Stephen Thorpe: The Last Word Always Belongs to the Mountain at Ora-Ora

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Throughout history and across cultures, mountains have been regarded as places of power and mysticism, home to deities, ascetic sages, and creatures of myth. Depicted as thresholds between the mortal world and the divine, their rugged peaks form the border where human ambition meets the unknown. Thorpe’s new paintings explore our fractured relationship with these culturally significant landscapes, through contrasts of tone and texture, challenging our assumptions of what is marginal and what is teeming with life and meaning. In so doing, he inverts our expectations of the exterior and the interior; and invites a conscious examination of interiority.

In an ambitious statement show for the city’s art month, “UPWARD – Huang Yulong” brings more than 20 giant sculptures, measuring over 3m in height, to the harbourfront at the iconic Hong Kong Observation Wheel. Monumental in scale, facing upwards to the city’s skyline and a bright future, the spirit of which embraces openness, youth engagement, and a feeling of optimism and positivity for tomorrow. Since the early 2000s, Yulong's work has served as a powerful commentary on the evolution of street culture in China, and by incorporating familiar symbols like the hoodie, he invites a positive dialogue on belonging and the complexities of urban life. Furthermore, “UPWARD – Huang Yulong” features selected sculptures that combine elements of rugby, a deliberate nod to the Hong Kong Sevens which will also be taking place this March.

Presented in partnership with Great Entertainment Group (GEG) and the Hong Kong Observation Wheel & AIA Vitality Park, “UPWARD – Huang Yulong” takes the artist’s hip-hop, street culture style to new heights and never-before-seen scale. The show will occupy one of the most attractive outdoor exhibition spaces in the heart of Central, presenting unrivaled ‘Instagrammable’ opportunities for visitors. Ora-Ora is delighted to announce Peng Jian’s solo exhibition Generative Canvas. The exhibition will take place at Ora-Ora’s Tai Kwun space from 15 August - 26 September 2024. As a new series of works on canvas, it extends Peng Jian’s creative thread from observing daily life and objects, to observing daily actions.

In his new series Generative Canvas, Peng adapted software regeneration in his creative process. As selected photographs are repeatedly regenerated, the new images are used as a blueprint for his final artworks on canvas. This method excludes the factor of randomness, and instilled algorithmic processes in his creations.

Seen in Generative Canvas, Peng Jian mainly focuses on the “identity“ of the image over representation. He favours “what it is” over “what it looks like”, in which the method and concept changes how we evaluate the traditional dexterity of an artist. Instead, the combination of digital editing and human input celebrates exciting possibilities.

Opening reception: 15 August 2024 5:00 - 8:00 pm. The artist will be present.

Yi Yi Jeong-Eun: Alive, Alive, Oh! at Galerie Ora-Ora

Ora-Ora is pleased to present a solo show of new works by Korean artist Yi Yi Jeong-Eun, to take place in its Tai Kwun gallery in Hong Kong from 2 November to 10 December, 2023. The exhibition is titled: Alive, Alive, Oh! This is Yi Yi Jeong-Eun’s debut solo exhibition in Hong Kong, and first solo showing with Ora-Ora.

Speaking of Yi Yi Jeong-Eun’s new solo show, CEO and co-founder of Ora-Ora Dr. Henrietta Tsui-Leung said: “Yi Yi Jeong-eun gives painting a new dimension. She is mindfully seeing her world in a new and radical way, so that we begin to see our own world through her eyes. The horizon becomes full of freshness, colour and renewed optimism.”

Yi Yi Jeong-Eun’s artworks are imbued with the colourful energy of the scenery around her, and seek to radiate the joys, glories and transience of the natural world rather than seeking refuge in pure figurative description.

With words adopted from the Irish folk song Molly Malone, Alive, Alive, Oh! rings out with an embrace of being. As the artist expounds: “Nature is an object and location that allows me to most keenly sense the fact that I am one of the changing things… I realize that I too am alive when I watch clouds sail across the sky.” A celebration of the beauty of nature shines forth from her paintings, which are soaked in the hope-inspiring tones of summer, a stage of radiance under a horizon of sun and rainbows. Nature lies at the heart of the artist’s practice and in understanding her own artistic evolution. As she describes it: “While I am a human being, nature helps me realize that I am also a living animal.”

