Old Master Q 'Side_C' at Quiet Gallery

The exhibition is titled "OLD MASTER Q 'SIDE_C' EXHIBITION / 老夫子 'SIDE C'." Side C refers to Side Cast, Side Character, side role, extra, supporting actor, and more. In the classic "Old Master Q" comic strip, the supporting characters often compete with the three main characters for attention. The world is a stage, and all the men and women are mere actors. The members of Side C strive to play their respective roles well, presenting a great show every day through the "Old Master Q" comic strip that spans six decades under the guidance of two generations of Mr. Wang Ze. Gradually, it is realized that everyone around, including oneself, may be a member of Side C. On the occasion of celebrating the 60th anniversary of Old Master Q, special tribute is paid to these small characters in the comic strip.

About Artist:

Joseph Wong (Wong Chak) and his father Wong Ka Hei are both authors of the Old Master Q comic series. In 1995, Joseph Wong, who was already a professor and architect at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, USA, decided to establish a comic studio and licensing company in Taiwan. He made this decision upon realizing that his father, Wong Ka Hei, was getting older. While nurturing talented individuals in Taiwanese universities, Joseph Wong also took on the responsibility of continuing the creation and publication of the Old Master Q comic series, accompanying generations of readers as they grew up.

YOSHIROTTEN: Fluid Garden by Belowground at Landmark

LANDMARK and BELOWGROUND present ‘Fluid Garden’, a large-scale art installation in two phases alongside a unique retail concept by Tokyo-based multidisciplinary artist YOSHIROTTEN, curated by creative agency UNVEIL LIMITED. Showcasing his signature interplay between digital mirage and fantastical colours, YOSHIROTTEN made his first trip to Hong Kong for the opening of his debut solo show.

Starting with ‘Fluid Garden’, YOSHIROTTEN presents a new work featuring a water garden of light that transforms LANDMARK Atrium fountain into a spatial presentation that incorporates digital art. “In today’s busy world, it is difficult to slow down and enjoy life with your beloved ones around you. Through ‘Fluid Garden’, we aim to create a place where you can feel the luxury of being here, a place to stop and feel the time,” explains the artist.

As summer transitions into autumn, the next phase of the installation will commence at BELOWGROUND as ‘Moon Landing’, in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Tokyo-based artist YOSHIROTTEN is known for his works based around the motif of light, which aim to visualise the invisible, often through site-specific installations that combine two-dimensional, three-dimensional and video works.

Rockin’Jelly Bean: 耀 at Quiet Gallery

Returning to Hong Kong for his second solo exhibition, Rockin’Jelly Bean presents ‘耀’ at Quiet Gallery in Belowground. Interpreting the word “glory”, the exhibition showcases 45 prints and 14 original drawings in a mix of both new and previous pieces, alongside works that are out of print.

Inspired by the classic magazine Playboy, which he discovered as a teenager, the artist is known for his lascivious depictions, heavily influenced by cartoon and manga, notably of women with ‘cute’ faces that contrast against their sexy, curvaceous figures. Music and art form an inseparable bond in his life – as a former bassist in the band Jackie and The Cedrics, his artistic career began by drawing the brand’s performance leaflets and album covers.

Alongside the prints and original works, a limited-edition series of merchandise, including t-shirts and skateboards, will also be available for purchase during the exhibition period. To mark the opening of the exhibition, the artist made a personal appearance in Hong Kong for a signing session on 15th April, along with his two personal mascots, the Jelly Bean Girls.

Tyrrell Winston: Double Technical at Landmark Atrium & Belowground

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Tyrrell Winston (b.1985 in New York, US) lives and works in New York. Winston’s two- and three-dimensional works are the result of years of collecting, organizing, and reconfiguring discarded, dirty, (either physically or socially), and forgotten objects. Winston has obsessively collected these items from the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn, creating work that is part public service, part examination, and part fascination with the permanent energy left behind in these seemingly insignificant records of human existence. Winston’s work also revolves around drawing absurd parallels between contrasting objects and their narratives. The disparity of these elements examines hope and despondence, resurrection and regeneration, vitality and recklessness. It should be noted that all of the basketball nets that Winston uses are replaced with new nets. The work cannot exist without the immediate exchange of old and new. Each individual element used in Winston’s work carries its own identity, context, and inseparable association that creates an automatic dialogue. Unifying concepts of nostalgia, salvation, and rebirth, Winston’s work gives refuge to new life.

Izumi Keiji: Small Relationships in a Big World at Quiet Gallery

BELOWGROUND welcomes Quiet Gallery, which debuts with “Small Relationships in a Big World,” a solo exhibition by Tokyo-based artist Izumi Keiji.

On display is a showcase of 18 sculptural pieces that are all conceptual, yet somehow familiar and amusing – a galactic projection of objects sprouting from a woman’s head or the complex memories of a man represented by mini figures stacked along a staircase pattern. Each unique piece brings forth amusement with its sense of humor and special arrangements. Keiji incorporates various components in his pieces, just as his own personality is structured from contrasting elements. Through his creations, it seems that the individuality, including uncontrollable feelings and sensations, that characterize us are embodied as a part of the world that transcends humanity.

Yusuke Hanai: Facing The Current at Belowground

Yusuke Hanai: Facing The Current at Belowground

Facing the Current features the artist’s largest 3D artwork to date. Measuring at two meters in length, the man-in-a-boat sculpture is placed alongside 19 brand-new canvas and multi-layered frame drawings. The sculpture depicts a man glumly contemplating on a boat with his imaginary friend. Reflecting upon tough times, he seems resolute to face the “current”, wherever it may bring him.

The word “current” has the double entendre of “present” and “tide”. Surfers either go with the “current” – the “tide”, or combat it if they get swept away. The “current” is unpredictable and wild, as you can be on your surfboard in one moment, and get engulfed in a matter of seconds. As a metaphor in life, much of our life is spent on dealing with the “current” – the “present”. Everyone has our own “present” and reality to face. This got Hanai questioning: “do we want to live in the current without facing the present, or do we want to face the present and keep rowing against the harsh current?”

Organized and curated by AllRightsReserved the exhibition is the most comprehensive solo show overseas by Japanese artist Yusuke Hanai featuring his largest sculptural artwork to date alongside 19 brand-new canvas and multi-layered frame drawings.

Group Exhibition "Time Travel" at Belowground

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A tribute to the 80s golden age of street-culture in the US, JPS Art Gallery revived the scene of a New York City subway station with works of graffiti legend, Cope2 and two rising stars of the Hong Kong contemporary art scene, Afa Annfa and Chino Lam.

This revival is a celebration of the importance of street art and its legacy. Inspired by the concept of the cinematic classics, Somewhere in Time (1980), the exhibition sets the scene for meditation, allowing the audience to travel back in time. The modern subway doors are the portal of time that brings the audience back to the late 80s, a time when Cope2 and his crew were bombing the subways carriages and stations with their distinctive tags and graffiti, a time when street art was booming in the city.
