Aries Wu Chun Yin: Sending You a Bouquet from Space at Touch Gallery

Everything we hold in nature and life is an invaluable gift from the universe. Life may be brief, but the cosmos is infinite; ultimately, we will return to it, becoming part of the vast expanse. Perhaps we are, in essence, the universe itself. Aries, fueled by his passion for sketching, often looks up at the night sky, as if engaging in a dialogue with the cosmos and encountering both his past and future selves. Beneath the starry canopy, there are dreams, hopes, and limitless possibilities. He believes we were once stars and will again transform into celestial light in the future. This vision has become his beautiful aspiration to explore both himself and the universe.

Space knows no bounds; it grants us the freedom to continuously seek our souls. Aries integrates the sport of golf into his cosmic-themed artworks, where each struck golf ball serves as a signal to the universe—an exploration of the unknown and an encouragement to all: to boldly pursue their true selves and transcend limitations. In his paintings, space becomes not just a distant galaxy but a vibrant, enchanting playground. There, one can receive a long-awaited bouquet, engage in an exhilarating game of golf, or wander freely in joyous play. These images capture Aries's longing for the future and his deep gratitude for life.

Li Chi Tak: Big Time at Touch Gallery

As night falls, this evening feels different, perhaps with an endless potential.
To halt the night, we can only strive to intervene, to slow it down…
We often hear about the end of the world, and sometimes I wonder if one of those predictions was true, as we now find ourselves in the midst of it. With awareness, I sense my own evaporation has long begun, and my mind feels increasingly light.
In this room, the exhibition shall embody darkness, the essence of night, profound and deep. Visible yet invisible.
We live in the present, in the future, and simultaneously in the past.
Maintaining this delicate balance, we glide along a steady path.
Fate is like a web.
Time and again, I find myself defeated, unable to step back into the ring, as the memories of the fight gradually fade away.
Oh, how long have I been submerged in this tank of water?
Oh, where do you intend to take me?
When the spirit wanes, I find myself listening to "Big Time" once, twice, three times...

Wong Hau-Kwei: The Elegance of Constructive Ink at Touch Gallery

Chinese ink art has undergone thousands of years of cultural accumulation and boasts a brilliant historical legacy. It is neither appropriate nor feasible to simply integrate it into contemporary Western culture. Traditional landscape painting primarily relies on the techniques of contouring and texture, where contouring depicts outlines and texture expresses volume. As times have changed, established painting techniques have gradually evolved. The emergence of the Mi family’s landscape painting in the Song Dynasty marked the end of the dominance of contouring and texture, while splashed ink gradually became an important method in Chinese painting. In modern times, various unprecedented mechanical, physical, chemical, and digital technological methods have entered the realm of artistic creation.

Jessie Siu Ching-Chi: Inner Landscapes at Touch Gallery

In Buddhism, the concept of "Inner Landscapes" , refers to the complex emotional, mental, and spiritual realms within each individual. Cultivating inner landscapes emphasizes the journey back to the essence or true nature of oneself, liberating from superficial appearances and attachments, while encouraging a return to the quiet and pure nature of the self. Nowadays amidst external chaos and busy lives, the urge to seek inner tranquility becomes increasingly vital.

The exhibition "Inner Landscapes" aims to guide the audience towards self-reflection, exploring the path of personal practice and delving into the recognition of one’s true essence. The artworks draw inspiration from the philosophical underpinnings of inner exploration, capturing moments of fragility and loneliness through vibrant colors and shapes, depicting the struggles and elevations experienced during this introspective journey. Each piece symbolizes a voyage into the inner self, highlighting transformative moments of inspiration.

In the slightly cooler weather, a passionate spirit prevails. December consistently evokes vivid scenes beneath the chill of the air. Within the vibrant city, different colors and forms are hidden, like flames in the cold wind, burning energetically. Everyone is concluding a complete chapter while preparing to sprint towards new vistas.

The exhibition showcases the sincere creativity of 18 artists, who, while enjoying the creative process, also imprinted their profound emotions into their works. The artistic perspectives encompass philosophical reflections, myriad landscapes, and various interpretations of urban life.  What we see is not just the finished artworks, but also the thoughts, strength, and life experiences of the artists behind them. Whether you are the creator or the observer, as long as you embrace and value the moment, every moment is the "Best of Times."

