Through the works of 18 artists, this exhibition traces the evolution of ink art from mid-20th century modernist experiments to present-day innovations. Walasse Ting: Joy, Temptation and Magic at Alisan Fine Arts

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Alisan Fine Arts is proud to announce the opening of Walasse Ting: Joy, Temptation and Magic, a survey exhibition of the artist’s evolution over five decades. While widely recognised for his exuberant and colourful paintings of Dionysiac nudes, luscious flowers and menagerie of animals. Walasse Ting (1928-2010) was a groundbreaking figure who bridged diverse Western movements – including CoBrA, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop art – with Chinese artistic traditions. This exhibition features representative works from each decade, spanning the 1950s to the 1990s, in mediums such as drawing, acrylic on canvas, and ink on paper, paying homage to his liberal meandering across Western and Eastern artistic influences, and unadulterated celebration of life’s abundance and temptations.

This comprehensive exhibition offers a vital exploration of the artist’s legacy, revealing facets of his oeuvre that have often been overshadowed by his well-recognised vibrant paintings of nudes and flowers. By showcasing early and lesser-known works—particularly in gestural abstraction and black-and-white painting—the exhibition reveals the depth and complexity of Ting’s creative spirit throughout his illustrious career. Ting’s long-standing relationship with Alisan Fine Arts dates back to his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong in 1986, organised by Alice King, the gallery’s co-founder, just five years into AFA’s operation. Since then, the gallery has mounted 12 solo exhibitions for the artist and has been instrumental in introducing Ting’s signature style to Asian audiences, helping to establish him as a significant figure in the Chinese art diaspora.

Alisan Fine Arts is pleased to present A Brush with Nature, our third solo exhibition for the award-winning landscape photographer Stephen King. Alisan Fine Arts is excited to present a solo exhibition by Wucius Wong, a celebrated figure in contemporary Chinese ink painting. Renowned for his analytical prowess, Wong adeptly transforms serene natural landscapes into striking geometric compositions. His artistic process involves a detailed deconstruction of conventional landscape motifs, unveiling the intricate geometric frameworks that lie hidden beneath their surface. This unique approach is deeply influenced by his emotive use of dots and lines, a technique that he learnt from his mentor, Lui Shou-Kwan. Enhanced by his early encounters with Western art and his achievements in the design realm, Wong's profound command of artistic techniques has enabled him to push the boundaries of traditional ink art. Through his work, he not only challenges artistic norms but also offers a glimpse into his inner psychological landscape and personal journey. This exhibition will showcase close to twenty paintings and examines Wong’s four different series of his work from 1985 – 2023 as highlighted below.

Wang Mengsha: Whispering Blossoms at Alisan Fine Arts

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Alisan Fine Arts is excited to present an exhibition of Wang Mengsha, an artist who gracefully navigates through the realms of traditional and contemporary art, where the ancient ‘xieyi’ style of painting is reborn through her innovative approach. She harmoniously blends aspects of traditional paintings of daily objects, court maidens and natural elements, all while employing a sense of humour and a vibrant palette that reminds viewers of the natural sceneries in the south-eastern part of China.

Wang’s paintings, often imbued with bold and striking colours, offers a visual feast that is both aesthetically pure and symbolically profound. Her use of a scatter-point perspective, a method from traditional Chinese painting, allows a stream-of-consciousness narrative to unfold across her works, providing a non-linear, fluid exploration of thoughts and emotions, as opposed to the logical and rigid perspective stressed by Western aesthetics. Exaggerating on this traditional method, as in her work, A Glimmer of Distant Fragrance, Wang creates a lying-on-one-side maiden, outsized butterflies or still objects, in order to invite us to step into a world where childhood dreams are not forgotten whispers but vivid realities that dance jovially on her creations.

Hung Keung: Digital Media Art Installation at Alisan Aberdeen

The exhibition will officially open to the public starting from November 4th, marking Alisan’s first solo exhibition for the artist. Hung Keung, a renowned digital media installation artist from Hong Kong and grantee of Asian Cultural Council Award (2005), is known for his interactive installations that combine film, video, and digital new media with themes from Chinese classical philosophy, art, and literature. This exhibition showcases Hung’s latest works from three of his iconic creation, including two groups with flowers and Chinese characters as the main themes – the multi-channel video “Four Seasons: Extended Time Series” and the vibrant digital moving images “Grain Rain Series”. The imagery depicts mist, flowers, charcoal, and rice paper transitioning from vibrancy to decay through ink variations. The dancing Chinese characters respond to these subtle changes, suggesting the relationship between the nature and the passage of time. V.1 of “Four Seasons” has been collected by Hong Kong Museum of Art.

