One • Square • Water • Soil at Hong Kong Arts Development Council

'One • Square • Water • Soil' draws inspiration from the Chinese proverb '一方水土養一方人' (The land’s water and soil nurtures its people) to delve into the intricate connections between environment, culture, and human character. From the natural landscape to the social fabric of life, 'water and soil' are not only the foundation of thought and sentiment but also a vital source of creativity for artists.

Curated by acclaimed local photographer Almond Chu, the exhibition showcases works by six Hong Kong-based artists across diverse mediums, including photography, sculpture, ceramics, and kinetic art. Through their distinctive perspectives, the artists engage with the essence of this land, interweaving its memories and cultural fabric into evocative artistic narratives.

This exhibition invites viewers to embark on a journey of reconnection with the land, uncovering the city’s untold stories through the lens of art. It offers a profound exploration of how creativity illuminates the spirit of a place and how that spirit continues to shape who we are.

Beyond Chaos, Only Creation at The Gallery of Hong Kong Art School

The three artists in this joint exhibition – Waverly Wong, Toby Wong, and Maria Cheung – come from diverse backgrounds. It is hard to believe they studied together at the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University School of Art, a fascinating twist of fate that can also serve as a source of inspiration. The ideas that sparked from their unexpected encounter developed into the central theme of this exhibition.

These three artists believe that once the “random thoughts mechanism” is activated, it is as if our senses, consciousness, and mind are freely wandering, giving rise to fragmented thoughts that are, in fact, “gifts to artists”. By closely observing these random thoughts, they can reflect on the present and transform them into deeply personal creations, a process of recognizing and integrating their authentic selves.

Elaine Chiu: The World Map from Hong Kong at HKAC

After three years, Elaine Chiu's latest solo exhibition The World Map from Hong Kong will feature the artist's current series of canvas and paper paintings to explore the urban landscape of Hong Kong after the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown during that time has prompted artists to use visual methods to reflect on what peace and balance are. In this exhibition, the canvas has become an "experimental map" in Elaine Chiu's works. She uses different colour blocks and pixels to test new order and balance and draws imaginary maps one after another based on Hong Kong's vision to find the answer in her heart.

Curated by Dr KK Chan.

Venue address: HKAC Diana Cheung Experimental Gallery, 3F, Hong Kong Arts Centre, Wanchai

Digital Shape of Ceramics at Hong Kong Art School

Digital Shape of Ceramics at Hong Kong Art School

The exhibition “Digital Shape of Ceramics” features works from sixteen alumni and teaching staff of Hong Kong Art School, including five ceramicists and eleven students, who recently participated in the short course “Experimental 3D Clay Printing”. The main objective is to explore the possibilities of clay 3D printing, as a stand-alone method of making, or to act as an enhancement to other traditional ways of making. Creations include scanning real-life objects and constructing 3D models using AI technology. By utilizing 3D printing, ceramicists can create intricate designs with greater ease and precision, resulting in more complex meshes and curves that are otherwise challenging to replicate through alternative methods. “In time 3D printing will just become considered part of the ceramic tradition.” — Jonathan Keep. 3D printing technology has opened up new ways of making, allowing artists to bring complicated ideas to life.

Dave Chow Yui-wang: Vroom Vroom at HKAC

Vroom Vroom encapsulates a driving technique that intricately orchestrates the manipulation of vehicular or mechanical apparatus, deftly navigating the delicate balance between regulated order and spontaneous tumult. In the transitional space of HKAC Diana Cheung Experimental Gallery, Dave Chow revolved around a nuanced interplay of control and chaos as the subject-matter for his first solo exhibition, exploring sculptural language of monumental- sized sculptures made with composite materials, as it pertains to the paradoxical coexistence of speed and power, alongside fragility and peril.

Drawing a parallel to the experience of flying at near-light speeds in the cosmos, as scientists simulate the momentary vistas that swiftly expand and dissolve into an abyss of infinite darkness, the exhibition space, delineated a a dimly lit corridor composed predominantly of rubber materials, sets ablaze by the compelling escape of light from low-intensity reflective surfaces.

Connie Lo: Murmuring in a Glass Tube at Hong Kong Arts Centre

"I close my eyes and take a breath; murmurs levitate within the depths of my body. The world outside the room is beaming with light. Air rushes into my hollow body—nearly rupturing my skin as if it is the surface of a soap bubble. "
In his book “The Poetics of Space”, French philosopher Gaston Bachelard examines the house as an analogy to the human soul, maintaining that we can learn to abide within ourselves by remembering the houses in which we have found shelter, because houses “are in us as much as we are in them”. In her first solo exhibition “Murmuring in a Glass Tube”, artist Connie Lo imagines the body as a room as she presents a series of prints, sounds and three-dimensional works to depict the bodily abyss.

Connie Lo graduated from the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme co-presented by RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School in 2015. She subsequently completed a Masters of Arts (Fine Arts) degree at the University of Leeds in 2018.