The artist will be presenting new works from his Heaven series, wall-mounted sculptures of industrial heft, and overwhelming, ethereal beauty. Each sculpture is titled with a colour. Yet each defies colour categorization, and is illuminated and guided by experience and instinct.

The artist derives inspiration from the Swedish concept of himmel and the Finnish equivalent taivas. Each word holds a dual meaning, referring both to the paradise of an eternal afterlife, as well as the atmosphere and skies above us. This series therefore incarnates a physical and a spiritual realm.

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a new solo show by Hong Kong-based artist Sophie Cheung at its Tai Kwun gallery space end of this month. The artist is also part of Ora-Ora’s line-up at Asia NOW in October 2023.

The title of the exhibition, “Erasing Time: Backwards and Forwards”, partly alludes to the words of Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard: “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” There is value, understanding and wisdom in looking back on where we came from, before resuming our path onwards and upwards. Ultimately, the exhibition is an affirmation of the power of art, not only for the viewer, but as an empowerment for the artist, who is able to forensically self-reflect, self-discover and bear witness in a public forum.

Semper Femina at Ora-Ora

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a group show of entirely female artists, comprising contributions from Peng Wei, Huang Dan, Zhang Yanzi and Nina Pryde. The title is “Semper Femina.”

Semper Femina  ̶  always, eternally a woman  ̶  explores issues that encapsulate the essence of womanhood, delving into the layered contours of femininity. It serves as a platform to amplify, celebrate and explore the unique qualities of women, unveiling a rich tapestry of experiences, emotions, and perspectives. The layered themes are rooted in the aesthetic of contemporary ink, spanning animation to collage and ink on paper.

The title is an abbreviated quotation from Book IV of “The Aeneid” by Roman epic poet Virgil (70 BC to 19BC). The full sentence, “Varium et mutabile semper femina” translates as “Woman is always a variable and changeable thing.” The exhibition ruminates not only on what it means to be female, but on the perceptions, judgments and limitations historically placed on women by wider society.

“Semper Femina” is a platform for female artists as individuals to bring their own voice, vision, and artistic language to the forefront, offering a multifaceted exploration of the feminine spirit. By gathering the distinctive weltanschauungen of leading female artists, we are reminded of the enduring strength, resilience, and transformative power of women throughout history and in our present times.

Buds that May at Ora-Ora

Buds that May at Ora-Ora

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a new group show focused on digital art, comprising contributions from three artists: Genesis Kai, Cindy Ng and Henry Chu. The title is “Buds that May.”

A group show dedicated to digital art is consistent with the gallery’s mission to explore the frontiers of possibility, both in philosophy and in technology. In that spirit, “Buds that May” marks Ora-Ora’s first collaboration with AI artist Genesis Kai. In 2021, Ora-Ora was the first gallery to present NFT artworks at Art Basel 2021. Cindy Ng was the artist who produced that work, and is also included in the line-up for this new show.

The title is an adaptation from Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18: “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day,” in which the lines: “rough winds do shake the darling buds of May” appear. The poem’s touching allusions to the transience of the seasons and long-lasting romantic memory begin a dialogue on what is real and what isn’t, what is permanent and what is temporary. These dichotomies and dilemmas form parallels in the digital landscape which offers a verisimilitude of reality, or perhaps an alternative world, part of, and no less real than ours. Furthermore, buds form a link to the flowers which appear in the “Red Prayer Series” of Genesis Kai, and in the oeuvre of Cindy Ng and Henry Chu.

Xiao Xu: The Resounding Chasm at Galerie Ora Ora

The title alludes to the idea of time as a fungible concept. The pandemic has intervened to slow, speed up or distort time within individual perception. Visualizing time as a river or landscape before him, the artist hears passions and emotions as echoes in its chasms. Employing humour and surrealist imagery to illustrate his realization, Xiao Xu calls to mind a line from Gong Zizhen, a poet of the Qing Dynasty: “Countless stars die, and the moon falls into the forest." The visit of the moon to earth becomes an illustration and metaphor for the suspension of normality and the artist’s embrace of the surreal and the pathetic fallacy.

Xiao Xu’s instantly recognizable signature style has won great acclaim from his peers and immense popularity with collectors. He works with ink on paper, employing an innovative layering method which creates a unique visual effect. By repeatedly adding ink colour to previously dry ink, he creates a rich texture-like depth. He is a maestro of darkness, forging a path of deep shadow, tipping the balance of chiaroscuro in favour of velvety midnight hues. Xiao Xu’s paintings harness the brush, ink and paper of classical times, pairing the past with a contemporary theatricality in his choice of subject, arrangement and inspiration.

