The Stallery At 10 — A Retrospective at The Stallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This year, The Stallery marks a milestone—10 years of exhibitions and fostering community within the contemporary art scene in Hong Kong.

Since its founding in December 2014, The Stallery has been more than just a gallery; it has been a space for artistic dialogue, experimentation, and evolution in the context of Hong Kong’s dynamic society and most importantly, a sanctuary for artists. To celebrate a decade of having been in the same, grungy location in Wanchai, this special decennial anniversary exhibition will reflect on the journey of both the gallery and its founder Ernest Chang.

The exhibition will be a comprehensive look at the development of Chang’s work as an artist, showcasing key works created at and exhibited at The Stallery over the past ten years; alongside this, a curated selection of featured artworks from past exhibitions will highlight artists who have contributed to the gallery’s vibrant, diverse and local history— with Angela Ho, Bao Ho, BOMS, Chak, Frog King(蛙王), Siukins, Siuman Lo, Plumber King (渠王), Rachel Smith and Isaac Spellman joining the celebrating.

Opening reception: 22 February, 6-9pm

Inner & Outer: WoA 2025 at The Stallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Stallery proudly presents “Inner & Outer: WoA 2025”, a group show featuring 18 Hong Kong artists from different backgrounds and their practices. WoA (Works of Art) is an artist collective founded in 2019 by abstract painter Chak with the hope of ploughing an open field for conversation to happen between artists and giving them deserved exposure. First joined by fellow artists such as Simone Boon, Ernest Chang, and IV Chan, the group quickly expanded to its current size of around 50 members. Thanks to its loose structure and self-initiating nature, WoA inherits the mobility of artist-run events signified by the many open studios in Hong Kong. Members’ wish to maintain professional exchange and public exposure sprawl outside their original location, creating networks across Hong Kong and beyond.

Fast forward to 2025, the collective is presenting its fourth group show at The Stallery with a total of 19 artists. They showcase artworks that reflect on the theme of interior and exterior – the dual nature of WoA that symbolizes introspection and exchange. Some artists from the group have delved into the natural landscape and cityscape to contemplate the source of inspiration. Other artists choose to explore the realm of personal headspace with some of them even bridging boundaries between the public and the personal.

Opening reception: Saturday, 11 Jan, 2025, from 6pm

Gallery address: G/F 82A Stone Nullah Lane, Wan Chai

Chak & Erika Shiba: Echoes The Stallery

How does painting reflect part of our life? Painting is a habit, a pursuit, and a way of intellectual training. More often, artworks record and preserve our feelings and thoughts about the surroundings, even acting as a mirror reflecting the truth of the artists.

Living in the speedy pace of hustle city life, we need to have conversations to tidy up our minds, lift our boundaries to achieve our internal peace. What are mindful freedom and internal spirituality? Through visual art created by our artists, CHAK (the oil paint artist) and SHIBA (the copper printmaker), could they show any intertwined possibility between the two?

Faces Places at The Stallery

The show features two Hong Kong native artists, Pater Ho and Rorce Lau, who share interesting perspectives of people and places through their lenses. The two artists speak their own unique photographic languages with one thing in common – individuals among us telling stories about the world they perceived.

Photography is a playground. Pater amuses himself with the union and reconstruction of images he took in Hong Kong and Japan to create endless possibilities that are immortal and unbounded outcomes of emotions and states of mind. With use of a special artistic operation he punches holes or adds colour dots to his works to explore the divine connection instinctively between people and places, and also among peoples themselves.

Rorce champions the originality of photography with his self-made camera obscura. He develops his aesthetic works from simple and raw images captured through this oldest optical device combined with the newest technology, the Artificial Intelligence. In the show, he welcomes visitors to experience the world through the camera obscura way, an inverted reality which, to him, is a reflection of human life – a journey of both fun and perplexity.

SIUKINS: Born From Thoughts at The Stallery

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The artworks in the exhibition “Born From Thoughts” are not only independent pieces but also interconnected, forming a narrative that reflects SIUKINS’ personal experiences, emotions, and thought processes while skillfully conveying a profound sense of alienation.

