Kai and Fandi Angga Saputra: Colourful Shadow at Gallery Ascend

Prepare to be swept away on a whirlwind of artistic ecstasy as Gallery Ascend presents a spellbinding exhibition that blurs the boundaries of creativity and captivates the imagination. KAI and Fandi invite you to embark on an exhilarating journey through a realm where contrasts collide and colors converse.

KAI, the enigmatic virtuoso of obscurity, conjures a symphony of monochrome marvels that dance between light and shadow. With each stroke, Kai's canvases become portals to an alternative dimension – a dimension where silence resonates louder than words, and ambiguity is an art form in itself. The canvas becomes a canvas no more, but a gateway to introspection.

In a vivid counterpoint, Fandi Angga Saputra, a maestro of vibrant vivacity, beckons you to immerse yourself in his kaleidoscopic tapestry of memories and dreams. From the lush landscapes of Indonesia to the very canvas before you, Fandi's brushstrokes are a jubilant celebration of life's exuberance. It's a symphony of colors that crescendos with each glance. But here's where the magic truly unfolds – the fusion of Kai and Fandi's contrasting styles. A choreographed duet of monochrome and chromatic, shadow and light, form and color. It's a pas de deux that transcends the limits of the expected and waltzes into uncharted artistic territory. Like two cosmic dancers, they sway between worlds, leaving trails of wonder in their wake.

Annabel Faustin: Le Soleil se lèvera de nouveau at Gallery Ascend

Annabel Faustin: Le Soleil se lèvera de nouveau at Gallery Ascend

Annabel Faustin's paintings come to life at the crossroads of two worlds. Her themes are rooted in contemporary issues, such as ecological awareness and the new rise of feminism, while her gigantic characters and glowing colors seem to be straight out of a fantasy story. Even if Annabel takes a clear-eyed look at her time, her aim seems to take us away from the coldness of the real world to a more forgiving place, where man and nature live in perfect harmony and where solidarity is the order of the day.

‘The media today are responsible for making us feel guilty with anxiety- provoking images and videos. Perhaps the role of the artist today is to remind us that it is important to start dreaming again in order to live better, especially for the younger generations, who are particularly disenchanted" she says. Annabel Faustin has always admired the artistic approach of Niki de Saint Phalle, who was able to transform her tragic experience of reality into colorful, large and strong female figures. Thus, her giant women are reminiscent of the famous Nanas, sometimes becoming islands surrounded by red boats, sometimes transformed into mountains with houses and cypresses. The colors and the light of Annabel's paintings contribute to a quasi-religious adoration of Nature. Very much influenced by her childhood in the South where she grew up 'embraced by the Mountains, and rocked by the Sea' as she likes to say.

Annabel works with a tight palette of vibrant blues and oranges, inspired by the Fauvist painters who worshiped the unique light of the French Riviera. Recently, she also discovered the work of 19th century painter Utagawa Hiroshige, Japanese painter's prints in general who largely inspired her last paintings.

‘The Sun will rise again.’ is the fourth solo show of Annabel Faustin. The exhibition is both an invitation to contemplate nature and a message of hope.

So Youn Lee: In Limbo at Gallery Ascend

Gallery Ascend is thrilled to present "In Limbo," a mesmerizing solo exhibition by the highly acclaimed Korean artist, So Youn Lee. Lee's first-ever exhibition in Hong Kong will be on view at The Arca, 43 Heung Yip Road, Wong Chuk Hang.

Lee's artworks challenge traditional notions of human existence and delve into the invisible aspects of being human. Through her depictions of human beings as voyagers and aliens searching for their place in the universe, Lee's artwork centers on themes of individuality, authenticity, and the quest for self-discovery in an unpredictable world.

Her figures are metamorphic and metaphysical, reflecting how one's environment influences how they perceive themselves and the world. "In Limbo" explores themes of the afterlife and love. The exhibition draws inspiration from Lee's personal experience of losing her beloved dog, Choco, and the ensuing grief that led her to contemplate ideas of mythology and science fiction. The artwork creates a narrative around a new universe and planet where loved ones now reside in an eternal realm. In this new world, Choco serves as a proxy for the beloved, arriving in a new world that is just a vast emptiness of space filled with potential yet unrealized. The exhibition features a body of artwork that grapples with themes of despair, karma, weakness of mind, desire, and reincarnation. It is both mystic and moody, yet familiar and beautiful.