William Lim: Fish Wishes at Touch Gallery

In this vibrant city, culture and art flow like a gentle stream, enriching our lives. After a year of meticulous preparation, I am thrilled to once again  present my second solo exhibition at Touch Gallery, "Fish Wishes." This exhibition not only continues my artistic journey but also pays heartfelt homage to the rich culture of Hong Kong.

In Chinese culture, auspicious symbols carry profound meanings, representing comfort and blessings. Over time, these symbols have gradually woven themselves into our daily lives, becoming an integral part of our spirit. In Hong Kong, auspicious culture is omnipresent, reflected in everything from home decorations to social etiquette, showcasing people's aspirations for a beautiful life.

My fascination with fish stems from their unique symbolism and vitality. As early as the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2011, I designed a colourful lantern installation called "Lantern Wonderland" in Victoria Park. This piece not only celebrated the vibrancy of fish but also expressed my admiration for life itself. While fish are often depicted as culinary delights in Western art, in Chinese culture, they embody a deeper spirituality, symbolizing prosperity and hope.

Longing is the gentle gaze out the window at a distant view, the soft laughter that comes from watching a pet at play, the delicate paper boat drifting on the water, or the warmth of a tender embrace. At times, longing is simply the wish for a peaceful night’s sleep.

In this exhibition, Fung explores various forms of longing through the use of traditional gongbi painting techniques combined with Japanese gold and silver foil artistry. The depiction of animals, floral seas, ocean waves, and urban landscapes serves as a medium to delve into these emotions. In Fung’s work, snow leopards, dwelling in extreme environments, are not just fierce predators but also show strength and gentleness. This image contrasts and resonates with the urban animals portrayed in other works, further prompting reflection on the emotions of longing between humans and animals, as well as between people. The incorporation of Japanese gold and silver foil techniques enriches the visual texture and layers of the artwork, while also elevating the delicate emotions embedded within the pieces.

Heidi Ling: The Moon Wanes As It Waxes at Touch Gallery

When the moon gradually decreases from full moon to new moon, and then gradually increases back to full moon, "The moon wanes as it waxes", represents the changes and cycles in things, that even in seemingly incomplete states, they are still perfectly whole, but we are unable to directly observe their complete form.

In this exhibition, the artist captures a serene and detached ambiance by depicting the moon and the mudflat in monochromatic oil paintings. The moon and the flats are portrayed as distanced from the urban setting, akin to unknown territories, presenting daily scenes of  virtual and realistic. Painting utilizes landscapes and objects as metaphors and symbols, including lanterns and potholes, to metaphorically represent nihility and loss in the Hong Kong city. The artworks convey the beauty found in imperfections and the subtle joys amid the mundane.

This series of works explore the subtle connection between humans and nature, emphasizing the changes and cycles of life, as well as the human desire for exploration of the unknown and freedom. Despite the fluctuations and apparent incompleteness that things may go through, they still embody the essence of original nature, possessing inner beauty and significance.

Liu Cheng Mui and Phillip Hui: The Gift at Touch Gallery

Liu Cheng Mui and Phillip Hui: The Gift at Touch Gallery

The Touch Gallery will launch a joint oil painting exhibition - “The Gift” by renowned artists Liu Cheng Mui and Phillip Hui in July 2024. The emotional connections that gifts carry between people can transcend time and exist forever. For Liu, a gift is both a gift of life and a gift to give. She integrates various perspectives into her paintings, drawing inspiration from the objects given by her friends, the small toys she bought for her daughter, and the influence of masterpieces, reproducing the tenderness or thoughts behind the objects in the form of painting.

Besides objects, space can also be a gift filled with memories. Hui's Hong Kong is a miniature landscape where reality and fantasy blend. Through rich colours, he projects his emotions towards Hong Kong, capturing the bustling cityscape and the gradually disappearing scenery. As the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard believed, the world first seen in childhood is a picture-like world full of beautiful colours. Our imagination and dreams are built upon the memories of this primordial, colourful childhood world, which becomes the source of our imagination.

