ZEITGEIST Hong Kong series: EJAR at Goethe-Institut

In the thick of the Pandemic, an underground artist collective was burgeoning in Hong Kong while we were panicking about what the unpredictable future would bring. EJAR ( EASTERN JADE Art Renaissance) envisions and creates a utopia in a tenement building in Shau Kei Wan. EJAR is the name of: a shared artist studio space, an artist-collective, and a spirit. Their artistic practices encompass visual arts, contemporary sound and music, curation and arts education. The curator capitalizes the Goethe-Gallery and presents personal works by the four core members; and through their experiences and creations they respond to our time, the Zeitgeist.

EJAR is a self-initiated Hong Kong’s artist collective. This exhibition features personal works by the four core members– HO Julvian, Dino Rib, Shek Po Kwan and Gavin Yip. Curated by Kalen Lee.

The exhibition opens on April 5, 2025 (Sat) from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM with a guided tour by the curator and the artists.

Yasmine Anlan Huang and Lean Lui: Strait is the Gate at Goethe-Institut

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to present “Strait is the Gate,” a two-person show by Yasmine Anlan Huang and Lean Lui at the Institut's Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio from September 26 to October 26, 2024.

"What is something that is utterly hopeless, yet can forever remain in one's heart?" Inheriting André Gide's inward questioning, the juxtaposition of dreamy yet fragile metaphors and traces of violence often take center stage in the narratives of Lui and Huang. Exemplifying an approach influenced by Daoism, Lui’s signature visual style comprises exaggerated close-up shots and meticulously arranged mundane objects. Meanwhile, Huang employs a similarly delicate method, drawing inspiration from global news and poetic verses to unveil the interplay of geopolitical conflicts and urban anxieties. Through the portrayal of ethereal yet emotionally enigmatic young girls, the two artists examine pre-existing power structures and the stereotypical perception of vulnerability, invoking a pursuit of themes such as truth and courage in everyday life.

"He is the Hong Kong legendary figure who treated public spaces as his canvas."

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to present, in collaboration with L+/Lucie Chang Fine Arts, the exhibition "Rediscovering the King of Kowloon" in the Goethe-Gallery and the Black Box Studio of the Goethe-Institut from May 17 to June 20, 2024.

The purpose of this exhibition is to allow everyone to embark on a journey of rediscovering the King of Kowloon, a figure who transcended artistic boundaries and became a symbol of Hong Kong. In his life story, we feel the resonance brought by his indomitable spirit. Throughout his life, Tsang Tsou Choi, also known as the King of Kowloon, never considered himself an artist. To him, graffiti in the streets of Hong Kong was merely a pure form of self-expression. With the passage of time and the shift in Hong Kong's identity, his works, which were once controversial, now carry multiple universal values.

What characterises a sculpture? The property of being three-dimensional? An object of art that can be viewed from several perspectives? Or the material from which the artwork is constructed, peeled or moulded? Two ideas play a central role in the sculptures of Kai Schiemenz (born 1966 in Erfurt, Germany): the surface and the process. Every object was once something else: rocks or polystyrene blocks that become coloured glass via a silicone mould, computer scribbles that end up as ceramic tiles or concrete bases that become independent sculptures in a new context. And last but not least, ideas of architecture and urban spaces, from which these abstract objects mentally grow. (Leonie Pfennig)

Kwong San Tang, Nga Chi Yuen: Somewhere in Time at Goethe-Gallery

In the 1950s, the British Hong Kong Government installed public phone booths across Hong Kong.

We selected one of these now disused booths, about one square metre in size, wrapped it in a reflective cover, and drilled a hole into a coin from the colonial era, making a pinhole darkroom. Through inverted images, the viewer shuttles back and forth between landmarks before and after the handover, tracing the shifting political relationship between ‘deconstruction’ and ‘construction’.

A discarded phone booth, waiting to be dismantled, a memento of the Queen still being circulated today.

SUSTAIN*ABILITY*ART at Goethe-Institut

Goethe-Institut Hongkong, in collaboration with the Consulate General of France and the Consulate General of Germany, proudly introduces the collective art exhibition Sustain*Ability*Art. This showcase is geared towards enhancing public understanding, especially among young individuals, about the environmental issues challenging our planet.

