Paste and Keep Text Only at Wure Area

This project connects three recent graduates — Connie Lau, Jennifer Lee, and Nesta Or —from different art schools through the WURE AREA AWARD. They approached the repetitive daily lives of others from the perspective of strangers, using media such as sound, video-editing, and collage to reorganize the familiar aspects of urban life. By fragmenting and reconnecting elements like frequent systems, disposable materials, markings, and traces of construction, they revisit the curiosity and imagination that have been lost in urban living.

The repeated behaviours we experience in our daily lives gradually form our habits and thought patterns, and these build in memories just like an established frame, hence we often ignore the changes and freshness around us.

Tiffany Law: sedimented sentiments at WURE AREA

The pictorial world slowly forms line by line; as a drawer, drawing is a process that allows me to comprehend my existence in the form-forming world.

She sees drawing with graphite as an analogy to such fragility embodied in the materiality of graphite itself. The materiality of graphite allows the drawing surface to be in constant flux, and each mark is erasable. By imagining the drawing surface as ground and each trace of a drawing as a stratigraphic layer, one can see that a drawing is an accumulation of marks, erasures, and fragmented temporalities. This process echoes the formation of rocks, where each grain results from thousands or even millions of years of erosion and sedimentation. Rocks form and transform into various states—seabeds, mountains, sand, and soil. Learning from rocks, She observes the cyclical relationships between the external environment and the inner geology of our bodies. Microchips, graphite ore, gypsum panels in architecture, bones resting on the seabed, flesh, and ash are not so disparate. Akin to rocks, they are all transformations and sedimentations of matter.

WURE AREA is delighted to invite you to visit the solo showcase of Fung Yee Lick “A Few Things About Calligraphy”《關於書法的二三事》.

Fung’s project explores the "aboutness" of Chinese calligraphy, using contemporary art methods to delve into the essence, purpose, meaning, and possibilities of calligraphy itself. Through three thematic aspects - emulation of ancient styles, form creation, and definition - the works are categorised, breaking away from the vertical context of traditional calligraphic history. It even attempts to detach calligraphy from its cultural background, exploring whether it has the capability to stand independently as an artistic medium.

Tracy Tsang: Call Me By Her Name at WURE AREA

We are delighted to invite you to visit the solo showcase of Tracy Tsang “Call Me By Her Name”《按她的名認識我》 at WURE AREA.

The solo visually depicts a poem about the passive and alienated experiences of a young girl. Drawing on her memories, she creates a scene exploring the girl's self-positioning as she grows up. While this process seems ordinary, it reveals the pressure of gender, sexuality, and religious roles, leaving her uncertain between the Self and the Other. Observing her growth, we sense the girl's contradictions and doubts during adolescence.

For this group exhibition ‘Those off-duty gazes’, Gallery EXIT collaborates with WURE AREA, as we review and reveal our mission, and explore possibilities for the future. This exhibition is curated by WURE AREA, showcasing in the exhibition space of Gallery EXIT the new works of ten young artists: CHAN Kam Lun, Mae CHAN, CHEUNG Tsz Ki, GO Hung, Jeremy IP, Rico LAU Ching Hei, LEE Chiu Sun, LEUNG Hoi Nga Livy, Giraffe LEUNG Lok Hei and WONG Winsome Dumalagan, with an original and experimental curatorial strategy that presents a different approach to a gallery/experimental space. The habit of observation that comes with one’s character/identity is absorbed into life, and the thoughts that precede the inspiration of art are embedded in the daily routine. Intelligence, grand and trivial, is always collected in the artist's pocket in their off-duty-time, and at some point it is interpreted as the motivation and rationale for their work.

Industrial buildings often remind us of garages or warehouses. It also breeds antique stores and hand-painted porcelain factories, which generate creativity and vitality.

The title Hidden Town was inspired by WURE AREA, an independent art space in the Kowloon Bay Industrial Area. Two photographers, Rabbit Ho and Hiuman Lam, walked around the area's industrial buildings and captured them from different angles.

Rabbit Ho's lens revealed the buildings' appearances, each adorned with cute bunny patterns, inviting viewers to discover the easily overlooked details. Hiuman Lam's focus, on the other hand, was on the diverse array of people and shops concealed within the industrial buildings, each with a unique story.

WURE AREA is delighted to invite you to visit the upcoming Project (original) 2nd exhibition.