Marianne Lau: Muted Love at Touch Gallery

Marianne Lau: Muted Love at Touch Gallery

The tumult of the past five years have rocked many interpersonal relationships. Muted Love is a sampling of what it means to live through tough times, and sorting through private records of how one survives. Do you like what you used to like? Do you love who you say you love? Are we still hurting? Or do we live with the discomfort which we hope will resolve itself?

Imagine these thoughts pervading the mindscape of an artist confronting a blank piece of paper.

Marianne Lau revisits the Chinese ink painting tradition, which for many years she left behind.

In this exhibition the artist revels in scenes of the past, seeking solace in the storied Chinese ink painting tradition; and this grouping of paintings shows the artist's gradual return to her roots in Chinese calligraphy. Chinese characters in its very nature are formed by complex combinations of sinewy, curling strokes, which the artist couples with her interest in plants, landscapes, and the natural world.

Chow Chun Fai: Always After Future at Touch Gallery

Chow Chun Fai: Always After Future at Touch Gallery

I can't catch up with time.  Every moment I chase after nothingness, it just passes without sign. The present and future of time flow, expanding and contracting in different domains. Now I am entering an unknown space, overturning the concept of time. I expand the present and future infinitely, while selecting past stories like a collection of prose...

Two years later, we are at the second chapter of Chow Chun Fai’s Tarot series. Chow continues to incorporate Hong Kong scenery, classic Hong Kong film scenes, and elements of popular culture into the world of Tarot. Consistent with his playful and ironic interpretation, he expresses the emotions and impact this city has brought him. Through the inherent narrative, mystery, and symbolism of tarot, the artwork evokes the complexity of time and space. Seemingly logical past events seem to reveal a mysterious future. The Tarot series demonstrates how to deliberately misplace time, space, symbolism, and material in an orderly manner. This displacement is not concealed but not loud; as if it is composed of many fleeting moments that flicker in life. The non-linear arrangement allows viewers to further enter the artist's perception, and the contextually related meanings lead to emotional exchanges.

Kan Tai Keung: Rediscovering the Origin at Touch Gallery

Kan Tai Keung: Rediscovering the Origin at Touch Gallery

In December 2022, Touch Gallery hosted my solo exhibition, showcasing the mental images I have continually explored since 1966. Apart from a few practices works from the 1960s, most are ink paintings in various artistic styles that I started from 1970. This presented the path of my learning in art and the mind of the development of new ink creations.

In the new century, I have been developing text landscape painting for more than 20 years, integrating calligraphy with the landscape into a unique style. In 2018, I returned to the simplest geometric compositions for landscapes, “proudly reciting and singing with pines and quiet flowers,” seeking a tranquil state of mind amidst the turmoil of the world.

After turning eighty, I rediscovered my original intention, freely cultivating it that I have tended for 50 years. This May, I will share my achievements with everyone at my solo exhibition in Touch Gallery.

Justin Lim: Private Vanitas at Touch Gallery

In recent years, I have been particularly drawn to illustrating elements of everyday life. Capturing fleeting moments, one that might not be noticed otherwise. Through this portrayal of still life and interior scenes, I wanted to depict a modern interpretation of the genre, whilst paying homage to the age-old concept of Vanitas paintings.

Vanitas artists in the 17th century devoted their craft to portraying a message that things of this world - pleasures, money, beauty & power were not everlasting properties. Using symbology such as wilting flowers, skulls, musical instruments and food to convey this theme throughout their works. They mainly take on two interpretations within this theme. First, a hopeful approach, which compares the fleeting and vain nature of earthly pursuits to a glorious eternal afterlife and the second, which speaks of the fleeting nature of existence itself, where life is all there and so the meaning lies in the pursuit of all of its pleasures while it lasts. By paying homage to the past by interpreting the vanitas symbology into contemporary allegories that speak about mortality and the cycle of life in contemporary environments, they document personal dialogues of the everyday and intimate glimpses into these transient memories.

Lau Kam Hung: Silver Lining at Touch Gallery

Lau Kam Hung: Silver Lining at Touch Gallery

The closing line of Su Shi's poem "Ding Feng Bo" from the Northern Song dynasty, "Turning my head, I see the dreary beaten track. Impervious to rain or shine, I'll have my own will." uses weather and scenery as a metaphor for the various experiences in life, leaving behind a multitude of reflections as it transcends time. For Hong Kong artist Lau Kam Hung, the combination of sunny days and the interplay of storms and calmness create the tapestry of our lives, shaping them into a complete whole. Despite their unpredictability, these experiences are essential and enriching, offering valuable lessons and growth along the way.

