The Light Shed on Nowhere — Chan Chi Yan Aria’s Solo Exhibition

Most of the time, "home" refers to a place. But it may also refer to certain people, cats, or landscapes. People instinctively regard a particular place as home. Yet, if the so-called home has become distant or unfamiliar, can we still call it "home"?

Through the exhibition, Chan Chi Yan Aria pondered the meaning of "home". "Home" is not only about the place we live but also our relationship with the city. Aria expresses a sense of alienation from the familiar surroundings through photo etching in the exhibition.

Modern technology is changing with each passing day. When printmaking was in a downturn in the late 1990s, Stephen Hoskins established IMPACT*. The biennial international printmaking conference has profoundly influenced the revival of contemporary print art, research on print technologies and their applications.

Hoskins is also the founder of the Centre for Print research at the University of the West of England. As a pioneer of traditional print techniques and state-of-the-art print technologies, Hoskins has made a significant contribution to the research of contemporary printmaking technology.

The 18 artworks presented in “Stephen Hoskins: Flight of Fancy” illustrate prints can be created beyond paper with such an appealing merge of traditional print art and modern print technology.

Tetsuya Noda : A Variation of Mimeograph at Hong Kong Open Printshop

Tetsuya Noda : A Variation of Mimeograph at Hong Kong Open Printshop

Since 1968, Tetsuya Noda has captured many moments in his life with a camera. These moments—his diary—have been the motif of his work for more than fifty years. These fragmentary seconds of light and shadow are transformed by the artist’s meticulously modulated plate-making process and precise preparations. As the ink penetrates and lies on the fibres of the Japanese washi paper, a fragment of a second settles and becomes eternal in Diary.

In the exhibition Tetsuya Noda: A Variation of Mimeograph, Hong Kong Open Printshop will be showcasing seven images of Rika, the printmaker’s daughter, from the Diary Series. Through the artist’s eyes, we witness the young girl growing up, getting married and becoming a mother. Looking at his works, that span 42 years, is like being embraced by a cloth of enduring love in all its glory and constancy.

HKOP Awardees in Printmaking Exhibition 2021-2022
◎- Back and Forth — Irene Lee See Wing’s Solo Exhibition

This is a story of wild ducks and wanderers of the city: a story that amplifies the emotions within the recurring everyday rituals and dialogues. In these repetitions, we traverse from macro to micro – the wild ducks accompany the wanderers and reflect on one’s self view in relation to the other.

Irene stacks multiple layers of colour, smoothens and preserves the rough texture of brushstroke to create mono screen prints. Through this, she presents the neglected characters and time gaps in the dark corners of the city.

In the circle of ◎, meeting wild ducks and the wanderers, Irene was able to start extraordinary dialogues: moments which have been condensed in her unique print works.

Nicolas Ho Sheung Yan: Softened at JCCAC

“Softened” is the comfort and encouragement you and I need in our journeys.

Art here has a soft touch, and embodies a gentle energy, bringing the audience’s focus to a quiet place. The word “tender” is something I always think about when making prints, as I remind myself not to go against my own weakness.

Jay Lau Ka-chun: Woodcut Portraits 2020-2021: This too shall (not) pass

We are living in times of constant change. There is no fixed trajectory for change, as not everything follows the logic of transition from old to new. Old and new have always been relative: what is old eventually becomes new again. Throughout the course of history, woodblock printing has always been used as a tool to facilitate cultural communication and social reform. Jay Lau Ka-chun will exhibit his woodblock portraits carved and printed over the past year—the faces of his friends encapsulating the zeitgeist of present Hong Kong. By casting his wooden plate in concrete, Lau attempts to abandon the traditional form of print on paper and explore more possibilities of displaying prints. Through this, he hopes to construct a unique visual language of woodcut which responds to changes in the society.
