From the semiotic point of view speech and language are fundamentally different. Speech is about immediate interaction, an exchange of not only sounds but also gestures and facial expressions. Language is a system containing a variety of symbols (including colour coding or road signs) and immediate communication is not necessary. These children’s scribbles made with machine embroidery can be seen as an attempt to learn how to transform inner speech into recognizable language patterns, a search, an invention or a training, depending on the age.