Lau Kam Hung’s solo exhibition, titled "Silver Lining," responds to the theme of "Rain or Shine" with real-life scenery. It also inherits the tradition of literati landscape painting and integrates it into the artwork, presenting an alternative imagination of contemporary landscape painting. While interpreting "contemporary scenarios" in an "ancient style," Lau also showcases "contemporary materials" as "ancient ink and brushstrokes." He uses graphite and silver paint as painting media to interpret contemporary landscapes in a highly distinctive style. This serves as an expression of his unique visual language, exploring and paying homage to the philosophy of ink painting that has spanned thousands of years, and constructing a space for profound and extensive interpretations.

Chivas Leung: If the World Ends Tomorrow at Touch Gallery

Chivas Leung: If the World Ends Tomorrow at Touch Gallery

The exhibition "If the World Ends Tomorrow" showcases a series of eight paintings by Chivas Leung, inspired by the eponymous song of the local band, Fan Hung A. This song was released during a difficult and turbulent period and has accompanied Chivas throughout the years. Have you ever imagined the end of the world? This song has a lively rhythm and sings about embracing the last moments with that special someone, assuming the world will end tomorrow. Reflecting on these years spent locked up in her room, Leung has been constrained not only by society and the covid but also by her own inner world. Sometimes, art practice and life felt like self-imposed restrictions. She has often imagined the arrival of the end of the world, yet she has also imagined different wonderful journeys. Just as the song says, if the world were to end, Chivas envisions herself embarking on that journey with the people she cherishes, disregarding reality and obstacles. Although the end of the world has not arrived, and these journeys remain imaginary, Chivas still hopes to record these emotions and bring them to life on the canvas, making the imagined journeys come true and hoping to finally find a way out, exploring the beautiful world alongside her loved ones. At the same time, she invites the audience to embark on this journey together, asking, "Will you join me this time?"

Lau Hong Lam: JE NE SAIS QUOI Vol. III — The Pneuma of Eurydice at Touch Gallery

Lau Hong Lam: JE NE SAIS QUOI Vol. III — The Pneuma of Eurydice at Touch Gallery

In Greek mythology, Orpheus was endowed with exceptional musical talent. One day, his wife Eurydice suffered an unfortunate death by snakebite. The grief-stricken musician descended into the land of the dead in an attempt to recover his lost wife. Singing and playing the lyre, he charmed the guardians of River Styx to make an exception and let him cross. Even Hades, king of the underworld, was moved and allowed him to take Eurydice back under one condition: Orpheus must not look back, or else she would be condemned to the underworld forever. Orpheus could not stand the test and turned around at the last moment. Because of this glance, Eurydice slipped away almost immediately. In the end, Orpheus, who lost his wife twice, was killed by frenzied female followers of Dionysos. Perhaps Orpheus was willing to be killed because he wanted to see what the underworld looks like together with Eurydice, sacrificing his life as a gift.

However, no one has ever wondered what’s in Eurydice's mind - is she suffering, in the underworld, as much as Orpheus does, or has she already decided to let go of her beloved? Perhaps what Eurydice hopes for is a reunion with Orpheus, a chance to share with him what she sees and hears in the underground, and to give him a warm hug. To Eurydice, the underworld is not a terrifying place; it is heaven as long as she is with Orpheus.

There are five rivers in the underworld. They reflect emotions associated with death, as well as the five stages of grief (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance); only crossing the rivers can the soul be liberated and revived. The duality behind the rivers is just as the cake served to Cerberus/There are two sides to the rivers, just as the cake served to Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld. This piece of cake can be a distraction to the hound from Orpheus on this way, meanwhile, it is also a gift of hope to Eurydice.

“If I cannot move heaven, I will raise hell.”  Virgil “Aeneid”

Our team had the privilege of visiting Marian’s studio in Chai Wan, located on Hong Kong Island, where we engaged in a thoughtful discussion centred around the concept of a ”room of one‘s own.“ This concept holds great significance for all female artists, as it represents a space where they can write, paint, create, and focus solely on their artistic endeavours.