Stephen Thorpe: Enter the Forest at the Darkest Point at Ora-Ora

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition by UK-born, US-based artist Stephen Thorpe titled Enter the Forest at the Darkest Point. The title of the exhibition is drawn from a quote by US mythologist and writer Joseph Campbell, who urges us to “enter the forest at the darkest point, where there is no path.” In so doing, we find what American poet, Robert Frost, termed the road “less travelled we learn to find our truest selves through a constant process of internal death and rebirth”. The show will open between November 24, 2022 and January 8, 2023 and present a new body of work created over the summer of 2022.

Having taught at the former Hong Kong campus of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) as a Professor of Painting for several years, Stephen Thorpe returns to the city with a new body of work solely featuring his acclaimed “corner” paintings, this will be the first time the artist presents this aspect of his practice in a holistic, immersive manner. Surrounded by richly-coloured walls and an enticing wall graphic motif designed exclusively by the artist, the corner paintings question the concept of our own interiority, our own psychic space.

In the words of Ora-Ora co-founder and CEO, Henrietta Tsui-Leung, “Stephen Thorpe’s interiors are epic journeys into our real selves. Enter the Forest at the Darkest Point raises the stakes even still further, enacting the primevaldrama of the forest.” Dr Tsui-Leung continued: “Stephen Thorpe is an exciting talent whose work is tremendously popular with our collectors. Although we have shown Stephen’s paintings twice this year, at Art Basel Hong Kong, and at KIAF in Seoul, we are delighted to be presenting him for the first time in our new Tai Kwun gallery.”

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce its first solo show by multi-disciplinary Hong Kong artist Sophie Cheung Hing Yee. The exhibition runs from August 24 to September 18, 2022.

Titled Erasing Time, Sophie Cheung investigates states of “in betweenness,” incarnating situations of permanent uncertainty, and breathing life into transience and ephemerality. In so doing, she dismantles seemingly inevitable, unmoveable forces of time and location, offering alternative perceptions of the world, and new possibilities.

A life-long advocate and activist for disability rights and mental health causes, Sophie Cheung’s practice undermines perceived boundaries and demarcations, empowering the inanimate or overlooked with properties of agency and self-determination.

In subtle allusion to the Chinese proverb of crossing the river by feeling the stones, she seeks pathways which navigate their way between past and present, between her home and other places she has lived, and between opposite viewpoints of history and current affairs. Her artworks are in a state of motion, not inhabiting either pole, merging time and place and forging new ways forward.

Huang Dan: When You Rise at Galerie Ora-Ora

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a thrilling new solo show by Beijing-based artist Huang Dan at its Tai Kwun gallery in Hong Kong. The show runs from June 29 to August 7, 2022.

Titled When You Rise, Huang Dan presents her new Gold Series for the first time in a gallery exhibition (some of the series were recently shown at Art Basel Hong Kong in May 2022). The series is made of gold leaf on canvas, which represents a new approach for an artist previously known for her ink on paper.

The title is a reference to 1969 Beatles’ classic “Golden Slumbers”, a paeon to the carefree days of childhood and the peaceful night of sleep that only a child may know. The lyric “When You Rise” alludes to waking for a new day. In paintings Tranquillity and Composure, the artist portrays that empty midpoint between calm inaction and active agency, which is analogous to the moment of waking. We all leave the world of infancy behind to challenge and navigate the world on our own terms, and “Golden Slumbers” is a title of optimism and of possibility, befitting a new day, and fresh evidence of Huang Dan’s quest to frame her philosophy in bold new ways.

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a thrilling two-part exhibition in its new Tai Kwun gallery, curated by Sovereign Art prize finalist Gary Mok Wai Hong and entitled Thesis/Antithesis

The exhibition showcases China’s most raw and exciting artistic talent, presenting new frontiers of artistic creation at their most vibrant and relevant. Formed of two parts which will run consecutively, the first part will present new work by two leading and widely admired Chinese artists, Chen Yingjie and Huang Yulong. Infusing the gallery space with the fizzing energy of a street scene, the vitality and potency of today’s urban counterculture will be given free rein. Both artists explore the raw colours of the streets, harnessing motifs and imagery from youth culture. The second part of the exhibition presents a group of artists from academia, together with the influences which have preceded them. In so doing, Ora-Ora asks whether artists must seek their learnings from patient education and knowledge of the past, or whether each generation must discover its muse afresh, drawing immediate inspiration from the contemporary world. This question poses a challenge to the gallery’s own mission statement of being “academically rigorous and philosophically minded.”

