholia, thus Cheung expressed through episodes of exploration between light and shadow, echoing his innermost feelings. They are then depicted through the laxness yet predominate arrangements of colours which help to strengthen the viewer’s visual experience.

Kwong Man Chun: Moonlit Dancing at Contemporary by Angela Li

Love is in the air, it makes the mortal world more attractive than the eternity of heaven. Kwong is inspired greatly by his daily life, especially the warmth from his family. The wooden dividers inside Tong Lau 唐樓(tenement buildings) are the memories of his childhood. The interlace of nostalgia memories and contemporary atmosphere, crochet a time traveling journey between ancient China and modern Hong Kong. The exhibited artworks include the tree in his homeland, Huang Cen Ling (黄岑嶺) , a village by the lake in Hunan province; the herbal tea that his sister brew for him; an aerolite that floats in Tong Lau; the mirage of Eileen Chang (張愛玲),a legendary female Chinese author, etc. His paintings will lead you to search between the reality and an surrealist world.

Plum blossom, pavilion, stone, and lake are the essential elements in Kwong’s painting, the forms of them represent his inner state during his creations. By observing motion through stillness, his works show the interaction between human and nature. He uses the eternity of stone, in contrast to the constant changing of water flow. Walking through the mystery mist created by Kwong Man Chun, you will be immersed into the emotional boundless cosmos.

Tang Kwong San: Midnight Sun at Contemporary by Angela Li

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Contemporary by Angela Li is proud to present Midnight Sun, solo exhibition of Hong Kong artist Tang Kwong San, curated by Jims Lam. Tang often deploys flash photography at night as part of his creative process. To him, exposing light on mundane objects that can be found along streets, such as trees and small creatures, is a means of isolating subject matter from the darkness. A flash takes only a split second, but recreating these subjects on canvas is a lengthy process. This allows Tang to retreat to his internal dialogue between gazing at night, which is intuitive, and his impulse to create harmonic scenery. Anentirely new body of works showcased in this exhibition is a series of figurative paintings that takes on the human form with collages woven together with urban trees and fashion garments, whilst the trunks metaphorically represent the human body. The notion of concealing an organic body in camouflage acts as the artist’s central motif. While Tang casts a sharp eye onto how nature’s resources can be reduced to consumer products, he visualizes how they slip into daily life and crystallizes into our desire for nature.

The exhibition opening will be held on Thursday 15th September, 2022 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and will remain on view until 29 October, 2022. The artist and curator will be present at the opening.

Jacky Tsai: The Quarantine Era at Contemporary by Angela Li

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Contemporary by Angela Li is proud to present The Quarantine Era, solo exhibition of London-based Chinese pop artist Jacky Tsai. Tsai is renowned for his interplay of Chinese and Western cultures in his works and his artistic practice is a hybrid of principles from both the East and West. In his new body of works, he employs an integrated perspective of mixing of ideologies into responding to the global pandemic. The exhibition’s opening will be held on the 13th of November from 2 to 6 p.m. in conjunction with Central West Hong Kong, and will remain on view till 18th of December 2021.

Tsai uses various traditional Chinese techniques, such as porcelain, Suzhou embroidery, lacquer carving and hand-crafted screen prints in his works that are presented with a contemporary Western touch. This gives his works a unique narrative that describes the tension between the cultural clashes of the Eastern and Western worlds, between the classical and the contemporary. Tsai’s creative renditions allow him to explore contemporary issues in a playful and satirical manner. In addition to Tsai’s use of the pop art style, the artist is also deeply vested in Chinese artistry and aspires to preserve the centuries-old Chinese craftsmanship through nuancing them into his artistic expression.

Chan Wai Lap, The Lonesome Changing Room 2

After the huge success of his solo project, Chan Wai Lap has recreated the Lonesome Changing Room 2 at Contemporary by Angela Li. By constructing a changing room-like, private environment within a public space, Chan invites the audience to reinvestigate the relationship between individuality and the community, in response to the pandemic. The exhibition is an integration of the artist’s research and personal experience, and presents an opportunity for visitors to act as intruders to the artist’s or other people’s privacy, creating an intimate dialogue. Alongside usual objects seen in a changing room, such as lockers and showers, on show will be Chan’s latest series of paintings and installations created in the past year. As soon as the audience step into the space, they discover bits and pieces of Chan’s observation offstage, hence an intimate dialogue with the artist is immediately induced. “The Lonesome Changing Room 2” opening reception will be held at 5 – 8 pm, Thur 3 Jun, with special performance by Chan Wai Lok, Ivan Chan and Leung Tin Chak.
