Sotheby’s Hong Kong is pleased to present British+Iranian+American artist, Kour Pour’s solo exhibition, Ten Thousand Things & One Suchness. In this highly-anticipated return to Hong Kong the artist presents 12 new large-scale paintings which draw inspiration from a myriad of sources ranging from Persian miniatures, Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Western abstract painting, Chinese landscape and export paintings, Buddhist sculpture and thangka painting. Pour’s new paintings are exhibited alongside a selection of antiques and treasured objects from across Asia recreating the environment of a bazaar along the Silk Road.

In this new series of paintings Kour Pour presents the viewer with canvases that come alive with painted figures and objects from across time and geographies, brought together with an irreverent humour underlined by his titles such as Namaste (From India to LA), Guardians of the Galaxy and Citipati Party. The ’Suchness’ of the exhibition title refer to the Buddhist term ‘suchness’ or ‘Tathātā’ meaning the essential nature of reality, or the truth of all things. The traditional bordered format of Tibetan thangka paintings merges with the borders of Persian miniature paintings as well as the borders of carpets from cultures across the world.

Liu Guofu: Requiem at Sotheby's

Announcing the upcoming launch of Liu Guofu's special selling exhibition: Requiem at Sotheby's Hong Kong Gallery. Organised by Sotheby's, this exhibition is part of the celebration of Sotheby's 50 Years in Asia showcasing a curated collection of the artist’s iconic series including some latest works. The exhibition debuts from 24 August to 8 September 2023.

Liu Guofu was born in 1964 in Nanjing, and graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Nanjing Institute of Arts in 1985. He currently lives and works in Nanjing.

His artwork melds motions of light with air. While “light” brings out its depth, “air” helps disperse the “light” to every corner of the work. His symbolic blue-greyish colour is fundamental to his works. Up close, the brushstrokes are chaotic and fragmented, yet from a distance the brushstrokes gather to form a poetic tranquillity.

Liu Guofu has held various major solo exhibitions in Shanghai Art Museum (Shanghai, Today Art Museum (Beijing) and Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum (Nanjing). His paintings are widely collected by private and institutional collectors internationally, from MGM Chairman’s Collection in Macau, Shanghai Art Museum to Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum in Nanjing, and major private collections from U.K, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland, Dubai, India, U.S., Canada, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China.

Je Yeoran: When the Yellow Hits My Eye at Sotheby's

  • Hong Kong Hong Kong (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Sotheby’s Hong Kong is pleased to present Korean artist, Je Yeoran’s first exhibition in Hong Kong. Curated by Jang-Uk Lee, Chief Curator at Space K, Seoul, the solo exhibition titled When the yellow hits my eye will showcase over 20 abstract paintings produced between 1997 to 2023, ranging from Je’s signature Usquam Nusquam series, to rare examples of her earlier Becoming and Becoming series.

Je’s journey in abstraction began in the 1980s during a period where pioneering abstract Asian artists such as Park Seobo, Lee Ufan and Kazuo Shiraga were working. She is one of the few female abstract painters of her generation from Korea. Je’s sole use of the squeegee as a tool as opposed to a traditional paint brush, makes works iconic. As she tames the flat rubber blade, it becomes as extension of her body, and each work becomes a performative accumulation of bodily gestures, driven by her internal impulses.

Meguru Yamaguchi: In My Element at Sotheby's

This September, Sotheby’s is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of the New York-based Japanese artist Meguru Yamaguchi in Hong Kong. Titled ‘Meguru Yamaguchi: In My Element’, the selling exhibition opens from 7 - 19 September 2022 and will showcase 15 never-before-seen artworks from the Yamaguchi’s celebrated series including Möbius, Out of Bounds, Shadow Piece, Revisualize and Untitled series which blend elements of street culture, music, art and Japanese aesthetic sensibilities.

Inspired by Robert Glasper’s albums In My Element and Black Radio II, Yamaguchi’s artwork series takes reference from how various music genres integrates and transitions into new forms of music – an inspiration that he sees as a connection to his art which intertwines with street culture. Encompassing his intrinsic brushstroke style, Yamaguchi pushes the boundaries of painting and gestural abstraction in order to create new sculptural forms. Presenting a full spectrum of the artist’s most iconic series, the exhibition is set to introduce Yamaguchi to a wider audience in Asia.

Speaking about the exhibition, Meguru Yamaguchi expresses, “In My Element’ highlights my creative journey that stretches beyond a canvas frame, merging street culture with art. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to curate an exhibition that truly represents myself, with a mélange of all my styles and influences, and share my new works with Sotheby’s and the Hong Kong audience.”

André Brasilier: Grande Fantasia at Sotheby's

This summer, Sotheby’s is delighted to present André Brasilier: Grande Fantasia, a selling exhibition featuring a spectacular and thorough array of 21 compositions by the French modern master André Brasilier from every chapter of his momentous career. Showcasing fresh-to-market works dating from 1959 to 2019, this in-depth exposition traces the development of an artist whose works exemplify the culmination of Fauvism, Expressionism, Impressionism, and Symbolism. The exhibition will take place at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery from 20 August to 1 September 2022.

With his vibrant palette and fluid brushstrokes, Brasilier’s works depict scenes of reality immersed with feeling, emphasising the peaceful coexistence of man and nature. After setting a new auction record for André Brasilier in Hong Kong earlier in April, Sotheby’s is thrilled to bring along this highly curated selling exhibition to meet the surging demand among our Asian collectors.

The selling exhibition in Hong Kong will focus on two major themes that are consistently highlighted among the artist’s body of works: horses and his wife and muse - Chantal. An ode to horses, nature, music and the female form, the selection celebrates Brasilier’s aesthetic sensitivity, his unwaveringly optimistic perspective of life and his pursuit of unadulterated joy.

The Macklowe Collection at Sotheby's

On 9 September, at a global livestream event, Sotheby’s revealed details of the forthcoming landmark sales of The Macklowe Collection – one of the most important collections of any collecting category ever to appear on the market. Each of the 65 works is a consummate masterpiece; together they constitute an unrivaled ensemble that meticulously traces the most important art historical achievements of the last 80 years. Acquired over the course of half a century, the collection reflects decades of pursuit, honing and refining, driven by immense patience and an innate understanding of quality. Estimated to realize in excess of $600 million – the highest estimate ever placed on any collection to come to auction  The Macklowe Collection will be offered across two dedicated evening single owner sales at Sotheby’s in New York, on November 15 this year and in May 2022.

The first of the two sales will feature 34 works which together encompass an extraordinary breadth of 20th- and 21st-century art, ranging in date from the 1940s to works painted less than a decade ago, and including masterworks by Alberto Giacometti, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol.