Marian’s upcoming solo exhibition, ”A Room of One‘s Own,“ is scheduled to commence on October 5th. This exceptional exhibition forms an integral part of the larger event titled ”Her Stories Unveiled: Art Charity Exhibition.“ We invite you to join us at the Touch Gallery, where you can personally explore the captivating ”Rooms“ and immerse yourself in the unique artistic narratives they hold.

Law Man Lok: O~Fortuna! at Touch Gallery

O~Fortuna! How beautiful and cruel are you? ! I saw that desperate boy grow into a passionate jester, with roses planted in his heart, and a turret hidden in his mouth, vowing to entangle you till the end of the universe.

Fate always tricks people, makes people experience hardships. People be parted in life and separated by death. In this post-covid era, with a deep emotional and physical impact, the classic "memento mori" theme presented in "O~ Fortuna!", became Lawman’s inspiration. With his "kitsch pastiche" artistic approach which includes compassion and humor for the world, he implemented a painting game of joy and anger by citing classics, and also led the audience to relive Lawman’s own journey of jester aesthetics from Goya to Zunzi.

Opening reception: 08.09.2023 (Friday) 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Tsang Chui Mei: Mind Palette and Empty Land at Touch Gallery

Nature abounds with diversity, manifesting in varied shapes and hues; the human heart, with its unique individuality, radiates its own inherent beauty……

Tsang Chui Mei, a local artist from Hong Kong, resembles both natural landscapes and dreamscapes on her canvases. She infuses her works with a unique visual language and a variety of materials that evoke endless imaginations. In Tsang's artistic world, the concept of space is symbolic. She presents landscapes that are abstract and expressive, immersed with her personal emotions and thoughts, and that differ from reality. The spatial imagery contained in this exhibition portrays delicate and obscure inner landscapes, representing a tranquil and non-existent state.

Tsang Chui Mei's theme of “Mind Palette and Empty Land” comprises three parts: “different”, “colour”, and “fair”. This theme represents a marketplace constructed from infinite colours within a space that is different from the ordinary world. "Fair" not only implies a lively market, but also represents a tranquil and non-existent state, according to Tsang's description. However, it is within this state that the unique and exquisite sense of contrast becomes the highlight that distinguishes Tsang from other artists. Using material as her visual vocabulary, Tsang symbolises the forms of mountains and rocks in the wilderness with fragmented textures and colours that appear to be cracking. She also employs snow and scattered ice cubes as metaphors to represent the appearance and process of growth and decline in nature.

Deeply fascinated by the changes and disappearances in nature, Tsang Chui Mei hopes to enable the audience to perceive the elusive power and brilliance of the wild landscapes' abstract and expressive form, as well as the tranquillity and loneliness within the realm of emptiness and reality. Furthermore, Tsang aims to convey the profound connection generated by the subtle relationship between nature and humanity. Touch Gallery cordially invites you to attend Tsang Chui Mei's solo exhibition, "Mind Palette and Empty Land," to enter this space where art and nature blend, to experience the interweaving and colliding yet merging realm between art and nature, and to sense the illusory dreams at the end of the soul.

True to Form: The Power of Depicting Reality at Touch Gallery

What is realistic art? Plato's theory of art posits that humans, as aesthetic subjects, strive to imitate and approach nature to the best of their abilities through artistic creation. However, if art is solely about revering and imitating nature, how can artists express their own subjectivity, and what is the purpose of realism? Realistic art, however, is not limited to mere imitation and reverence for nature. Countless artists infuse their works with their own subjectivity and creativity, resulting in each piece being unique. Realistic artists convey their understanding and emotions about reality through their own skills and imaginations, engaging with their audience through these distinctive sensibilities.

Realistic art is like an eternal horizon, spanning the vast expanse of art history. Despite its continual evolution, its unique value and perspective continue to influence contemporary art to this day. This August, Touch Gallery presents "True to From: The Power of Depicting Reality", a group exhibition showcasing the works of local artists such as Aries Wu, Celia Ko, Lewis Lau, Mak Chung Yan, Ping Shun Chan, and Steven Tang. They represent a new generation of artists who use realism as a starting point to create something truly unique and meaningful.