SIUKINS’ painting style is deeply inspired by Japanese manga culture, with recurring characters and thought bubbles that evoke elements of Japanese superflat art. This allows audience members of different age groups to resonate with the art while leaving infinite room for their imagination. Although these works may appear simple, upon closer observation, viewers can discover how the artist ingeniously reconstructs his carefully crafted worldview, and, in the process, infuse it with new vitality. The juxtaposition of familiarity and reconstruction creates a unique visual language that invites viewers to contemplate the power and essence of thought, as well as the transformative potential of art. Through this series of new works, SIUKINS encourages the audience to explore their inner worlds and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

This exhibition is an opportunity not to be missed. The Stallery WCH sincerely invites all art lovers and the curious to explore this captivating exhibition and witness first-hand SIUKINS’ unique artistic expression. Together, we will discover the beauty that emerges at the intersection of abstract thought and tangible creation.

These glasses will be permanently available for public use at The Stallery through the EnChroma Color Accessibility Program starting with the upcoming group exhibition (WOA ’23) from September 27 to October 22, 2023. Furthermore, an exciting exhibition featuring artwork exclusively by color-blind artists is planned for January 2024, marking another significant step in improving color accessibility.

WOA ‘23, which stands for Works of Art 2023, is an annually held group exhibition between a collective of prominent Hong Kong-based artists at The Stallery. This year, the exhibition will feature new and old members, again spanning a range of mediums and themes from abstract acrylics to AI-generated images and conceptual sculptures.

Colour-reveil experience with EnChroma at The Stallery

The Stallery is excited to announce that colour blind visitors are now able to borrow special EnChroma glasses for colour blindness during their visits to all upcoming exhibitions at the pop and street art gallery. Partnering with EnChroma to improve the gallery experience for colour blind visitors, The Stallery is the first gallery in Hong Kong to offer EnChroma colour blind glasses to enable accessibility to the arts of the people of Hong Kong! While people with normal color vision see over one million shades and hues, those with color vision deficiency only see up to 10% of colors. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are color blind: 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%), roughly 319,000 in Hong Kong alone.

On Tuesday, September 12 at 7pm, colour blind individuals including Ernest Chang, artist and founder of The Stallery, a local artist, and a public participant, will try on the EnChroma glasses for the first time while viewing Chang’s recently closed solo exhibition “Space Rich” for an emotional live reveal as they experience the colors of art. Their reactions and experiences will be captured on video and shared with the press and on The Stallery’s social media platforms post-event.

Ernest Chang: Space Rich at The Stallery WCH

Ernest Chang: Space Rich at The Stallery WCH

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Stallery WCH is proud to present Space Rich, a solo exhibition by Ernest Chang featuring a brand-new collection of 14 works of silkscreen on Perspex and 4 sculptures, the latter of which are extension of previous artworks. The exhibition will be on view from 16 March to 4 June 2023.

In the same vein as 2021’s Bling Dynasty, which explored contemporary (pre-pandemic) global consumerism by bringing together Chinese and Western culture and artistic styles in provocative visual hybrids, Space Rich will again entice viewers by its incorporation of recognizable figures and icons from pop culture and luxury brands in its compositions. Apart from The Happy Donor, which was commissioned by McCafé Hong Kong as part of the well-received group exhibition SubXture at the K11 Art Mall earlier in 2022, all works featured in Space Rich are created in 2021-2023 and have not been exhibited before.

This time, “earthly” icons are juxtaposed against the barren landscape of Mars, in a sort of visual contemplation of what deep space habitation would look like, and whether an “escape” from reality — into outer space or to virtual reality — is truly possible for those of us inhabiting a world dominated by consumerist urges and social media feeds. The Stallery invites viewers on a foray into Chang’s imaginative visions of Mars and its futuristic inhabitants’ footprint on it, which, as always in his practice, are at once provocative and playfully enticing.

“In recent years, the effects of extreme wealth seem to catapult the mega-rich into outer space one after another in the name of space exploration. Is this the ultimate metaphor of how physically and mentally detached the ultra-wealthy are from the lives and realities of the majority of this planet? Are we truly exploring this new frontier, or are we actually exploiting this new frontier and condemning other worlds to our problems here on earth?”

Post No Bill presents Boms’ works from different stages of his artistic oeuvre including his iconic characters, photography of his street art and graffiti, contemporary Chinese calligraphy and the local hip-hop scene.

Boms (b. 1990) is a graffiti artist working in Hong Kong. Starting out in his early practice with acrylic on canvas, Boms strayed away from the traditional medium after discovering street dancing and hip-hop at the age of 17. It was through the local hip-hop scene that he was exposed to graffiti art for the first time, and its down-to-earth power in capturing city dwellers’ attention with bursts of creativity soon also captured his artistic imagination. He started to devote himself to spray-painting murals and is now one of Hong Kong’s most recognizable street artists.