The artworks on display in "In Limbo" employ diverse media, such as oil and acrylic paints, ceramic sculptures, and digital media, such as 3D and digital paintings, to push the limits of her art and highlight the fluidity and progression of the human experience.

Maiko Kobayashi: A Place For Wandering Hearts at Gallery Ascend

Maiko Kobayashi’s oeuvre is a profoundly colored and cartoonish creature. One of the most prominent aberrations of the creature is its ever changing form, while it has no direct correlation with any actual being in reality. Kobayashi used her own feelings as a point of departure, the creature accentuates her emotions through child-like simpers, captured in numerous moods such as peacefulness, emptiness, fear and bliss. Her graphical compositions are often accompanied by soft and crumbly textures, which have given a complex depth to the portraits.

Mental state is a touchy subject to get on with, it could be a hurricane for a second and a marshmallow heaven the next. To survive both, Maiko Kobayashi created an extension of her feelings on 11 canvases, showcasing her cosmos at the gallery’s home-field in Wong Chuk Hang.

Han Choong Seok: Negative space of Relationships at Gallery Ascend

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

All the way from South Korea, Han Choong Seok is kicking off his latest ‘away game’ at Gallery Ascend this March, where Koren canvas crosses paths with contemporary friskiness.

The latest series of Han advocates around the nature of contemporary relationships. In his own philosophy, people enter and leave one’s life in unexpected ways. He was highly inspired by the one saying Vivienne Westwood made “Don’t expect too much from people. Don’t be jealous, either. People stay when in love and leave when they aren’t, and that’s the nature of relationships. So, don’t be too concerned with too many things. Also, always be open to learning new things, and remember to take care of yourself.” The main protagonists of his paintings are a set of caricatures of men and characters of owls, dogs, and cats rendered in Han’s unique style, but contrary to what they seem, they are, in fact, radiating “passion for communication” towards the world.

Hyun Jung Ji: Fairytale Dream at Gallery Ascend

Gallery Ascend is pleased to announce our next exhibition Fairytale Dream featuring the work of Hyun Jung Ji. The solo exhibition from the South Korean-born artist marks the latest showcase for the artist known for vibrant paintings depicting a combination of whimsical figures among stylized natural settings.

Hyun currently lives and works in Seoul, Korea. But while attending the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. She developed her unique illustrative style and meticulous painting technique. In her works, Hyun draws inspiration from her memories, allowing her to utilize her experiences to create illustrious images. Her work is a medium for connecting her past and present, serving as a bridge between those old and new versions of herself.
Through Hyun's process, she explores her subconscious. By recalling those personal experiences and presenting them in her work, she comes to have a deeper understanding of herself.

Hyun’s paintings are populated with multiple figures that reflect her personality and evoke a sense of fantasy drawn
from a unique worldview that incorporates Korean artistic tradition with modern American flair. Enhancing that cultural remembrance, Hyun’s works are produced on hanji, incorporating into the very fabric of the paintings an ancient and proud cultural heritage that evokes the viewer to absorb an artistic heritage dating back millennia while often incorporating a repetitive, almost printmaking style evocative of late 50’s and early 60’s American counter-culture pop idols on top of a distinctly Korean iconography.

While Fairytale Dream will be her first exhibition at Gallery Ascend, her impassioned works have been enjoyed in galleries worldwide. The gallery is looking forward to presenting Hyun’s delicate yet rich stylized forms for their distinguished visitors soon.

Korean artist Ha Haeng-Eun's paintings are similar to a journal; she observes the world and then reflects it on canvas, yet it is not immediately apparent as she tempers each layer with love, hope, and freedom. The showcase is Narita's first in Hong Kong and will feature three series from his work. Using animated characters and toys as a basis for his visual language, Narita's worldview seems at first glance to be pop and charming. But upon closer examination, it becomes clear that his artworks are a distorted reflection of weirdness and death. Narita’s sculptures explore three-dimensional forms and the relationship between objects and space, with characters that inhabit an animated world devoid of depth.