Another significant artwork on display is the meditative digital video installation “Purifying and Integrating”. Hung Keung captures the image of a seated Buddha ink painting using a high-speed digital camera, intertwining it with shadows, light, and technology to create a unique sense of space and ambiguity. Still images gained the finalist of Sovereign Asian Art Prize, 2018.

Lin Guocheng: A Dance Of Landscapes And Civilisation at Alisan Fine Arts

Alisan Fine Arts is excited to start the fall season with a solo exhibition featuring the novel works of Lin Guocheng. This exhibition will showcase two distinct series from the artist––the “Landscape” series and the “Civilisation” series, each delving deep into the intricate relationship between nature and human civilization. Through his masterful integration of Western classical sketches with Chinese ink paintings, Lin Guocheng offers a fresh perspective on the ever-evolving dynamics of our world.

In Lin Guocheng's “Landscape Series”, the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible blur, giving rise to a harmonious blend of landscape, cityscape, and dreamscape. This trinity of realms offers viewers a multi-dimensional experience, where the serenity of nature, the dynamism of manmade structures, and the ethereal world of dreams converge in a rhizomatic interplay.

Central to the artist’s “Civilisation Series” is the question how human civilization would grapple with our own technological advancement. Lin overlays elements of human civilization against pixelated backdrops, creating a stark contrast between the digital and the analogue.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the French May Arts Festival, Alisan Fine Arts is honoured to announce its 9th solo exhibition for Gao Xingjian, the first Chinese writer awarded a Nobel Laureate. The French-Chinese author is also a renowned artist and playwright. This is Gao's first solo exhibition after being awarded the Commander of the Legion of Honour in January. Most of the works in this exhibition were created in the last two years and are focused on landscapes. However, Gao's landscape paintings are different from the typical landscape paintings we mostly see. Gao does not portray the reality and perspective of the scene but pursues the changes of light, shadow, and air with various shades of ink on the rice paper. Therefore, whether it is fog, the moonlight, or the wind, the vision appears misty or hazy. The works constitute Gao's inner world, echoing his award-winning novel Soul Mountain.

Fan Yan: Jeux Thèmes Variations at Alisan Fine Arts (Aberdeen)

Alisan Fine Arts is pleased to announce our first solo exhibition for contemporary female painter Fan Yan, featuring her new series Mist and Ostinato at Aberdeen Gallery, and the sponsorship of Fan's exhibition at Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. Her latest series, Mist, is inspired by the subtle changes of sea mist. Fan expresses the rhythm of water and moisture with repeated and precise folding patterns on rice paper. The pink and soft colour tones are filled with the vitality and beauty of nature.

Trained as a classical musician, Fan Yan was a viola player with Hong Kong Philharmonic, prior to devoting herself to painting in 2011. Using her music background, her works incorporate musical elements, such as her new B/W series Ostinato which is inspired by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012)'s Canto Ostinato. The works in the exhibition are like musical pieces presented visually, giving the audience a new way to experience music and art. In conjunction with the show, a live performance will be featured during the opening at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, including a flute solo by Megan Sterling where she performs the music of French composer Debussy's (1862-1918) Syrinx. A mini concert including string quartet by Philip Glass will also be held on 7 May at the Visual Arts Centre. Performance will start promptly at 3:30pm. Seating is first come first served.

Artist statement: "In Ten Holt's Canto Ostinato, he wrote a short melodic phrase performed on four pianos, where the canto repeats in a constant rhythmic pattern. The effect is to create a shifting foundation of a circulating 'obstinate' song. My technique of folding rice paper in dye to produce patterns that vary slightly in depth and intensity echoes the repetitive yet changing music patterns of the Canto Ostinato. The way I 'compose' painting is how I imagine a musician reading a music score. A visual score, so to speak, inviting audiences to visualise images, forms and patterns of sound vibrations, and inspire all."