French architect Charlotte Lafont-Hugo and German artist Cornelia Erdmann have partnered with students pursuing a Higher Diploma in Visual Arts and Culture at the Hong Kong Design Institute to craft this exhibition. The display features diverse mixed media artworks meticulously fashioned from repurposed materials. Through collaboration with the local non-governmental organization Plastic Free Seas, discarded waste gathered from the shoreline was ingeniously transformed by student artists into art installations and multi-dimensional mixed media pieces that stimulate our senses and contemplation. These creations spotlight the environmental consequences of unsustainable human consumption and excessive plastic use.

Performance-based Exhibition Baker's Lung at Goethe-Institut

Performance-based Exhibition Baker's Lung at Goethe-Institut

Baker's Lung is a new work that combines the professional baking experience of Felix Del Tredici and the instrumental practice of trombonists and improvisers. Together with multifaceted performing artist Kalun Leung, the work explores the similarities between two ancient art forms in a unique performance-based installation that is currently in development. It is a one-of-a-kind experience that promises to be both thought-provoking and entertaining.

As brass performer and professional baker, Felix is fascinated by the fundamental process of energy transformation that converts lip vibration into sound and the grinding of raw wheat into edible foodstuff. Both music and food are communal experiences that allow for community connection, and Baker's Lung aims to amplify this connection between baking and music.

The installation draws on a variety of cource material, including body camera footage from Felix's bakery, different types of grains and seeds, old-time recipes, Hong Kong street market objects, and the sounds and visuals of dough mixing, a steam-injected oven, dividing and shaping breads, and the small mill grinding wheat berries. These audiovisual materials will be transformed in a variety of ways through interactive technologies, the interpretation of performers, and the participation of audience members.

Baker's Lung offers and artistic interpretation of the cacophony and insights from a baker experiences, provides a behind-the-scene view into the complexity and chaos that comes with the making of one of the most important and universal food staples.

Artists:
Felix Del Tredici
Kalun Leung

Time and date of the performance sessions:

"Memories are motionless, and the more securely they are fixed in space, the sounder they are." Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space.

ifva partners with Goethe-Institut Hongkong to present solo exhibitions for Media Art Category local awardees. This year the two parties will present the solo media arts exhibition "Wend a Way" of Jess Lau, the Gold Awardee of the 27th ifva Media Art Category, which reconstructs the memories of the city and moving bodies through a collection of new and old media artworks. Jess Lau creates moving images through monotonous and repetitive motions to emphasise the relationship between moving images and the motions of bodies. Memories rest in places where stories are unfolded, be it a river, an avenue, a body or even a white wall. Viewers revisit the twisting and chaotic memories through the flowing of images to realise memories are now wending in an unfamiliar gesture, which reshape and reform to connect with the imagined.

The lonesome spring is approaching. We yearn to sing freely and migrate like birds, but the price of staying alive remains a mystery. Farmers, like their crops, used to live with the land. Some of them, however, are uprooted and rely on their intuition to flow steadily in the sky, just to prevent themselves from falling back onto the soil.

It is an unsettling field in and out. Could nature articulate the true self by provoking our emotions?

May Fung and Tang Kwok-hin at Goethe-Institut

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to have supported Hong Kong artists May Fung and Tang Kwok-hin in their research trips to Kassel, to experience the "Lumbung" concept of documenta 15. What have May Fung and Tang Kwok-hin got upon their return from Kassel's documenta 15? Could there be more frustration and skepticism? In doubting and caring about the restriction and approach of documenta 15, how do we look at the glory and the loss of art?

As a follow-up programme of their research trips, May Fung and Tang Kwok-hin will present an exhibition at the Goethe-Gallery and the Black Box Studio from October 15 to November 5, 2022.

May Fung creates a conceptual object-painting installation to contrast a realistic collage installation of photographic images and texts she collected inside and outside documenta 15. The two installations gaze at each other letting the audience interpret and imagine by themselves. Ultimately we may ask: how do art clusters sustain development of art in different times and spaces?

Social media has brought tremendous changes to intrapersonal, interpersonal, group and mass communication processes. As millennials we witnessed the changes in communication patterns, as we were born in the analogue world, and grew into the digital era of living a virtual life rather than a virtuous life. We vainly, and inevitably, hope to replace the in-person contacts with virtual communications. Though, after being in a pandemic for almost 2 years, we have to admit that the tactile form of communication is indispensable. Humans are by nature social animals after all.