Ora-Ora is pleased to announce a new solo show by leading Chinese artist, Zhang Yanzi, entitled Where the Heart Is. The exhibition will open on August 5 at Ora-Ora’s new premises in renowned Hong Kong arts and heritage hub, Tai Kwun, in advance to our grand opening in September 2021.

Hong Kong gallery Ora-Ora presents a brand-new show by Chinese artist Zhang Yanzi, entitled Where the Heart Is. The artist was visiting her daughter in New York City when the pandemic struck, forcing her into several months of lockdown in the city. Having observed at first hand strife and dissonance, rising tensions, and chilling outbreaks of disunity and disharmony, the artist drew inspiration from modern civilization’s unprecedented stress test. Refusing to be disheartened, Zhang Yanzi uses these episodes as a catalyst for a wider incursion into the values we share and the hopes we hold dear.

In the Age of New Media, Why Still Paint?

In the Age of New Media, Why Still Paint?

In a tumultuous world, with social media driving instantaneous action and reaction to our screens, what remains for the paintbrush and canvas? Is there room for patient observation, interpretation and expression at a time like this? Our discussion addresses this existential threat, and asks whether lockdown has caused painting’s renaissance, allowing the world once again to slow down and to recognise the power of this more contemplative art form.

In the midst of Halley Cheng’s exhibition Kapok20 at Ora-Ora, three artists reflect on painting’s evolving role as a first response to the world around us. Is the functional ubiquity of technology in lockdown detrimental to new media, and conducive to a re-evaluation of the role of painting? Or has the world irrevocably changed, leading to an inevitable decline of the painterly tradition? What are the medium’s advantages and limitations? Join us on May 13 for a lively discussion on this theme with three leading Hong Kong artists: Halley Cheng, Kurt Chan and Hung Keung.

Kindly note that registration for the talk is required.
Please contact us at rsvp@ora-ora.com or call +852 2851 1171 with your full name and contact number to RSVP your attendance.

Halley Cheng: Kapok20 at Ora-Ora

Ora-Ora is delighted to present Kapok20, a solo exhibition by Halley Cheng. The exhibition opens on March 13 until April 17, 2021. The artist will be present at the opening reception as part of the celebration of Central West Hong Kong (CWHK) x Ferragamo.

Centred on Cheng’s new Kapok Series, the resonating dichotomy of kapok tree flowers takes form in an emblem of his emotional journey over the course of the past year to present day. Of deciduous nature, kapok flowers with their transient presence, appear after rainy periods, and with some luck, only a few would fully bloom, reaching their peak blossoming pinks and blood-reds. The red hue forms a symbolic thread across Cheng’s narratives – touching upon societal combat and strife that innately becomes a daily reminder of his experiences. Raw, lying splattered on the pavement, tread upon – such unidentifiable kapok forms incite the artist’s own introspection and nostalgia. A familiar icon to the people of Hong Kong, Cheng manipulates the subject to delineate personal reflection, collective experience, the pandemic, and the political underpinnings. With the diffusion of these trampled florets, it is a therapeutic revelation on Cheng’s part; one is encouraged to heuristically survey our world and our social relationships within it.

Liu Qi and Pan Wenxun: Winter Romance at Galerie Ora-Ora

Ora-Ora is pleased to present Winter Romance, a double exhibition by contemporary artists Liu Qi and Pan Wenxun. The exhibition, on view from 21 January to 6 March, kick starts the gallery’s programming for the New Year presenting positivity and passion with Romanticism.

The Romantic movement also known as the Romantic Style and Romanticism, is a literary period spanning roughly from 1790–1850 and characterized by a celebration of nature and the common man, a focus on individual experience, an idealization of women, and an embrace of isolation and melancholy. This period dominated Western literature and arts in the late 18th century, and highlighted the link between art and romance. In the East, Romanticism encompasses a broader sense of indulgence and poetic fantasy; in Eastern art, it is embodied through white space and poetry, whether with verse or strokes. Both Liu Qi and Pan Wenxun explore their idea of romance through ink paintings which depict their individual artistic methods and shared values of devotion and skill.