Gallery Ascend is pleased to announce a solo presentation by British artist Millie Kelly.
Millie Kelly’s recent paintings explore the imagined and natural world through caricature, figuration and at times, abstraction. Her love for painting and the inherent experimentation involved in the process is clear to see in a melee of techniques; heavily applied paint, staining, layering, and the use of oil bars. These works celebrate the honesty of workings-out on the canvas, where elements have often been rubbed away or painted over, leaving behind evidence of the painting's creation.
‘Precious Cargo’ invites the viewer on the artist's personal journey as she embarks on motherhood. The 8 paintings on show at the gallery are visual emblems of her own psyche as she navigates the wonders of an ever changing pregnant body, emotions and as a result, her approach to painting. The birds in the paintings host a range of emotions, joy, humour and at times an essence of uneasiness or uncertainty, as the artist's vulnerabilities during this tumultuous time are reflected. As a result of these heightened emotions and experiences, Kelly believes this to be her truest and most honest body of work to date.

Yok Joaquin: Proof of Yok at Gallery Ascend

Yok Joaquin (Filipino, b. April 16, 1998) is known for his clean and simple style of painting. He also experiments with the possibilities of combining his aesthetics with architecture, fashion, and other mediums.
Yok's works transcend the simplicity in everyday life and situations. Based on his architectural background, Yok creates art with combining clean lines and simple figures in his unique style. Under his distinctive painting vocabulary that is different from the traditional art that we are used to such as the effusive sun and clouds, the dog-like fantasy creatures with human expression, as well as the naked women with pure body rhythm.
The viewer can assimilate into the artworks itself directly instead of getting lost in complex and resplendent art criticism. Behind the absurd vigor and childishness, there is a sense of unworldliness in Yok's artworks.

Satellite Village at Gallery Ascend

As a closing exhibition of 2021, Gallery Ascend would like to touch upon the history of our location: Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong.

Neolithic artifacts have been unearthed in a region called Chung Hom Wan, which is not far from Wong Chuk Hang. In 1550, the Hong Kong Village was established in Wong Chuk Hang; it still exists, much diminished in size, as Wong Chuk Hang Kau Wai. A satellite village, Wong Chuk Hang San Wai, was established in the 1860s and 1870s. A satellite village is a geographical term for one or more settlements that have arisen within the outskirts of a larger one. As a new gallery, Ascend is proud to be part of the active art establishments in the south side of Hong Kong, as a new wave just like a satellite village on the outskirt, we prompt to bring in a lot of interesting emerging artists as a refreshment to the scene.

For this group exhibition, we have included 18 different artists from China, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, United States, all of us connected even though we are far apart, just like satellites around the earth, and we all aspire to grow together as a new energy.

Noritoshi Mitsuuchi: Cutism at Gallery Ascend

There are many things that I find delightful in modern Manga, Western classical cartoons, Japanese cartoons, and ancient Asian arts including Choju-giga Minga and folk art. I have been inspired by many of them. I create art that stimulates the viewer’s memory and imagination by focusing on beauty that may be subtle, yet surely exists in the vast history of art.

In addition to the aforementioned… I find that the unfinished, comical, disposed and worn-out objects can be very appealing to me. My creations are inspired by personal experiences that have touched me deeply. I am influenced by multiple perspectives and proudly refer to them as Kawaiism (Cutism).

Jun Oson: DISTANCE in HK at Gallery Ascend

When I held a solo exhibition in Tokyo last November, the world was in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and people's actions were restricted by the declaration of a state of emergency in Japan. It was said that “Don't get close to people. It's better to stay home alone as much as possible”. Such rules have greatly changed people's lives and even changed their values. The Tokyo exhibition “DISTANCE” depicted people who have been forced to change their lives due to the pandemic.

About a year has passed since the "DISTANCE" exhibition, and I have decided to call this exhibition "DISTANCE in HK". I believe that we have overcome the toughest situation in Japan, and the circumstances have improved worldwide too. However, it is true that the impact we received from the pandemic made us realize the importance of a real-life community while the socialization on the Internet has developed, and the influence on our meaning of life will not disappear for the time being. Because of a new set of values that the pandemic left, we may not feel the same way as before, but we want to move on to the next step anyway.