We extend a warm invitation to you to join us at Touch Gallery and revel in the marvels of realistic art. Elpis Chow: Under the Sun: Re-visit at Touch Gallery

In the midst of a bustling city, our existence is split by the terminator, marking the division between day and night. During the daytime, we rush through the streets, without taking a moment to appreciate the unique and captivating scenery surrounding us. As we move through each day, all that occurs seems to serve as evidence of our busy lives, with endless missed moments slipping through our fingers.

Through the creative strokes of local artist Elpis Chow, even the most ordinary and unremarkable corners under the sun are fulfilled with infinite surprises. A meandering black cat roam through the alleys, leading us on a journey; while the abstract lines capture the essence of Japanese gardens in the "karesansui" style with perfectly placed blades of grass, stones, and woods; the flowing streams, clear as a mirror, reflect a pristine view, untouched by the dust of the world, pure and true… Elpis’s artworks contain another parallel dimension, in this realm, where sunlight reigns supreme, all is bathed in brilliance, a radiant gleam. Even the shadows cast by the sunlight present the essence of coolness and peacefulness.

French existentialist philosopher Sartre once said, "what you see is precisely what you want to see.” Through Elpis Chow’s unique perceptions, she leads viewers to step into a world of quiet and enigmatic daily scenes, often forgotten or overlooked. The exhibition "Under The Sun: Revisit" unveils ten of Elpis Chow's recent paintings. From bustling cityscapes, to tranquil courtyards and mountains, her works brim with poetry and imagination, imbuing ordinary subjects with new meaning and value. Join us on this journey in Touch Gallery, where the scenery follows the mind, and the beauty of ordinary objects is redefined. Let us meditate at the source of plants and trees, witness the diverse forms and spirits of all things.

Portrait: The Infinite and Beyond at Touch Gallery

Portrait: The Infinite and Beyond at Touch Gallery

Human faces become blurred or immortal after a passage of time. Did someone trace a silhouette of a person thousands of years ago at the dawn of human civilization, creating an everlasting mural? Can earthly beings, who are bound to perish, be granted the gift of immortality through the eternal, two-dimensional brush of a painting, as they are frozen in time and forever preserved in art?

In the past, portrait art prioritised depicting details and resembling reality as closely as possible. However, in the context of contemporary art, portraits are not just depictions of individual human beings. Instead, artists focus on personal experiences and reflections projected onto virtual images, pursuing to create "symbols" that resonate with audiences in the current era. Nowadays, the concept of portrait art has transcended realism and instead, artists use an abstract but sharp artistic touch to capture the pulse of contemporary culture and social ecology, paying humanistic care to the individual's spirit and soul.

Taiwanese contemporary artist Chen-Dao Lee combines popular realistic symbols, exaggerated movements, and vivid forms to create a dramatic atmosphere, empowering the originally plain images with a brand new impact. Japanese artist Hikari Shimoda reflects on her feelings of contradiction and absurdity in contemporary society through innocent yet slightly bizarre children figures. Jeremy Yamamura uses graffiti as a form of street art practice, while Thai artist Mariko Toey transforms different female images into the shape of a box with her innocent and lively artistic touch, which impresses many collectors and audiences. Hong Kong painter Glary Wu uses a warm and imaginative artistic approach to collect strangers' stories with a gentle art style in her paintings. The character images of Japanese illustrator JARO are bright and vivid, filled with the current trend of childlike innocence and humour. Korean artist Iurum uses a mixed medium as a way of artistic expression, embedding miniature figure paintings into ice cream, leading the audience to a new perspective to re-examine the ordinary but precious moments in life.
Each era has its own portrait style and trend, as does each cultural environment. In the context of post-modernity, every individual can create their own "portrait", and everyone has their own unique “portrait.” This June, Touch Gallery proudly presents Portrait: the Infinite and Beyond Group Exhibition. Showcasing multiple artists’ works from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds, which express their own unique interpretation of portrait art. We believe that through the exhibition space, an infinite possibility of portraits and imaginations are contained. We hope the audience can join us in experiencing the infinite charm of portrait art in the contemporary era, resonating with the "portraits" of others, and finding the unique "portrait” of your soul.