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to present a series of programmes under the umbrella topic of "The Body and the City" from August

Curatorial Statement:
One must agree that the relationship between the people's bodies and the cities is indivisible and complex at any moment. Human body starts a conversation with the urban space not only with its physical reaction but also with its memories, individually and collectively.

When the city becomes the main body of the narrativity, rather than being barely the space where people's reactions take place, the discussions are no longer necessarily carried out in a geographical and chronological manner. "The Body and The City" presents selected interdisciplinary art works in considering both the body and the city as a subject rather than an object, aims to investigate the traces and experiences within the containers which are made up of flesh and concrete.

“Subtle Light” is a term derived from Chapter 36 of Tao Te Jing. In this chapter, retreat is taken as a gesture of advancement, and things go beyond limits may occur on a flip side, as the worse things get, the better is foreseen. Photo And Media Art Exhibition By Siu Wai Hang at Goethe-Institut

Siu Wai Hang primarily engages with photography. His work makes use of different methods and photographic principles to express Siu’s solicitude for the society and his contemplation on the medium. Local history threads Siu’s practice and is the vessel through which he uncovers the values of Hong Kong. He is interested in depicting landscape and object for they connect people with collective memories. The subject matters are coupled with his take on the nature and strength of photography, highlighting the encounter between traditional photography and contemporary digital work.

“Since the year before the city has entered a state of absurdity. Major transitions crept into individual experiences and the larger systems as preposterous doings pervaded the city. As suggested by photojournalist Don Mccullin’s eponymous autobiography, the atrocity of war goes beyond the plight and misery of the moment to inflict hearts with eternal disquietness.”

Goethe-Institut Hongkong has been partnering with ifva in presenting solo exhibitions for the Festival's Media Art Category local awardees. Following Hui Wai-keung, Kenny Wong and Carla Chan, this year the two parties will present Chris Cheung (h0nh1m)’s first solo media arts exhibition at the Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio.

“Inheriting unfinished ambitions, embarking on an enlightening journey.”

After everything we have been through, we have arrived at the present moment and are now considering our future. We understand that art is a never-ending practice.

Ink, stone and calligraphy descend from Eastern aesthetics. The beauty of the sky, the mountains, the sun, the moon, and the stars was captured by ancient literati in poetry, calligraphy and painting; passed down to this day, unforgotten after more than a thousand years. In the digital age, data has become the carrier of memory which also serves to inject new vigour into artistic creation. But will human memory fall into extinction due to interventions in technology?

50 years of queer life and culture in Germany
Special guest: Jimmy Sham, Member, Rainbow Action.

“Queer as German Folk” tells the stories of LGBTQI* (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-, queer and intersex) people fighting for visibility, recognition and equality over the past 50 years in both parts of Germany. It shows West-German gay movements as well as lesbian church groups in the GDR, the community of people of colour, feminist activists, trans* and intersex people, and the queer history in the GDR. More than 100 exhibits - photographs, posters, leaflets, underground fanzines, artworks and videos - convey the sound of fierce controversies, resistant actions, idiosyncratic performances and exuberant parties of the last 50 years of queer life in Germany.

There will be a series of accompanying programmes to the exhibition, including guided tours, a panel discussion on Gay Marriage and Rainbow Families, a talk on Migrant Pride... etc. Please check the regular updates on our website!

Group Exhibition "Tongueless" at Goethe Institut

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is presenting a series of programmes on the topic of “Civil Society, Arts and Mental Balance” in this September and October. To kick off the programme series, the exhibition “Tongueless” will open with an artist talk on September 3, 2020 (Thu) at 7:00pm at the Goethe-Gallery and Black Box Studio of the Institut.

The artworks by six Hong Kong artists take a multitude of forms, exude a kind of rawness and authenticity which heightened the individuality of each person’s journey. The exhibition serves to be the vehicle for self-expression that allows someone else a tiny glimpse into another world. The artworks demand engagement and draw attention to often otherwise silenced issues, experiences or perspectives. Through the exhibition, the audience is invited to experience elements of mental issues for themselves.

Curator: KY Wong
Artists: Oscar Chan Yik Long, Chloe Cheuk, Ho Sin Tung, Andy Li, Stanley Shum, Sean Won