Featuring 15 Chinese artists from Hong Kong, mainland China and the US of different generations and varying backgrounds, the exhibition seeks to highlight the changes in Chinese ink painting over the last half-century. They move beyond the tradition, adopting innovative materials and ways of creation yet maintaining the spiritual energy of ink or qi.

Landscape Reinterpreted
Landscape as a traditional subject of Chinese ink painting, its artistic essence has rarely been about realistic depiction, but spiritual resonance or the reflection of the state of mind and personality. Inheriting the core spirit of ink art and landscape, the artists further transformed ink landscape painting with new mediums, materials and composition, responding to their reality and imagination through Chinese landscape context of human feelings and literary culture. The section features Lin Guocheng’s three-dimensional surreal landscapes, Tai Xiangzhou’s Cosmoscape paintings, Wang Tiande’s landscape created with burn marks from incense sticks, Kelly Wang’s abstract landscapes that exist somewhere between two and three dimensions and combine contemporary and pre-modern materials, Yang Yongliang’s digital realistic Chinese landscape and Zhang Xiaoli’s boxed landscape inspired by a dicing game from the Song dynasty. By experimenting and creating landscape paintings based on different themes and through various mediums, these artists show a contemporary facet of this time-honoured subject.

Rediscovering Chao Chung-Hsiang at Alisan Fine Arts

Alisan Fine Arts is honoured to present its ninth solo exhibition for Chao Chung-Hsiang (1919-1991), a renowned Chinese diaspora artist with whom the gallery has been working with since 1985. Chao, like his contemporaries Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun and Wu Guanzhong, studied at National Institute of Art, Hangzhou (currently China Academy of Art) under Lin Fengmian and Pan Tianshou, two pivotal figures in the history of Chinese modern art. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Chao progressively earned international recognition in New York after he immigrated there. His works reflect the characteristics of various important schools of painting in America and Europe such as Abstract Expressionism, Cubism, Pop Art and Action Painting. Combined with his Chinese roots, he successfully introduced a unique style of Chinese art to the West and since then has held an important position in the 20th century art world. This exhibition traces the development of Chao’s work from classical Chinese paintings to powerful B/W abstract ink paintings and finally to the integration of the East & West to create his signature florescent paintings. Through these works, we hope that one can rediscover the great artistic value of Chao`s art.

Lui Shou-kwan: Hong Kong Landscapes at Alisan Fine Arts

Alisan Fine Arts is proud to present "Hong Kong Landscapes", its sixth solo exhibition for ink master Lui Shou-kwan. With a focus on Lui’s modern landscape paintings from the 1950’s and 60’s, the works on display literally follow Lui’s footsteps while he visits the various sites around Hong Kong Island. They include iconic landmarks such as Victoria Harbour, Victoria Peak, Lion Rock, Happy Valley, and the beautiful beaches of Repulse Bay and Shek O, as well as the various hills and valleys in the country parks. Through these works one can trace the extra-ordinary techniques that Lui developed to meticulously depict the changing seasons, weather, and the various times of day while maintaining the literati spirit of traditional ink painting. This exhibition is the third in a series of important shows the gallery has planned for its 40th Anniversary celebration this year.

Pop Rock at Alisan Fine Arts

Alisan Fine Arts is honoured to present a group exhibition POP ROCK that uses the scholar’s rock as a starting point to create a dialogue between high and low culture, past and present. Featuring 14 artists from Hong Kong and mainland China, the exhibition highlights the diverse explorations and perspectives of artists working in a range of different media—ink, photography, oil, sculpture, installation and video.

One of the challenges facing each generation of Chinese artists has been how to innovate and develop a personal idiom while remaining reverent to age-old artistic traditions. From the early twentieth century and increasingly in the last couple of decades, the desire to develop and incorporate Western aesthetics within Chinese art and culture has taken many different forms. This cultural hybridization has created much friction and misunderstanding of the formal, conceptual and spiritual dimensions of tradition. Curator: Olivia Wang & Jérémie Thircuir
Artists: Dong Wensheng, Han Lei, Hung Fai, Hung Keung, Koon Wai Bong, Ryan LaBar, Mao Guanshuai, Pan Yingguo, Shi Jinsong, Wai Pong-yu, Yau Wing Fung, Zhang Jian-Jun, Zhang Xiaoli & Zhang Ying