Project (original) 2nd presents an interdisciplinary exhibition by 12 local young artists, compiling traces of their reminiscence of life lived. Some ingredients are pre-existing matter that have been ruminated, some are sediments after savouring the aftertaste, and some are virtual representations of collected materials. The diversity of this (original) temporary archive is brought forth by the varying percentages of these components, blending within a certain context of this era.

Perhaps the aftertaste can better reflect its components. In the remaining celebration of the original flavour, a voice simultaneously reminds us "Bon appetit!"

It's Stuffy Here at Wure Area

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)

Stuff accumulates into a pond. Its surface lays still, and within it shapes and sizes filled. Each object amassed through life's daily mundaneness, some packaged, some exposed. Each assimilates into a large lump of sentimental sediment through never-ending submersion in the pool — slowly dissolving, dispersing, propagating and mumbling— enveloping all space in its endless expansion.

Fluids refuse to solidify, as solids once and again liquify. Everything dissolves into an unsalvageable mix of wetness and dryness.

The artistic team collected items from a stockpile cluttered at a home with the owner’s consent to cast their creative responses into forms. This exhibition investigates the time and space within the accumulated space. As tangible objects sink into intangible emotion and memories, we revisit the concept of “accumulation” as the result, the process and the experience — how an individual projects their facade and their interior. We journey through the possibility and difficulty of tidying oneself up. A plausible familiarity ripples through the surface as we gaze into the pond.

Relay Relay Relay Relay! at WURE AREA

Relay Relay Relay Relay! at WURE AREA

Wure Area is delighted to invite you to visit the exhibition《認真接力派對》“Relay Relay Relay Relay!“. The joint exhibition presents the serial works by four local artists, Au Wing Chau, Lau Hong Lam, Ngai Wing Lam, and Glary Wu.

Let’s see what happened to the bizarre relay party. Even though the tracks are in place, there are no rules but freedom to pass on for the next section. Unlike team working and balancing for a fair and common goal, all players achieved their own chapter. If a stick is being delivered, handle it smoothly like the racket, folding stool, water bottle, or cat charmer; if you are dealing with a script, translate and recreate it in rock, opera, manga, or clay animation. Ending is no longer the only goal, each frame contains the possibility of opening, continuing, turning, and concluding. Left hand to right hand, sequential narration and flashback, lost in the moment, let the relay become the beginning of the party.

Four local artists, Au Wing Chau, Lau Hong Lam, Ngai Wing Lam, and Glary Wu, who have each created their own world views, have formed an alliance of serial images in a non-discussion arrangement. In the art space, they re-explored the previous skill or experimental creative system, and shared their characters and world to form eight groups of works. Au Wing Chau’s creatures are always with an unknown expression, and the vibe is extended to the scene and color. There are concise symbols in Lau Hong Lam's pictures, which are both directional and mysterious. Ngai Wing Lam explored diverse platforms to build up the atmosphere with the cinematographic angle. Glary Wu used the context of the material and the picture processing to expand the fluidity of the narrative.

Even if the storyline runs off the track, it can also generate a variety of pedestrian paths. Let’s take an adventure of striding across the wrong map and connecting to unexpected routes.

Opening on 3/2/2023 (Fri) 6-9 PM

Gallery address: Flat 707, 7/F, Block B, Po Lung Centre, 11 Wang Chiu Road, Kowloon Bay

The initial idea of the exhibition Without a Trace is to question any immortal evidence that can prove the existence of oneself.

Everything we do leaves traces, doesn’t it?

A tiny mark, an object, or a sign.

What is the most faithful evidence we leave behind, to prove that we have existed?

When everything returns to dust, it’s all that’s left.

In fullness of silence,

Without a trace.

We are delighted to invite you to visit the exhibition 靈 — 象| 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑 at WURE AREA. It is a joint exhibition presenting the culmination of works by six local artists over the past year. They are Albert Tsoi, Benny Lau, Bowie Tsang, Tommy Chan, Manet Tam, White Cheng.

The idea of having the show 靈 — 象| 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑 was initiated with a desire of human intimacy through exploring the duality between essence and representation.

Others and I, pain and pleasure, emptiness and being, representation and things-in-itself (Will), and unconsciousness and intentionality, the world seems to us in a state of opposites and conflicts, each existing on the other side.

I cannot truly know others, and I cannot know the essence of the world, just as we never see the sun when we only see the sunlight. 靈(Ling) is me, as well as the essence; 象(Zoeng) is the representation, as well as the illusion, They are in essence two sides in the same coin.
